Assembled and edited by Jim Lemoine
From what I understand, half of the Marvel Universe are Avengers in reserve. -Anthony Lucynski
From "Cap's Kooky Quartet" to Dr. Druid's mind-controlled squad, from the Black Widow's leather-jacketed warriors to a team that was only Goliath, Hawkeye, and the Wasp, the Avengers have had their share of diverse memberships and big roster changes over the years. Because of this, all of us have our "dream" Avengers line-ups... the ones we'd write into the books if we were Geoff Johns or Kurt Busiek. Sometimes they make perfect sense, sometimes they make none... but they're what we want to see. To gauge opinion on the Avengers line-up, we asked several ComiX-Fan staffers who they would put on their dream seven-member rosters (with the only rule being that all members had to be Marvel characters). Here's what they said....

The Black Knight's New Avengers
Captain America, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Firestar, Justice and so many others lie slain by Baron Zemo’s new Thunderbolts. Several of the remaining Avengers (Among them are Hawkeye, who has been blinded by an energy blast from the woman who claimed to love him – Moonstone; the Wasp, whose wings have been clipped; Quicksilver, who was crippled in the same battle that claimed his comrades and – more importantly – his sister; the Black Knight, who has just given up on himself; and the Black Panther, whose time is rather monopolized by matters of state) have decided to continue the dream by selecting their successors.
The Avengers are dead. Long live the Avengers.

The New Black Knight (Chairman)
Those who know him well call him “John”. Those who only know of him in passing tend to think of him as “Citizen V”. Most people don’t know him at all, and that could be a major obstacle if he wants to lead the World’s most high-profile super-team. This Englishman may be something when it comes to cover-operations, but let's see how he does when the cameras are rolling.
White Tiger
The Black Panther may not have time to watch the team first-hand, but that won’t stop him from keeping a very close eye on them. The other Avengers know this and only really tolerate Kasper Cole’s presence because he now has access – with the Panther’s blessing – to some of the mind-blowing technology from what is arguably the most advanced nation in the world.
Songbird
On the team with Hawkeye’s approval. She tried to stop Zemo from the inside and – having failed at it twice – she’s decided to try a more direct approach.
Mach-6
Henry Peter Gyrich’s contribution to the team is Abe Jenkins. The feds may assure Abe that he’s paid his debt and served his time, but that doesn’t stop the government from keeping him on a short leash and making it very clear that they still don’t trust him. Still, as long as Zemo’s around, sacrifices must be made and as the old saying goes, “it takes a thief to catch a thief.”
Genis-Vell
Captain Marvel is not sponsored by any ex-Avengers or world governments. He’s attached himself to the team almost parasitically because he believes, in his own twisted way, that being part of the team will help him in his insane quest to “make a difference” now that he’s shifted his focus back to Earth. He’s staying around because everyone is too afraid to ask him to leave. Besides, they’re going to need his help to stop the upgraded Thunderbolts. The question remains though, have the Avengers just traded one threat for an even greater one in their midst?
Ricochet
The team’s token mutant/teen/comic relief. The kid has a lot of potential if he could only start to believe in himself and get past his insecurities.
Yellowjacket
Hank Pym’s sanity has always been a fragile thing. He’s been slipping even farther into madness ever since the Wasp’s hospitalization. That’s bad news for Zemo.
This is a team with a lot to Avenge.

Scarlet Witch
Black Panther
The best Avengers teams always have the Big Three (Cap, Iron Man, and Thor)... not only are they popular, not only are their group dynamics great, but they bring important skills to the team (tactical leadership, master technology knowledge, and raw power, respectively). Hawkeye, the Vision, and Wanda are the Almost-As-Big Three... these guys have defined their lives by their love for the team and their adventures with it. Finally, the Black Panther is one of the cooler and more intelligent former Avengers, one with a diverse array of skills and knowledge who brings a very unique perspective to the team.
The actual core, "iconic" Avengers would probably be identical to this list but excepting the Black Panther for the Wasp... but T'Challa beats Jan for this list based on the simple fact that he's usually more interesting.

Captain America (Chairman)
To me he is the ideal Avenger. He is their most prominent member and leader and what he may lack in some categories he makes up for in pure presence. When I think of the Avengers he is the first character that comes to mind.
Wasp
Wasp acts as the team's second in command.
Black Panther
Making the team seem worldlier, he isn’t afraid to get the job done and he isn’t American. He has a different type of presence than Cap in that he is slightly unpredictable. Avengers villains won't know what to expect.
Beast
Hank brings the obvious mutant presence to the team.
Songbird
The former criminal trying to make amends for her past crimes.
She-Hulk
The team's raw power.
Iron Man
Tony brings the over-sized ego... he's a team member who may not get along with everyone else.

Captain America (Chairman)
Gotta go with tradition. The big man has been there for almost every Avengers line up in history, and when he's not there, it just doesn't feel right.
Hawkeye
A personal fave of mine, how can you not like this guy? He's quick witted, has a bow and arrow, and more importantly, wears purple. What's not to like?
Black Widow
Although I confess to not having read her with the team in 616, the Ultimate Version fits in beautifully with her team, and I love the solo 616 character, so there's my reasoning, be as it may.
Iron Man
Another Avengers stalwart, but he is pretty cool, isn't he? No "I say thee nay's" in sight (Mentioning no names. Ahem). So he gets my vote.
Warbird
I have loved good old Carol from the moment I first clapped eyes on her-no comments about the outfit please. Great interesting, dynamic character and she looks good too. Ahem.
Songbird
A firm fave of mine from the days of the dearly departed Thunderbolts. So it should come as no surprise that I have 2 ex-TBolts on my team. Great character who I hope gets on the team sooner rather than later.
Quicksilver
Gotta have a mutant on the squad. Its a mandate. Very underutilized really in terms of Avengers stories. He's a good character.

Wasp
What can I say, she's so tiny!
Hercules
Heavy hitter. Gotta have one of them.
Black Panther
I just think he's cool.
Quicksilver
What an attitude!
Giant-Man
If you have Jan, you gotta have Hank!

Hawkeye's Last Avengers
In the not too distant future, Immortus seeks revenge for his humiliation and defeat at the hands of his eternal nemeses in Avengers Forever. Realizing that the closest he ever came to defeating the Avengers was when he teamed with Baron Zemo's original Masters of Evil (Avengers #10), Immortus seeks out the modern Zemo to offer a partnership. Together, Zemo and Immortus assault the team on two levels: Zemo assembles an army of super-villains to outclass the Avengers' powers, while Immortus subtly works to undermine the team's public trust and government clearance. Immortus and Zemo are eventually defeated, but at a great cost.
Now, the United Nations and United States government have jointly ordered the Avengers disbanded. They claim that the team is a wild card, a threat to world security, and an unsanctioned planetary power. The word is out: any active Avenger will be immediately hunted down and incarcerated as a dangerous terrorist. Beyond that hurdle, the team itself is in shambles. Most all of the formerly active members are either on disability leave (due to injuries inflicted by Zemo's Masters) or have distanced themselves from the group altogether. With Thor off in Asgard, Captain America missing in action, and Iron Man having long since left the team to further his personal ambitions, there aren't many heroes left willing to risk their very lives by giving the call to Assemble.
But even in the Avengers' darkest hour, there are a few for whom the spirit will never die....
<img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hhawkeye.jpg" align=left alt><img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hdoctorpym.jpg" align=left alt><img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hwasp.jpg" align=left alt><img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hvision.jpg" align=left alt><img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hwanda.jpg" align=left alt><img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hkurt.jpg" align=left alt><img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/columns/headshots/hdarkhawk.jpg" align=left alt><br><br><br><br>
Hawkeye (Chairman)
He's been gone a long, long time... and to be perfectly frank, he doesn't give a damn if the U.S. and U.N. want him dead. He's used to a life on the run, and he'll risk anything to restore to the Avengers the glory they deserve. Hawkeye leads a team in hiding, without Jarvis, quinjets, mansions, or security clearance... and that suits him just fine. Years spent learning tactical leadership from the missing Captain America have served Hawk well, and there's no man better suited to command the last of the Avengers.
Dr. Pym
Everybody thought his second round of identity-swapping was over with his recent adoption of the Yellowjacket name... but they forgot the final phase of the cycle. Dr. Pym, the scientific adventurer, has seen his faith in superheroes destroyed. He's finally admitted to himself that he isn't cut out for the costumed life, preferring instead an identity that allows him to invent and create. Dr. Pym wants to give back to the Avengers for all the times the team helped him... and he stands as one of the most centered and sane mainstays of Hawkeye's new team.
Wasp
Janet Van Dyne watched Moonstone rip Jack of Hearts into very small pieces. She saw her closest friend, the Savage She-Hulk, turn on her teammates. She saw Tony Stark abandon her and she suffered due to the indifference of Thor. In the aftermath of the Avengers' greatest challenge, it is ironically enough Hank Pym that helps her through a period of mental instability. Once she was one of the Avengers' greatest leaders. Now she's simply terrified of what the future holds.
Vision
They tried again.
After the government turned on the Avengers, one of the first things they tried to do was disassemble the Vision... again. And that was something that finally unleashed the depths of an almost unknown emotion in the android: fear. He ran, abandoning the team, and didn't stop running until Hawkeye's call for the new regrouping came months later. He is terrified of what could happen to him if the new Avengers fail... but he is determined to fight for his own future.
Scarlet Witch
Her life has always been defined by the Avengers, and a few new government threats aren't changing that in her mind. She's determined to bring Jan back from the brink, to support Hawkeye, to restore the good name of the Avengers, and to find peace in her personal life. This is made more complicated by the Vision's emotional return; the android has finally admitted to himself that he wants her back. However, Wanda had already begun a strong relationship with one of the team's new recruits....
Nightcrawler
Kurt Wagner watched the fall of the Avengers on TV with his fellow X-Men from the relative safety of Xavier's mansion. The irony of the situation wasn't lost on him as he sat safely within the school and watched the destruction of his old friends. Frustrated by the passive attitude of Xavier and the other X-Men, Kurt set off alone to help the Avengers. He had always been impressed by their nobility and deeds, and he wasn't about to allow the mere fact that most of them weren't mutants stop him from helping. After fighting at the team's side and growing ever closer to the Scarlet Witch, Kurt asked Hawkeye for full membership in the Avengers.
Darkhawk
Desperate to find anybody who would still assemble, Hawkeye sent out a general call on the old Avengers priority frequency to any former members who would be willing to return to the fold. He wasn't surprised by the subsequent return of Wanda or the Vision... but Darkhawk was a shock. The only other ex-Avenger to respond, Darkhawk reclaimed his former spot on the roster. The dark hero keeps mostly to himself, and his motivations are a mystery to everybody.
On the run from a world that really does hate and fear them... the Avengers are a team like never before.

Wonder Man
Beast
She-Hulk
The perfect blend of some of the most likeable characters in the Avengers roster, this team is designed not for maximum power or to beat the biggest bad guys, but to be the most fun to read and watch interact. The Vision remains one of the favorite characters of many Avengers fans for his complex backstory but startlingly simple motivations. His "brother" Wonder Man, and the girl they both love, the Scarlet Witch, are vital additions to this team not for the angst-filled love triangle, but for the wonderful way the three have maintained a common bond of friendship despite their rocky past romances. Around this nucleus we add the Beast, one of the brightest and funniest past Avengers and a perfect foil for his buddy Wonder Man; Hawkeye, a strong personality and one of the most resourceful characters going; She-Hulk, another character that is a perfect mix of brains, brawn and fun (not to mention a classic female foil for the sometimes chauvinistic Hawkeye); and, at the helm, the Black Panther, another character that is brilliant, but one who is mysterious and dark as well. No team of jokers can properly function without a dark, broody leader at the head, and nobody fills those shoes like the Panther.

Photon's Team O' Angst and Coolness

Photon (Chairman)
Always been found of Monica, who is way underused. She’s definitely got the “firepower” to be one of the big guns, and she’s got the leadership skills, so she’s my chairman. Get a writer that’s imaginative enough to really push the limits of what she can do with her powers, and there you go. Oh, and she gets the Captain Marvel name back.
Black Panther
He’s the coolest character in the Marvel Universe, and that fact would only be amped up on this roster. I figure that he’d make sure he was on this group of Avengers in order to make sure they’re “on the right path" since it’d be missing all of the “big dogs”.
Hercules
Every team needs a muscle head. What I like about Hercules is that you can have the god aspect of Thor, but much more wiggle room in dealing with it. Hercules gets to get drunk or act a jerk if the writer’s inclined, Thor doesn’t.
Ant-Man II
Lang’s always been my favorite Ant-Man. How can you not love a guy balancing super-heroics with single fatherhood? Add in the fact that he’s a guy constantly trying to move out of the shadow of the more famous Pym, and you’ve got some good character elements there to work with. Plus, we get the possibility of Jessica Jones popping up from time to time, which is always good.
Citizen V
I like Citizen V, he’s like James Bond but in a super-hero costume. Never been an Avenger before, but the V-Battalion is close enough. I’d imagine that he and Black Panther would develop a rivalry similar to BP and Iron Man’s. That would be fun to watch.
Quicksilver
One of my all-time favorite characters. He’s got the attitude, but also the strong sense of duty. We haven’t really gotten to see him since Magneto died, but it’d be nice to have Pietro not constantly whining about being the son of the world’s most feared and dangerous terrorist.
Crystal
Another personal fave, be fun to see her back in action. Her “on again/off again” marriage with Quicksilver is an obvious playground for the writer to create some conflict on the team.

Why go to Asgard when there's an Eternal who's quite up to the task? Versatility? That's where Scarlet Witch and Sersi come in again, as well as Photon. Various women also provide flight (Wasp, Warbird, Photon and Moondragon) which is always handy, and a good deal of superhuman strength (Warbird and She-Hulk). And let's not forget something that the Avengers usually lack: telepathy. Moondragon provides everything needed on that front, all the while sporting a bald head with much more flair than Professor X ever could. They're all experienced too, which is always handy when fighting the new Big Bad du-jour.
Want something avenged? These girls can avenge with the best of them. There's quite a few tempers here, while Moondragon is just a... well, let's just say it rhymes with itch.
Oh, and ever heard how the menstruation of women who live together start happening around the same time? Let's see Kang stand up to a group of females experiencing mood-swings and stomach cramps.

Captain America's always -the- leader. Bah! The ultimate boy scout, like Superman, has become boring. The -other- well-known Avengers leader, the one that really doesn't get the credit she's due, is Janet Van Dyne. Have her as leader, and you get Giant-Man as supporting cast, easy.
Black Panther
Everyone talks about the Big Three of the Avengers... and frankly, that's boring. Boo. After Christopher Priest put his magic touch on the Black Panther, he's become infinitely more interesting than the bozo who has to carry around a big gun to feel manly (remember his special, Proton Cannon, in the Marvel Superheroes game?). Black Panther puts meaning into the phrase "Walk softly, and carry a big stick."
Hercules
As for Hercules... I've always found Greek/Roman mythology to be much more interesting than Norse. Sure, Thor has that hammer of his, and DC has the Greek side of things covered with Wonder Woman... but that doesn't mean ol' Herc should get shafted. An Avengers fraternity! That'd be interesting.
Black Widow
You've got to have a spy on the team, and while it's true, Black Panther -could- have his government agencies on the job... sometimes, you need an in-house expert to cover the bases. That's where Black Widow comes in... and hey, it doesn't hurt that she's easy on the eyes -- not that it had ANYTHING to do with my choice... really...
Crystal
Black Knight
Soap opera time! You've got the elemental who can control all the elements... and you've got the knight in shining armor. Can't go wrong there. Black Widow and Crystal had an interesting mentor/mentee balance way back when, and having the Black Knight play what King Arthur would be like in modern days... what more could you ask?
Songbird
She was in Avengers Forever as a future Avenger... so why not pull her in now? Some of the best Avengers stories have been former villains trying to redeem and prove themselves.

Captain Marvel III
I wanted a team that actually lived up to the name of Earth's Mightiest.
I am not a big fan of Iron Man, but the A's need his tech/scientific expertise.
Thor is a no-brainer.
Scarlet Witch is the lone magical person.
Sersi and CM III provide a lot of power to this team.
Hawkeye is another leader type, and a great right hand man - he possesses a lot of intangibles.
I wanted another female at least on the team, but there were none that I could really choose to replace the team I have listed. She-Hulk is great in terms of strength and personality, but the others above have strength plus more. Plus one flirt in Sersi is enough for one team (I am going more for the Nicieza-Sersi than the Harras-brooding-Sersi). Wasp is great, but with so many chiefs on the team as it is, another one who can only provide wasp stings was not necessary.
I also wanted a couple of people who would stir stuff up. Sersi and Hawkeye (and maybe CM III) do that. I would have picked Quasar over CM III, but he's kinda bland. Hell, I almost put Hulk on the team. Talk about drama....

Captain America (Chairman)
Cap is the Avengers, plain and simple. He's their leader, he's their rock, he's their heart and soul. Any Avengers team without him just wouldn't feel right.
Iron Man
Tony is not only the team's brains, but their financial backing via the Maria Stark Foundation as well. After all, who do you think pays for all those Mansion rebuilds and new Quinjets?
Archangel
Of all the X-Men that should "crossover" to the Avengers, it's Warren. Combine his financial resources and business savvy with Tony Stark's, and you'd have an Avengers team that has a media power unlike ever before.
Warbird
With her military connections and her wealth of experience, Carol Danvers always proves herself as a major asset to any Avengers line-up.
Falcon
To make sure that the Avengers don't lose touch with the common man, enter the street-wise Falcon. He keeps the team grounded whenever he's on the roster, and helps make sure they never lose sight of just who it is they're fighting for.
She-Hulk
Every high-profile team needs a lawyer, and there's none better than Jennifer Walters. Heck, if she can represent the Juggernaut in court, she can easily serve the legal interests of the Avengers.
Juggernaut
And speaking of Cain, every team needs raw power, and it doesn't come much better than the unstoppable Juggernaut! Besides which, the Avengers have a long history of former villains seeking to redeem themselves, and Cain's certainly been set down that path.
Black Widow
One of the best covert ops agents in the world, Natasha Romanoff would bring her unsurpassed espionage skills to the forefront as the Avengers fight to protect humankind. Combined with the talents of her fellow Avengers, and you'd have a fighting force that's second-to-none!

Hercules
Heavy hitter. Gotta have one of them.

Hawkeye
Scarlet Witch
Vision
Wonder Man
Beast

U.S. Agent (Chairman)
Outlaw
Darkhawk
Songbird
Ricochet
War Machine
When b- and c-characters get killed off, who's left to avenge them? Why, this group of Avengers, of course! U.S. Agent brings in the sense of stern leadership this bunch needs, while Ricochet provides the levity to make it through the darker times. Darkhawk, when coupled with Ricochet, provides the youthful outlook on the superhero-ing side, while War Machine provides the technological muscle. Songbird the reformed villianess spot, and Outlaw's just hot.
Look out, Tieri. They're comin' for you, next!

Wasp
Sersi
Warbird
She-Hulk
Photon
Moondragon
Who needs men anyway? I mean, really. You've got all you need here. There's a capable leader in Scarlet Witch (and Wasp too, actually). Need power?
The world would be a safer place.

Wasp's Retro Squad (plus Songbird)

Wasp (Chairman)

Captain America (Chairman)
Iron Man
Thor
Hawkeye
Sersi
Scarlet Witch
