X-Fan Correspondent Benjamin Ong Pang Kean gets transported to the future of the Marvel Universe as co-creator and writer of the Earth X trilogy Jim Krueger reveals some secrets, provides a sample script from the upcoming Devils: A Paradise X Special, as well as discussing his upcoming projects.

X-FAN: For the benefit of those who have not read your books, what is the Earth X trilogy about?

JIM KRUEGER: The X trilogy is about secrets. It's about explaining all the things that weren't explained in the past of the Marvel Universe. What do the Watchers watch for? Why is there a Galactus? Why are there alternate realities? What is vibranium? etc, while all the time creating a story that features every hero and villain in the Marvel Universe that ever lived and died.

Really, it is the Marvel Universe itself that is the main character, although Captain America, Reed Richards and Machine Man (X-51) are probably the big three of the series.

X-FAN: How does the Devils one-shot tie-in to the entire Earth X trilogy? What revelations are we to expect from this one-shot? And will the events in this particular book affect the rest of the series?

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001001_400_proof.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001001_400_prooft.jpg" align=right alt="Devils: A Paradise X Special Page 1 preview"></a>KRUEGER: Devils ties in to the others in a number of ways. It touches upon one of the storylines going on in the series, that being one inspired by one of the oldest stories in all of British literature, the Chaucer inspired tale of what happens when there is no longer a death capable of taking the lives of those he comes upon.

Death was killed at the end of Universe X, and as a result, people who should have died will now suffer forevermore.... unless a new Death can be created. And so, this is the story of that creation at the hands of Earth's greatest heroes.

The title Devils, based on the cover, might be thought to be referring to the Daredevils, but is also relates to the heroes, who themselves know that their actions will be considered by some to be criminal. The special also explores more of Mar-Vell's past in the Realm Of The Dead.

X-FAN: What's it like working with Devils artist Steve Sadowski? Are there plans for future projects with him?

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001002_400_proof.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001002_400_prooft.jpg" align=right alt="Devils: A Paradise X Special Pages 2-3 preview"></a>KRUEGER: I love Steve's work and would love to work with him again. I'd take any opportunity given.

X-FAN: When is Devils due to arrive in stores?

KRUEGER: Wednesday, 9 October 2002.

X-FAN: With Paradise X almost complete, a popular question from fans and readers is whether the trilogy is the future of the real Marvel Universe or just another alternate timeline story? Having spoken of plans to do more Earth X stories, such as History X and X-Tales, why bother if the trilogy does not affect the future direction of the MU in any way? If this is the actual future of the MU, do you think this would limit the creativity of Marvel creators in that all events from now onwards would ultimately lead to Earth X?

KRUEGER: I don't want to give too much away, but part of the desire for this final part of the series was to deal with answering the question ourselves as to if this is the true future or not, as well as finding a way to justify each and every alternate reality that exists.

I would like to point out though that if the current Marvel Universe is called Earth 616, then it is not the real version either. These issues are ones we are dealing with in this series.

X-FAN: What other projects are you currently working on?

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/clockmaker_cover1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/clockmaker_cover1t.jpg" align=right alt="Clockmaker #1 preview"></a>KRUEGER: Clockmaker is out in January from Image. The art is by Matt Smith and Brett Weldele (who was voted by Wizard as one of the top 5 upcoming artists in comics). This is about a giant clock within the a hollowed mountain in the Swiss Alps that is actually the gateway to Heaven. And of the battle that is fought at that gateway.

A few months later, Yesterday People, also by Image, will be released. The art is by Steve Yeowell. It's about a group of people that are falling backwards through time. It's Highlander in reverse, I guess. But very different than that at the same time.

I'm in the midst of a Micronauts limited series right now that tells the origins of Baron Karza... and it will actually even have a tie-in with the original Marvel continuity in a way that I think will please long-time fans.

Foot Soldiers Volume 3 is released from AIT-PlanetLAR this week as well, and this is the first all-new material in about two years. Foot Soldiers is the adventure of three kids that go to the graveyard where the superheroes are buried and rob the graves. They try to fill the literal, actual shoes of the legends themselves. And of course, everything goes wrong from there.

And then, of course, Alex and I are always talking about what we'll do next...

Krueger has provided X-Fan with the first three pages of script from the issue, whilst editor Mike Marts provided the first five pages of art from the one-shot.

PG 1 OVERVIEW: This is a teaser page for the spread on PGS 2-3. The scene here is the classic scene of a man (the EARTH X DAREDEVIL in this case) being bound to a spinning wheel and of the knife-thrower (here, though, yet another DAREDEVIL) who attempts to throw knives without striking the body. The exception though, in this case, is that the idea is to hit the body with each throw. Daredevil can't be killed. Ironically, though, no one can die now on the world of Paradise X.

1/1 Opens with the DAREDEVILS stunt show. All we see is the stage. In the foreground in a Daredevil, with throwing knives in hand, he stands poised to throw these knives at another Daredevil in the background, who is bound at the ankles and wrists by iron shackles. The wheel is spinning him around. No knives have been thrown at him yet.

DD1 should have something like 8 knives in his hands. He looks over his shoulder to an implied audience (the reader).

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001004_400_proof.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001004_400_prooft.jpg" align=right alt="Devils: A Paradise X Special Page 4 preview"></a>DAREDEVIL 1 (KNIFE THROWER): I suppose now would be a good time to mention that I've never done this before.

1/2 The other Daredevil, the one, who now hangs upside down, with a knife about to fly into him.

DAREDEVIL 2 (THE TARGET): They're not even laughing, DD. They know you're not going to miss.

1/3 Daredevil 2's head is now down, as if he's dead. The knife is now stuck in his chest.

DAREDEVIL 1 (KNIFE THROWER) (VOICE COMING FROM OFF PANEL): Oh yeah?

1/4 DAREDEVIL 1, now throwing three knives right at the reader. The knives are all coming right at us (although it should be implied that he's throwing them at the other DAREDEVIL)

DAREDEVIL 1: And as if that were not enough, laideeeez and gentlemen...

1/5 Bust shot of Daredevil 2(the victim). Now his head is at 10:00 on the spinning circle. We can now see four of the throwing knives sticking out of DD2's chest

DAREDEVIL 1 (OFF PANEL, THE KNIFE THROWER): ... this is a good time to thank my able and willing and oh so naďve assistant.

1/6 Similar shot to 1/5, but now DD2 is at 2 O-Clock with three more knives in his chest. Except now, of course, his head isn't drooping, he's very much alive.

DAREDEVIL 2 (THE VICTIM): Look, this isn't working for me.

1/7 Pull out to show Daredevil at 6:00, with all 8 knives in him. He looks like the hanging man of a tarot card set.

DAREDEVIL: Death and dismemberment just isn't popular anymore.

2/1-3/1 2/3 of the DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD.

OPENING NOTE: THERE ARE 30 DAREDEVILS ALL TOGETHER. WHEN MEPHISTO TAKES THE FORM OF ONE, THAT TAKES THE NUMBER TO 31.

NOTE TO STEVE: Alex actually suggested showing this more like a circus poster on the side of a building than of an actual scene. I'd have the poster pulled between two posts with wrinkles in the fabric and all of that.

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001005_400_proof.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/PXDVLS001005_400_prooft.jpg" align=right alt="Devils: A Paradise X Special Page 5 preview"></a>The Poster art should be a little more like classic circus art, but the images of the Daredevils being killed all over it should surround the CIRCUS LOGO:

NOTE: This poster should be pulled over a sign that we can still make out Latverian Coliseum

All the Daredevils in action, doing everything they can to kill themselves.

The blindfolded one has ten knives sticking out of him.

There are three that are beheaded and one of them is juggling the heads.

Another is in flames and riding a unicycle over a number of spikes.

Yet another is on the motorcycle while another is shooting him with a machine gun...

NAME:

DAREDEVILS' PANEMONIUM AND MADHOUSE

TAGS:

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A DEATH TO BRING THE FAMILY TOGETHER

MASSACHISM FOR THE MASSES!

WE DON'T DEFY DEATH, WE EMBRACE IT

YOU WILL BELIEVE A MAN CAN DIE

There's also a banner on the poster that now reads "TO LIVE AND DIE AND DIE AND DIE IN LATVERIA!"

2/2-3/2 Over the shoulder shot of the Daredevils taking a bow. One is putting his head on (it's still a few inches above his neck.

It's not until the end of these acts that we see that there aren't that many in his audience. A few clumps of people here and there. Ben Grimm and the Brothers Grimm amongst most of the empty seats.

It's like seeing maybe a hundred people show up for a major league baseball game. And none of them sit together.

We do see that the kids love DDS.

DAREDEVIL #2: This is embarrassing. We outnumber our fans.

Being a fan of darker art- I gotta say I am totally digging these previews. I've never actually picked up a copy of Paradise X- although I've watched the trailer for the series a couple of times at the marvel site. (aren't those trailers great?!?!) But now I'm more then considering picking up this copy? The only prob though is will I be totally lost having not read them until now??

no you shouldn't be completely lost Jim usually keeps the specials contained. Plus you really should pick up the whole series it is pretty dark as a whole.

There is several Trades found at X-World
Universe x 1 and 2
Earth X trade

just to let ya know Roguechere.

And this looks really interesting. I've been meaning to get hte trades, but this special was intruiging me for awhile. Its cool that its taken some influence from Chaucer.

But, thanks Adam Warlock, I didnae know that these One-shots were more contained rather than not. So, if I can, I'mn picking it up.

For those who're interested, Steve Sadowski's involved in Geoff Johns and David Goyer's JSA: All Stars, an eight issue miniseries that will kick off around May. The first and the last part is drawn by former Black Panther art team Sal Velluto and Bob Almond. Issues #2 through #7 are standalones and each issue spotlights a single character, except for the first and last issue which features the whole team. Steve draws the Dr. Midnight story in issue #7. Here's a list of the creators involved in each issue:

#1 – JSA: Geoff Johns/David Goyer (w), Sal Velluto/Bob Almond (p/i)
#2 – Mr. Terrific: Johns/Goyer, Dave Ross; Michael Chabon, Michael Lark
#3 – Dr. Fate: Johns/Goyer, Barry Kitson; Darwyn Cooke (w/a)
#4 – Stargirl: Johns/Goyer, Mike McKone; James Robinson, Tony Harris
#5 – Hourman: Johns/Goyer, Adam DeCrocker; Howard Chaykin (w/a)
#6 – Hawkgirl: Johns/Goyer, Phil Winslade; Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale
#7 – Dr. Midnight: Johns/Goyer, Steve Sadowski; Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Rizzo
#8 – JSA: Johns/Goyer (w), Sal Velluto, Bob Almond

Steve also revealed over at the JSA board (http://dcboards.warnerbros.com/files/Forum18/HTML/010132.html) that he has two big projects, one is JSA-related (which has not been greenlit), the other is not JSA-related.

HEY GUYS!!

Umm, While I AM about to start on a big project..it's not JSA related...

"the (other BIG) PROJECT" is a long awaited thing Geoff and I want to do..It IS JSA related, but it has NOT been green lit , although we BOTH say we should be able to get started on it sometime in 2003.

Stay tuned for news on the new thing sometime in the next month or so..It should be very exciting..it makes me hands sweaty just thinking about it..

Great article, Benjamin. It's nice having all of this information in one place. And thanks Jim, for letting us have a glimpse at the art. Waiting until the 9th is a little easier now.

I like the art but i doubt ill pick this up. I have heard it is very much a continuity title and IMO a good writer should make every issue of his comics easy for new readers to get into otherwise said Writer isnt doing his job.

Uhm...sorry but this series is based on Marvel continuity. It's not made for readers to jump on. They can get the first TPB if they want to jump on or the first issues of Paradise X.

I think I'll look into getting Jim's new stuff also.

mikecool
Oct 8, 2002, 11:03 am
that doesnt excuse the writer though. Fact is this could be a person's first comic ever and it should be made where it makes that new reader want to come back. Sure there are TPB but i wont buy them because i dont feel like buying two TPB's plus back issues where there are plenty of other titles that are easy to get into and have just as high quality.

So who said this book isn't friendly for new readers? Jim explains everything new readers need to know in all of his X trilogy books (while leaving enough mystery that he's not giving away all the secrets), so there's really no reason newcomers to the trilogy won't be able to fathom Devils. Is it based heavily on past Marvel continuity? Yep. Does it also have a rather involved continuity unique to it? You bet. But involving a story in deep continuity doesn't make it a bad story. If anything, there are so few comics these days that actually take advantage of Marvel's deep history. These days, the policy is pretty much to ignore everything, which is sad. Marvel continuity is definitely convoluted most of the time (and I won't deny that the X series is sometimes just as complicated), but there's no reason why a writer can't reference history without

Trust me, mikecool, the issues stand on their own to an extent, but reading one makes ya want to read the others. If comic books were so self-contained that there's no reason to pick up any other issues, it'd be kind of hard for comics to float as a business. I guarantee you won't be completely lost by reading Devils, and the TPBs won't be a waste of money. Still, keep in mind that Krueger is a very cerebral writer, so nothing he writes is a quickly dashed off, oversimplified-to-keep-newbies-happy story.

But it's u to you what you read and buy.

well might i add it is listed $4.50 does anybody else think that just a TAD high.

Well, mikecool, nobody's stopping you from buying this book. But we are encouraging you to do so. I know that the price is a bit too high, but you could always wait for the trade where you could enjoy the entire story.

I think $2.50 for a standard 32-page comic is too high, but it's not pretty much the norm.

Based on that, $4.50 for a 48-page comic seems reasonable to me.

With permission from Jim Krueger, check out his original script proposal for Devils: A Paradise X Special!

Originally posted by Jim Krueger at his Krueger X discussion forum: (http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=34)

THE OTHER DEVILS SPECIAL (SPOILER)

Before I wrote the script for Devils, I wrote a different plot, one which named DD. DDs. It also featured a very different ending.

But Alex didn't feel Daredevils' identity should be made known. At least, not yet. And then I had the Invisible Woman idea... and the idea of having Namor do something sccidentally evil again... well, the idea had some holes... and the story changed a lot.

But for you who enjoy seeing the process and the rewriting I did, here's the way the first DEVILS SPECIAL would have appeared. This was written very long before I wrote the regular script and was a combination of first thoughts.

DAREDEVILS SPECIAL –

PG Opens on a series of Daredevil performances where he is killing himself (themselves) before less and less before. He’s losing his audience. In the end he looks out over the few diehard fans he has and realizes that it’s just not funny anymore.

PGS 2- 3
CUT TO A FLASHBACK OF THE END OF UNIVERSE X:
IN THE REALM OF THE DEAD:

(REED RICHARDS WILL BE NARRATING)

(Thanos, with the Ultimate Nullifier in hand, raises it to the embodiment of DEATH. She says nothing, and then, almost at the very moment Thanos triggers the Nullifier, Death says "wait.")

And then is nullified utterly.

The heroes stare as a portal is opened, creating a vortex of light that led right to the heart of the NEGATIVE ZONE.

FLASHBACK ENDS:

PGS 4-5
CUT TO LATVERIA. CASTLE DOOM.

Reed Richards, Susan Richards, Immortus, the Thing, Banner and Hulk, Reject and Mar-Vell sit at one end of a long rectangular Dracula-esque table. (The Ant-Men have a smaller table they are sitting at that sits upon this one).

There are wine goblets that they’ve all drunk from. Reed is serving a synthesized Pot Roast.

They are dealing with what’s happening. And we learn that the NULLIFIER nullifies by transporting its target into the anti-matter zone of the NEGATIVE ZONE.

Mar-Vell explains that this was the last thing he saw… the entering into the Negative Zone. To a certain degree, Mar-Vell is now a human.

PGS 6-8
CUT TO A LITTLE LESS THAN ONE YEAR AGO:

A battle is being fought in the streets of Italy (off the Mediterranean) between NAMOR and the PLANTMAN (Sam Smithers) who has literally grown the city of Italy over with Ivy.

Namor is burning up half of the city’s foliage. The Oxygen the plants put off is making them easy to burn… Smithers doesn’t understand what’s happening… he did not threaten the sea or the life which has gone unhindered by the changes to the surface world.

Some people watch what’s happening… including Mr. Church.

Namor lets him know that it’s been a long time since he embraced both his Atlantean heritage and his own humanity.

Namor then fries Smithers…

The entire city goes up in flame… it’s reflected in the water as well… joined in the reflection is the image of Mephisto watching in amazement.

END FLASHBACK

PGS 9-11
CUT TO LATVERIA. CASTLE DOOM.

Reed notes that this was the first should-be casualty. Certainly not the last.

The Death of Death has created a vacuum.

Where once DEATH herself was the transport from this world to the next (Sue makes some vague recollections of what it was like to walk amongst the dead).

When she was nullified, she became a transport to the Negative Zone, cutting all those here off from the next realm.

Immediately, all the heroes look at Mar-Vell for some sort of understanding. But Mar-Vell has no idea how this happened. This could not have been a conspiracy like they are suggesting. He would have known.

And yet, he had no idea this would happen.

No idea of the suffering that would be caused.

FLASHBACK TO THE CREATION OF THE HOSPITALS OUT OF THE REMAINS OF THE HUMAN TORCHES.

"Who would have guessed that the torches would house all those whose lights should have gone out long ago."

Reed speculates that the doorway too the Negative Zone can only now be opedned from the inside, that there’s no way to contact Mar-Vell (the other Mar-Vell), that they are going to have to look for a new Death of their own.

The THING asks him what they do if they can’t find a new guy.

Reed comments that they do what Reed always does—make one.

"All I need is a volunteer."

PGS 12-15

A CIRCUS TENT: IDAHO

The Daredevils do their circus act and recognize that this is a dead-end job.

There’s only one person watching now, an old woman who laughs throughout the show, even at the unfunny stuff.

Worse, it’s obvious that the Daredevils are getting tired of each other… one of them suggests going back to the one-man show on different continents simultaneously. They could simultaneously commit suicide in the various time-zones. Sort of a shot felt round the world.

The old woman sits in the audience and continues laughing.

PGS 16-17 They are aroused by the presence of Kid Mar-Vell, Ben Grimm, the Bros. Brim and Dogface and Tower (old allies now members of the X-Men). (The BROS. GRIMM are especially grateful now getting the chance to meet their hero).

PGS 18-21 Ben Grimm opens his hand, revealing a disk in the center of it.. A hologram of Reed appears in the middle of it and Reed explains that they need a volunteer to be DEATH to all those who suffer in the hospitals.

DDs ask how he can possibly become Death to the minions of the world.

Reed explains that he believes that Death was not the only force in the world. There are other forces, that may, indeed operate in a similar way to Death, given the opportunity. They just require someone to try it on.

Reed looks at the DDS and tells them that should they volunteer, there’s every chance that something will go wrong and they could die in the process. (at this the DDs get a little excited).

"But if you are successful stewards of this new force, for one moment, every person on Earth will see your act before they die. You’ll be the act they are dying to see."
FLASHBACK of various disasters and attacks from Mephisto in different forms… Reed Richards explains that there is a danger… Mephisto… will stop him at any chance… he is attempting to keep mankind suffering… attempting to make certain mankind does not escape to the other realms…

Daredevil makes makes a comment about what kind of messed up world it is where the heroes are trying to find ways to kill everyone and the Devil is trying to keep them all alive.

DDs look around themselves and laugh… saying they’ll do it.

The Old Woman who has been watching it all is revealed as Mephisto. Mephisto takes the form of one of the Daredevils and joins them while one of the Daredevils turns around to see where the woman is… and is disappointed to find her gone.

PGS 22-23 The ship with all of the teammates takes off for with Ben Grimm even making a statement of how he doesn’t know how many DDs there are anymore. In the midst of this, Mephisto attempts to damage some of the equipment and etc. But, of course, he has to do it in a way that would lead to his own destruction and therefore ongoing suffering. Establishment of the story of Jude the Entropic Man (reference Captain America MTIO #42-43) and Ben Grimm’s dealings with him in the past and of the cosmic cube that allowed him, as a force, to be contained without – we also learn that this force said that it would wait until mankind begged for its return.

PG 24-25 The ship arrives in the Everglades, a desolate overgrown swampland that’s almost like a new SavageLand, but unlike the Savage Land, most of it is now submerged… the ship hovers above it… and then begins to fall apart… smoke and fall apart… (thanks to Mephisto)

PGS 26-27 The team, with typical FF gear on dive into the waters in search of the crystal statue that is the encased being of JUDE, the ENTROPIC MAN, barely escaping the destruction of the ship. They have weapons of a sort that seem almost like old Flash Gordon-type underwater rifles…

PGS 28-29 They look up and watch as everything blows up in their faces… and barely escape into the water below them. Watching them make their way through the sea are a number of LIZARD-Like creatures.

PGS 30-33 The team is captured (after some fighting) and taken before, of all things, the Entropic Man crystal which they worship like a god.

PGS 34-35 In the midst of this, Daredevil (the real Daredevil) realizes that these lizard like things are the same little lizards that he, so many years ago, before he experimented on himself—it is here that we discover that the identity of Daredevil is none other than Dr. Curt Conners, who had been the Lizard.—This kept secret from the others, though.

PGS 36-41 The Mephisto Daredevil reveals his disguise, growing in form into a giant snake-like creature. In his grip is the crystal. He grows larger and larger, becoming more snakelike, more like a giant serpent. … the Lizards swarm over him. The heroes swarm over him, but they and the Lizards have no hope… the devil gloats that they haven’t a prayer… and that’s when Ben remembers what JUDE said—that he would not return until mankind begged him to… and that’s when Ben and the others begin to beg him to return.

The crystal begins to glow… and the devil realizes what’s happening, he lets go of it, allowing it to sink into the depths… he swims off, fearful of his own life… while the Crystal begins to glow…

And then the water shoots up… as if this were like the TEN COMMANDMENTS and the parting of the RED SEA (Mephisto stares at them though the water) as the heroes and the Lizards stands around the returned Jude.

PGS 42-45 Ben lifts his hand and Reed Richards begins to speak to Jude, telling him of the world, of their need for DEATH. of the Daredevils who cannot die and how the hope that they will be his hands around the world.

The Daredevils stick their hands into Jude, filling them with the power of entropy.

Cut to days later…

PGS 46-48 One of the Daredevils comes before the charred body of Sam Smithers (Plant Man) in a hospital. The Plant Man says he’s not worthy of this peace DD is bringing him (of which DD says he understands). DD reaches out and helps Smithers into the afterlife.

Around Smithers, the other patients begin to cry for joy.
