Beginning in January with Ultimate X-Men #27 and running through to May's issue #33, 'Return of The King' focuses on Magneto ascension back to power and the revivification of his ultimate plan as the war on mankind hits overdrive.

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0103/Ulti_XMen_27.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0103/Ulti_XMen_27t.jpg" align=right alt="Ultimate X-Men #27 preview"></a>"'Return of The King' is the final part of my two and a half year run on this book," Millar told X-Fan. "This is where I get to set light to all the little fireworks I've been planting since issue one. Every plot thread established since I started will be tied up here; from whether Charles Xavier is mind-controlling the students to do what he wants to who that damn cat has been all along. It's also where we see the return of characters like Nightcrawler, the Muir Island cast and perhaps Gambit to a lesser extent."

"Most importantly, however, it's also Magneto's big story. This is what he was planning when he was interrupted by the Sentinels at the end of issue five. This is his big play for dominance over homo-sapien and his plan makes 'The Tomorrow People' look like two girls pulling each others hair in the schoolyard. It's a lot of fun."

Millar said that as the Ultimate War mini-series was borne out of events in the 'Hellfire and Brimstone' arc in Ultimate X-Men, it will all come full circle as the conclusion of the War will, in turn, fold into the 'Return of The King' arc.

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0203/ULT_WAR_4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0203/ULT_WAR_4t.jpg" align=right alt="Ultimate War #4 preview"></a>"When I started these books, we were all adamant that we weren't going to have Spidey appearing in Ultimates and so on," Millar explained. "Too many characters are a treat for the fanboys, but a sensory overload to the casual reader. Think about {the shark from} Jaws appearing in The Godfather and then getting taken away by the spacecraft at the end of Close Encounters. It's just too much."

"That said, the events of Ultimate X-Men #25 and the return of Magneto were exactly (precisely) the kind of mission the Ultimates were put together for so it would be foolish for them to ignore what's happening. Ultimate War is essentially the establishment response to the return of Magneto and 'Return of The King' is basically the X-Men finishing the job. Without spoiling issue four, we find a very different X-Men by the time they re-emerge in their own book. A very, very crucial difference has occurred in the pages of Ultimate War."

The conclusion of 'Return of The King' in May's issue #33 also marks Millar's departure from the series he has guided since its inception. Millar told X-Fan that the decision to leave the series wasn't an overly-difficult one, as he had always envisaged his tenure as having a distinct end.

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0203/ULT_XMEN_29.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0203/ULT_XMEN_29t.jpg" align=right alt="Ultimate X-Men #29 preview"></a>"The funny thing is that I'd made the decision before I started the first issue so I always saw this as a four or five book run," Millar revealed. "Everyone said I was crazy because this book really does generate a lot of money in royalties (by far my biggest earner), but I think you have to stick to your guns and the final arc is the one I've been building towards. Chase the cheque and you'll never really stretch yourself as a writer. I'll miss the characters, I'll miss the editorial team, I'll miss seeing pages from Adam {Kubert, series artist} every week more than anything in the world, but I'm pleased to wrap up on the best arc and hopefully make everybody miss me when I'm gone. Get off the stage when their still clapping, that's what I have engraved on my forehead."

As to what the he has planned post-Ultimate X-Men, Millar told X-Fan that he has plenty in the offering across several different media formats.

"{My} Ultimate X-Men wraps in May when {X-Men 2} comes out and (hopefully) we're on maximum interest," said Millar. "A month or two later I launch a very big project for Marvel, but the details will be under wraps for at least another couple of months. I don't start writing this until I finish Ultimate X-Men and, as long as I don't get too drunk over Christmas, I should have my final script in Adam's hands before I take off on holiday at the end of January."

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0203/ultimates_10.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0203/ultimates_10t.jpg" align=right alt="Ultimates #10 preview"></a>"My tenure on The Ultimates, of course, will run until around Summer 2004 and I'm also launching a revamp of a very famous Marvel franchise somewhere around the end of 2003. This won't be an Ultimate book. This will be something set in the Marvel Universe and, now that I think about it, my first real project for mainstream Marvel. It's something Joe suggested to me weeks ago and I originally turned down but then, on the flight back from a Marvel meeting in New York last week, I suddenly came up with a great way of doing it and called Joe as soon as I got home. I genuinely can't wait to get moving on this revamp, the details probably going public somewhere around late spring."

"My agent is talking to several animation and movie places about the creator-owned stuff and the slightly unusual way we're doing this is selling the Hollywood deal first and doing the comic later. All three artists are already lined up for each of these three books (one eight parter and two four parters) and we're shooting for an October launch. Outside of comics, I'm working on a children's book thanks to Mister Neil Gaiman and I want to have that completed by late Summer."

DOes it mean that the events in Ultimate X-Men #25 lead to Ultimate War and the events in the crossover lead to The Return of the King? I wonder how this'll all be tied up as War and King come out together. A better way would be to have only Ultimate War for three months (#1 and #2 come out in the same month, remember? ANd the third and fourth issue comes monthly after that) with no Ultimate X-Men issues and UXM resumes after War finishes so as not to confuse reasers and fans. But who am I, anyway? But still I hope there won't be delay in the issues coming out as scheduled as Ultimate Adventures #4 which ties in to the War comes out after the War is over!

Ultimate Adventures is tied into Ultimate War? Return of the King sounds promising. Anyone know who will be taking over Ultimate X-Men when Mark Millar leaves?

The whole War fits in between 25 and 27, since 26 is almost all flashbacks. If one was to detail the order of all the Millar books, it probably would go like this...

Ultimate x-men 26

Ultimate x-men 1-14 (although it's possible that 13-14 were either before the Wepon X arc)

Ultimates 1-13 & Ultimate x-men 15-24

Ultimate x-men 25

Ultimate War 1-4

Ultimate x-men 27.

So the next 6 issues of the Ultimates will be before the Ultimate War. We do know that the Ultimates fight some kind of 'monsters' (from Ultimate War #1) in the next six issues.

I have no idea where Ultimate Aventures 4 would fit though....I'm assuming it will fit someplace in the Ultimate War series....

Wow, huh? I've been more confused. Sure. But it has been quite awhile.

Actually, I assumed that the monster mentioned in Ultimate War #1 was in reference to the Hulk.

The "monsters" are the Skrulls of the Ultimate Universe, I believe.

Millar is way too cryptic with his upcoming projects. I'm looking forward to their announcement though.

I canīt get Ultimate books here in my country. But every time I visit the U.S I go get every trade paperback iīm interested in. To be honest I donīt like very much the concept of the Ultimate universe (i prefer the regular one because Iīm a continuity freak ha!), but iīm sure picking up The Ultimate x-men trades to see what I may be missing.

OH! and that Hawkeye pic is great (also Jeanīs) but is it me or does he look A LOT like Kevin Costner?. :)

I'm honestly more interested in Mark's mainstream Marvel project than any of his Ultimate stuff. All of the Ultimate Marvel titles ceased to interest me after their first story arcs wrapped. I'll probably read the rest of Ultimate War, but I won't be picking up 'Return of the King' and I don't think I feel like waiting three months between each issue of the Ultimates anymore either---especially with the Avengers starting to look really good. I think I'll just read that instead, which means that I'm no longer reading anything with an 'Ultimate' in the title.

So, having said that, anyone got any idea what Millar's post-Ultimate X-men project is? I heard a rumor that it's supposed to be Ghost Rider. I hope that turns out to be true. I'm a big fan of the character and didn't like the last Marvel Knights Ghost Rider mini-series. Hopefully Mark will do a better job on the 'ol Spirit of Vengeance---if it turns out to be true, that is.

Hope he goes back into the regular universe. There are books that could use some good writing. Maybe he could work in an Alpha Flight revamp ultimate-but-regular style.

I think Millar is going to do something with a New Mutants like title. He is pretty good at writing "realistic" teenage characters.

SO this final arc for Miller along with Ultimate War will tie everything together. I bet it will be big, i just hope Ultimate X contrinues afterwards

Assuming that they don't just get another artist during that time, his run could potentially last much longer. If he turns all of his scripts in that are supposed to come out during that two year period and then Hitch takes his time drawing them his run could last for many years.

Is it a wish or a rumor??

If Hitch remains as Penciler for Millers entire run we are looking at Millers run finishing somewhere around 2006 at the latest

Can't remember which artist is being spoken off in the same breath though.

I was thinking could this "relaunch" of a long standing charecter be Ghost Rider ? just a thought. I Will miss Millar but then again i wont i really really enjoyed his first 17 issues but since #18 the book hasnt felt the same and while i enjoy it my enjoyment is much, much lower than it was. Im a little suprised Marvel would want Mark's last issue to come out right around the movie since I think it would help to have the New writer's (please be Brian Vaughn) first issue as a jumping on point instead of a writer's final issue which is usually about clearing up long standing plot points.

since Millar has state the ultimate X-Men will be virtually unrecognizable at the end of his run, does it seem possible that he will use the Ultimate War crossover to move the Beast into the Ultimates for a while? I really like hanks' development as the back up leader until the current arc where he sold out the secrets...

interesting stuff ut the delays on ultimates are really effecting the book and the ultimate war and in turn uultimate x men.
im interested in what millars revamp of an existing marvel book is?
intial thoughts are either avengers, fantatsic four or maybe (in my dreams) thunderbolts as the original team conmes back! :D

I'm hoping that Millar's MU relaunch is something like Ghost Rider or Silver Surfer. Something kind of obscure.....

millars "revamp" title for the marvel universe? what does everyone think hes talking about? i dont think its x-related, personally.

Man, these covers are good. I can't wait to get the continuing issues to see what happens. I like how UXM has turned out to be. It'll be sad seeing Millar leave UXM, since he's the one that started this book in the first place. Good luck, Mark on whatever you have planned next for us...It will be a bit hard to understand how this arc and crossover connects together, but I hope we'll get it eventually ;)

Well, that could mean anything. It is a revamp - that much we know. So, you have to look at past ongoing series that ended up being cancelled. From what Millar said, I was getting the feeling that it was either a team-up like revamp or a team book. I seriously doubt that it's a book centering around a single hero.

Oh, well. We will all find out eventually what this "mystery project" is.

Current Capt. America and former Cla$$war artist mentioned in the latest Wizard (#137) that he loves Ultimates. And his style is quite similar to Hitch's. Hmmm...

And Marvel said they were not doing major crossovers like this again. I guess that the story changes if certain "hot talent" are doing it. Guess that is why Quesada said that MARVEL TEAM-UP would never work again for Marvel then suddenly Benids is doing one and only Bendis. :/
