Ape was a member of the Morlocks who was amongst those that escaped the Marauders' slaughter during the "Mutant Massacre".

Ape was later captured by the subversive Weapon X program and incarcerated in the "Neverland" concentration camp, where he was amongst the first mutants to be executed.

Ape was able to change shape into that of any solid object he could imagine. Due to his limited intelligence, the objects he could transform into were often simple ones.

Note that Ape III should not be confused with Ape I (Human Torch foe) or Ape II (Rawhide Kid villain).

Actually Monolith makes a good point. Mutant Massacre ends in Uncanny 213 and if you argue the X-Factor part it ended in X-Factor # 11. Also little fact the X-factor saved Ape and Tarbaby in X-factor may help.

That's why I think having the bios as actual threads on the message board is a great way of presenting them, because fans can then contribute directly (by posting) rather than indirectly (by e-mail or other means).
