It has to be a bit of a daunting task, even for a writer like Chris Claremont, to return to one of the most popular X-Men stories ever written, and to try and top it. I'm not saying that's what Claremont necessarily has in mind for this story, but one never starts out writing thinking 'this will be a LESSER version'. And I must say, for all intents and purposes, I'm very pleased with how this has all started out.
First things first... I've never read 'God Loves, Man Kills'. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I could never find a copy, and while they recently re-released it into the market, it costs almost $10 Canadian at a time when I'm moving, and quite honestly, don't have a lot of money. I DID flip through it, so does that count?
Probably not.
But I've heard enough, and read the synopsis and various other helpful guides to get me through this review. I swear!
Usually I save my talk about the artist for later, but seeing as how this is Igor Kordey's first issue, and the first thing that really leaps off the page at you, it seemed odd to leave it for later. The first thing I noticed was that this was NOT Salvador Larroca's work. Even though I had seen the preview pages for X-Treme X-Men #25 a few weeks before, I was surprised at how jarring it was to come into this book with a new artist.
It's not because I don't like Kordey, or think his work substandard. It's just like going to see Batman & Robin when you're expecting the original Batman movie. It just isn't the same. Though I must say that I'm impressed with how well Kordey is able to capture the writing by Claremont, and how his gritty style seems to mesh well with the original tale. Stryker is a fearsome looking man, and the other action elements of the book were played off wonderfully. I definitely give the book a thumbs up in terms of art.
As for the story, I'm more pleased than I thought I would be. I know to expect a high level of writing from Claremont, and he rarely lets me down there, but with such a high-pressure story hot on the tails of the release of X-Men 2 I was worried that he might feel the pressure to conform to the film. Other than the inclusion of Lady Deathstrike (who is FANTASTIC in this story. Deadly, beautiful, and mysteriously connected to Stryker), this story definitely stands on its own.
I thought it was great seeing a mix of new and old in what feels like a classic X-Men setting. You've got Cannonball with Bishop and Sage, working alongside Wolverine, Storm, and then Shadowcat who pops up later in the book. While Cannonball isn't exactly new, it's his fresh addition to the book, and the seamless interplay that Claremont has injected (including remembering the friendship he and Wolverine shared in the pages of Wolverine a few years ago) that makes it so outstanding. I was worried that having Sage, in particular, hanging around would affect the dynamic given that she can be such a cold character. Instead, she works just as well as any of the others, and sets herself up to be an interesting mirror for Stryker or Deathstrike.
Stryker was perhaps the one who got the least amount of time in the spotlight. If I could have suggested anything, a bit more information about him, his goals, and his personality would give a little more weight to any potential threat he possessed. After Wolverine refers to him as someone who came close to eliminating mutants, I was hoping for something a bit meatier. The story didn't necessarily need the detail, but I'm a lover of the fine points that can be brought in. Perhaps in the next few issues.
Also, I'm curious about Stryker and the fact that he's alive. From what I know, didn't he die at the end of the original? Well, given that it was released as a trade many years ago, and didn't impact much on continuity, I suppose that's something that's easily swept under the rug. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though! (Must buy the book).
What I enjoyed the most about this book, was that it was the X-Men I know and love. A mysterious situation, a frame-up, and then an ambush where the whole team is taken down. Right away I'm eager for more, feel nervous at their chances, and I'm thrilled to see something REALLY dangerous happen to them. Over in Uncanny X-Men, and especially in New X-Men, I never feel fear for the characters. Nothing ever seems like it can hurt them. Oh, I know there have been deaths in both books recently, but they seem removed from the team, somehow.
Claremont is at the top of his form here, and it's clear that the excitement surrounding the movie, the novelization (which he wrote), and now his sequel in the pages of X-Treme X-Men have ignited his writer's soul. I can't wait to see more.
Oh, and the movie is great, too!
Check it out today!

I completely agree especially where you mentioned having fear for the characters. CC does it like no one else... or maybe like Milligan ^_^ anyway I liked this issue minus how fast the X-Men were takin down.. especially Cannonball with a net? and Sage taken by surprise like that... Oh well it'll get better I'm sure. See the suspense and what's at stake is already starting to rise. That's what I love most.

THIS should have been the 25 cent issue. This would have a chance of giving people who liked the movie the experience they're looking for in an X-Book, especially since the movie was based on Claremont's work, and the novelization was written by Claremont.
awesome book . . . i enjoyed this more than any other X-Treme issue lately, though I thought Schism was great.

I already touched on this issue over in XI. So as to not beat it to death, I'll just summarize:
Story: Ok. Probably too high and unfair expectations. Kitty scene = great.
Art: Average at best. The story was more action oriented, which I felt Kordey did a poor job of conveying that.
Overall: Still expecting the story to be great overall over the nect 3 issues, but I thought this issue was average.

Great issue. My only problem is that Deathstrike and Stryker are too connected. I've never seen the two of them together and then, BOW, it's like they're old buddies.
Hopefully we'll see that touched on, as well as Deathstrike's relationship with Wolverine.
Can't wait for next issue!

Yeah, I know a lot of people think that Chris is an egotistical mutton-head (I don't think these things, Chris...REALLY !:D ) Or that he has somehow "lost his edge". No one deserves bragging rights more than CC at this point! GLMK is a killer story, so if any of you have never read it, do your self a favor and read it.
This sequal starts well, but I have a feeling its gonna finish better
You can never really "top" a classic, but you sure can write a another one ;)

Eee!
First off, I have never seen any comic where my home-town in Montana was mentioned and that makes me very happy.
But on to the comic. I personally thought the art was very pretty, especially on Deathstrike (and, I have to admit, it's rare that I like how female characters are drawn anywhere). The dialogue was snappy, the story nicely tense, and, yes.
The only thing that bothered me was the font and how the emphasis showed up LIKE THIS. It was a little distracting.

It's not bashing if I have constructive criticism about him, which I have detailed in the #25 thead in the institute forum. People do have differing opinions ya know.

For Kordey, I'm gonig to agree with Tan here. His big weakness was action --the other scenes were good. Unfortunately, this arc should probably have quite a bit of action to go along with the cerebral stuff, and the colors while usually good, don't help the mood much. Still, I liked the art here, it's been growing on me and it should get better.
I really should get the original GLMK, but I'm cheap and don't have much money. But I'm pretty sure that this story would pretty well have to be inferior to the original. (Still, it looks like I'll enjoy it a whole lot as the premise remains strong) Stryker has what few other villains have. A notable history that inspires hate and fear --but at the same time he hasn't been used nearly as much as others. I can't think of many other villains like that. This tsoyr gives us all what we needed to see at the beginning, and the ending certainly makes me want to see whats going to happen next. Good setup for this story, I should like it more than Schism. But I still miss Larocca.

I really enjoyed this story, and as one who liked the original GLMK, I have high hopes for the rest of the saga. Didn't Chris say that another new member was going to join the team, and that it was one who had already appeared in these pages? Here's hoping Kitty comes back home where she belongs.
Am I the only one who is irritated by that mutant lawyer? The one who turns into a dragon when blood hits her? I don't know what it is about her, but she bugs me...from the weird power to the vampire attire, she just seems wrong.

I thought that the story was good!
I loved the writing but the art need some work!
Sorry, Kordey but..........i don't really like your art very much!
No offense, but it doesn't grab me!
But it seems to have aproved from the run on New X-Men!
(i couldn't tell which were the students and which were the adults!)
This is my favorite comic title so I'm going to stay with it even if I don't like the artist!
I miss Sal! :(

Well I loved this issue, The artwork was great to me, 10 times better than his stuff he did for New X-Men, the character's faces and appearances were very clear and he took alot of time on this issue. The Story was great, I loved the quoting from scripture, it fit well into the story. Deathstrike's new image is cool, she doesn't look exactly like the movie and that's good. I thought it was kind of a movie thing too, but really it isn't the only reason I said that was because with the last X-Men movie, we had Mystique planning Kelly's assasination with Sabertooth and a moviesque looking Toad which just bugged me. The story rocked and I loved Sam and Kitty's appearances. I'm glad that Wolverine told Bishop not to call Sam boy- reminds me of Thunderbird.

If you were referring to the lawyer who appeared on the television in the bar; I don't think that was the same woman.

there's always bound to be some incomformaty when a book changes its penciler that's penciled all the book's run for another one with a different style, but Kordey adds somethign new to the book, maybe when we see GLMK II as a whole, we'll notice it better (usually happens with arcs).
All around great issue, glad to see Sam back on a core X-team and Kitty making a comeback. Stryker's portrayal is on the mark as well as Deathstrike's, really great issue.
Lockheed, the weird lawyer is freaky at best but everyone adds somethign new to the book and CC might have more plans for her as the run goes along.

ok...kordey's work isn't bad when you look at it on its own. however, after the spectacular work we've seen from larocca, the art just seemed very weak. as i turned from the awesome cover to the first page, i was almost shocked at how different everything was. it didnt feel like xtreme xmen anymore...maybe that has something to do with larroca's absence...
however, i can't really complain about that. this is a great classic xmen story. while it lacked the xtreme edge, claremont's story was great.
i loved claremonts use of characters. kitty and wolverine are great to see, and he writes them better than anyone. it was also good to see sage written well after her unfortunate portrayal in new xmen this month.
can't wait to see what happens next.

Man , I can't stand Kordey's art !
Ok it's better than all his previous work but it still ugly and he's not fitt for Xtreme .
Please Marvel give us a better penciler than Kordey , cause we are paying for it ...Xtreme cost more than the others X-titles .
The story was ok and I like having Cannonball on the team but I too i'm intrigue about Stryker and about his relationship with LadyD. ( by the way , didn't she turn good ??? in a annual or something ????) .

I have to agree with most people. Kordey's art here was better than his New X-Men and Cable stuff, but still nothing to get excited about. Some scenes actually looked really nice, but some things like the messed up looking proportions like his lips and (Wolverine at the bottom of the 2nd page) and some of his stiff takes on hair are still there. Hopefully, he can phase those out soon.

Stryker was shot at the end of GLMK, but it never said the shot was lethal...
and the connection between Deathstryke and Stryker seems too convenient for a movie tie-in, the characters had never even met before had they? i guess maybe Claremont will give us some more back story on this...
as for Kordey's art, it usually is hit and miss, i liked a lot of his Soldier X stuff, and his New was either good, or bad...this seems to side with the good...

Oh man Brian... God Loves Man Kills is great. Really, really, great. Spend those 10 bucks, and believe me this, it's worth it.
I loved this issue. It was so great to see such a rewarding story- and I'm seriously looking foreward to Cannonball and Storm's (it was them two, right?) finding out about the others... and Chris says Colossus and Illyana are going to show up somehow... oh, this is great!

I like how the story is starting off but as much as an improvement of his New X-men art i still hate Kordey's work it just always feels rushed especially his action scenes (Wolverine been shot been a prime example)

Great review, Brian. I liked this issue, and the artwork done by Igor was cool. My favorite parts throughout the issue was when Logan laughs towards Sam's snick up attack on Storm and she outsmarted him.. There was alot of great action throughout the book which was interesting, including the resurrection of Yuriko Oyama (a.k.a. Lady Deathstrike). However, in the mutant sequel, Yuriko has a huge one on one battle with arch-nemesis, Wolverine while duking it all out. Other than that, this issue was great.

i liked the issue, and didnt mind the art that much....just some of the faces look, i dunno, funny? bishop and xaviers eyes/eyebrows looks like they have been squished down? ..
the ladyD and stryker partnership was very sudden for my liking, i hope they explain it and didnt just chuck it in there becuase it happened in the movie.
also, i'd like ladyd to look her robotic self,....not like a normal person with extended claws

i dont know if ill enjoy this story, still up in the air for now. the airplane scenes reminded me alot of con-air, and i too didnt really think claremont sells the relationship between stryker and deathstrike well, either. good to see kitty back, same with sam being around. kordeys work is alright here, honestly i just would rather see someone else on this title if sals elsewhere. but it still makes for an alright read.

Nice review Brian, I totally agree. I loved this issue. This is Igor's best work to date.
Lady Deathstrike looked very beautiful. As seen in the X-men 2000 Annual, Deathstrike looked human except she was bald. Now she just has hair.
I also really enjoyed the story itself. Loved all the character moments. And it's totally believable that the X-men got captured. The soldiers had the element of surprise on their side. Though I think the one that got the drop on Sage was a mutant because they used an energy blast on her to knock her out.
Anyways, GREAT issue!

The art in this issue is a vast improvement over Igor's previous work in New Xmen. When did Kitty kill someone? Did this happen during her Excalibur days? And who did she snuff out?

I haven't read #25 yet because I wanted to read GLMK first and haven't had the time yet. I have the original Graphic Novel but I read that YEARS ago. I grew to like Mr. Kordey's work on Cable after time it really fit in with the story but his work on NXM was out of place. The final page of the issue (?) where Emma was sitting on a chair trying to seduce Scott looking ( or at least Mr. Kordey trying to meke her look ) rather slutty was a real turn off. It made me wish that Marvel would re-do the issue with Mr. Quitely's art. It was very revolting. However I will reserve judgement untill I see his XXM work. It is very hard to top Mr. Larrocca's work.
My favourite X-Men artists:
Marc Silvestri
Jim Lee
Salvador Larrocca
Frank Quitely
Art Adams
Bill Sienkiewicz

Yeah, the lawyer lady showed up on TV here. I don't mind her presence as a mutant rights lawyer but I really hated her intro a couple issues ago...and I have a feeling that Chris intends her for team membership. Bring back Lifeguard or Slipstream first. Or better yet, Kitty.
But still, an awesome story. With this and the recent announcement of Chris and John Byrne's reunion on JLA, Chris can once again be counted among the hottest of authors! In my opinion, he never left.

Seriously, you guys are making too much of this. She just appeared on TV because it was the station Kitty was watching. That's quite a leap to make if she's joining the team. It's not the same woman, anyway. The dragon lady had BLACK hair. This one has BROWN hair. Also, they looked nothing alike.

I'm already nervous enough as it is without thinking about THAT. Besides, CC mentioned something about a MekaniX follow-up in the future (*crosses fingers*), and Kitty's supposed to turn up in the new Wolverine series.
She may not look like much, but she's a survivor. One of her major advantages is that folks tend to underestimate her.

I don't think Chris would kill her...he seems to be against deaths of characters and he's said in the past that Kitty is his personal favorite. The reason why I'm making a big deal about the lawyer is that a while ago Chris said that later this year we'd get a new member, and that it was a person that already appeared in this title. This made me think of Red Lotus, the Austrailian officer that befriended Bishop, and the dragon lady that had just made her debut. Add Kitty to the short list of candidates that i can see. But for some reason I don't see Lotus joining and I really don't want to see the cop, and as much as I'd like to see Kitty join, I dunno....

I can answer that. It happened in Excalibur #16, during the Cross-Time Caper. The gang was captured by ursurpers of a kingdom, led by a blonde lady (I forget her name, I need to get the ish again) who looked like Opal Luna Saturnye (and Sat-YR-9). Kurt met a woman who looked just like him (again, forgot the name) who was the true princess, but captured as well. Naturally, the team helped her reclaim her kingdom. During the battle, the true princess went head to head with the blond lady and went down. Just when Blondie was about to land a killing blow, Kitty skewered her from behind.
And there you have it...

The more I look at Kordey's art the more I like it. Especially the little details...look at the last page of the issue. Stryker is walking into the Belles of Hell and quoting scirpture...his head is all in shadow...a demon's head tops the doorway.

X-treme X-men has been one of my favorite X books for quite some time now. I am curious to see where this lastest story arc is going to go.
Personally, I felt that this issue seemed a little rushed and it is trying to hard to tie into the X-2 movie.
I am very glad to see Cannonball and my favorite New Mutants starting to turn up!
Is there any truth to the rumor that Sunspot may also show up in X-treme?

From what I read of some of Chris's past posts, yes I think there are some plans for Sunspot to be showing up.

Stryker, in one part, proved himself to be one of the greatest villains the X-men ever faced, his cause, his words, are frightning,
even if his appearance wasn't powerfull as his first apperance in GLMK, but the last scene, Stryker walking into the bar, fully shadowed, and when he told Deathstrike that Kitty is perfect, he proved himself once again, of course that's only me.

It says in the original God Loves Man Kills that Stryker was arraigned on charges related to his group of purifiers. Lucky i jsut had my copy out because i saw the movie and was tryin to remember who the heck Stryker was and i remembered this graphic novel and had to read it again.
BTW Eric its nice to be on xfan again i used to be a poster on the old old forums on the original xfan :D

Stryker was shot, that's correct, but he didn't die, in the few last pages of the book the TV report states :
"Stryker was arraigned today on charges arising out of the recent actions of a group of his supporters who call themselves Purifiers."
