Well, I supose it depends on your tastes. But if we talk about this lining:
Uncanny: Alan Davis
New: Salvador Larroca
XXM: Cancelled.
I would agree (if only because of the name).
Other possibilities?. Dreaming is free, no?
Well: George Perez, the Epting of his years in Avengers with Harras, Pacheco (yes, I am a fan, and as I said, dreaming is free), Van Sciver, Jimenez...
Not meaning to disturb, but yes, there are some possibilities.
how do you know for a fact that XXM is going to be cancelled?
oh you dont..

I don't, but I don't see any object in maintaining that serie.
Apart from that, If you see, I have put many pencilers as third penciler. I was thinking only about Uncanny, New and XXM (I don't read Ultimate nor do I think it as a core serie and I think its management is apart, so Salvador don't mean to it when speaking of the staff ).

It sells. That is why it would still be out. Pretty basic really.
I didnt think of Ultimate Xmen...but he said he was part of reloaded, or at least alluded to, and i dont think that would really have anything to do with Ultimate.
Wolverines team is due for a change kinda soon right? I know the writer/and or artist went dc right? I would assume they would probably move him there.
I hope XXM though. Want to see some Salvador Psylocke when she comes back

Greg Rucka's last issue as series writer is 18. He is exclusive to DC now. Darrick Robertson, series artist, has indicated he would like to continue with the next writer. Issue 18 isn't out for months after Reload, so no Sal on that. Issue 13 comes out during Reload month if I remember correctly.
I want Sal back on X-Treme. Igor is doing a respectable job, but its just not the same when you have had 24 amazing issues by Sal in a row(plus an annual...albiet a sideways 'widescreen' annual. I didn't like that format...)! As for Sal being the worst artist on the Reload titles? Bah, don't belive you! Alan Davis is the only one confirmed, and whilst he is fantastic and has so much experience and he is a huge name...you're as good, if not better. Different styles, both excellent.

Y'know, personally I'd like to see X-treme go away. I've never liked having 3 core books, and that's why I never bothered to buy the title regularly anyway. And now that Claremont is on Uncanny (the original title), why do we need X-treme? All we have to do is move the X-treme characters back over to the Uncanny team and all is right with the world. Personally, I'd love to see an Uncanny team made up of Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Nightcrawler, Archangel, Sage, Jubilee, and Northstar. But I digress...
As far as Sal is concerned, I think he would be a perfect fit for Ultimate X-men. In fact, he should've been the artist on the book from the beginning IMO. He did, after all, design most of the Ultimate X-men costumes. And the guy never needs a fill-in. He's also capable of doing 18 issues a year like Bagley over on Ultimate Spider-man. So IMO they ought to put Sal on Ultimate X-men and move Finch over to the regular Marvel U as the fill-in for Cassaday and Davis ('cause you know they'll both need fill-ins at some point). Larocca is too fast to be a fill-in, but Finch isn't. He could be working on the 2nd NXM arc while Cassaday is working on the first. Then he could also fill-in when Davis needs a break (though I think Davis is a little faster than Cassaday, so he probably won't need as much help). That would be the best of all situations as far as I'm concerned.
Uncanny: CC and Davis
New: Whedon and Cassaday (w/ Finch alternating arcs)
Ultimate: Mack and Larocca

I thought so perhaps. I wasn’t quite sure.
Well that would make me think they would want to keep him on the title. Someone who actually wants to be a regular artist is probably something Marvel wants to keep I think.
With 18 not being out till after, and those issues being written before hand, we can now assume that Wolverine is out of the Reloaded picture.
Although there is a rumored Nightcrawler book in the works...i don’t know if the character can really float his own title. Perhaps Excalibur redux?
I want Sal back on X-Treme. Igor is doing a respectable job, but its just not the same when you have had 24 amazing issues by Sal in a row(plus an annual...albiet a sideways 'widescreen' annual. I didn't like that format...)! As for Sal being the worst artist on the Reload titles? Bah, don't belive you! True ‘dat. Wasn’t a fan of the widescreen thing either...as I take it most fans weren't either. Hence we do not see them anymore.
I'm fairly positive on Whedon/Cassady for new, although the mamet part seems far fetched. And I doubt they would take him out of the X-books since he is not only one of the best artist ever, he actually wants to stay on the books. Igor have a contract coming up? Or was he ever an exclusive? I doubt they would take him off the book, but he may have chosen to look for greener pastures. Especially if he ever had any editoral stuff that seems to plague CC.
Y'know, personally I'd like to see X-treme go away. I've never liked having 3 core books, and that's why I never bothered to buy the title regularly anyway. I wouldn’t. XXM serves a purpose and is relevant. I would think it would be better to let some of the satellites go. Your Emma Frost or Mystques. It’s really different from the two cores, and has a clear message/purpose, other than telling stories involving the characters.
I wouldn’t like him on Ultimate... He wouldn’t be able to flex his creative muscles much there.
Amen to that. Never bought it. Shall have to do to have Ultimate War (in Spain it will be published as part of Ultimate X Men. We are about a year later than US edition
This actually boils down to one reason I wouldn’t want Sal there. Its just retelling old stories. I never got the ultimate universe. All they do is tell the same stories as the regular. It seems they have a cool new universe and they fall into the pittrappings of old stories. I would rather Sal help create new interesting characters, like Vargas, than just draw the same ole same ole that comes with Ultimate.

I would just like to remind folks that this isn't a general discussion forum for the X-Men. This is Salva's forum for you to interact with him and vice versa. Any general X-Men discussion or speculation on who should be on which title, etc. needs to be taken to the Xavier Institute (http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=6) where it belongs.

Salvador said he's the worst of the reload team, meaning he's involved, meaning he's doing one of the core books. So if that's true and Alan Davis is doing Uncanny X-Men, and John Cassady is doing New X-Men. Then that means the only core book left for Salvador to do is X-Treme X-Men. Just some food for thought.

Anyway, I remember that Larroca to Uncanny was announced 7 months ago. If we supose that Davis works with the same time, it means we have still almost 6 months of Salvador. And I am sure he shall be drawing his new job.
By the way, I have read that Whedon anouncement can't be done before he finishes with his TV contract. It would mean he and Cassaday can't go on NXM in many months time.

I can´t imagina Larroca as the worst penciller of the reload, they should be big guns, such as Andy Kubert or Jim Lee, Alan Davis is a Master but they have similar quality, especially seing Larroca's last jobs. My only wish is that Marvel keeps him in a collection for a while.
A question for Salva, is there any new on the Namor film?

So does this X-men: Reloaded thing start in January? Can't wait for the shake ups. Acutally it seems that January and Mrach are gonna be big months for comics in general.
The only guys that could come close to touching a candle to Sal would be Jim Lee, and Micheal Turner. But since that might not happen anytime soon. Who could it be? :?

Apparently the entire X-Verse will be a part of the "Reload". Nunzio DeFilippis confirmed in this post (http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/showthread.php?threadid=24686) that New Mutants # 13 will be part of the event.

Well the Emma book's 2nd story arc is Jan to June, at least as originally laid out. That, added to the fact that it's still presently taking place in a time about a decade prior to current continuity, I doubt it'll be part of this.
Also, Carlo Pagulayan just started his run as regular penciller on Emma (with Jan's issue).
Just my Emma-centric contribution to this topic ;)
BTW, I think Sal was more likely referring to a core X-title. Tom Derenick's comments over on the rumor thread (news forum) makes it sound like the Whedon/Cassaday layout, even if true, would not be for the long run (well he was more cryptic about it but that's what I extrapolated from it for now :) ) so Sal might still be the new regular penciller...
Either way, good luck, Sal. I look forward to anything you're drawing :)

Well Wolverine’s creative team isn’t changing, and this “event” seems kinda new, so I would speculate it isn’t factored in to the stuff already done before he went DC exclusive.
Mystique could possibly. Although I doubt it.
Emma Frost is a flash back book
X-statix.. I doubt they would touch
Exiles isn’t connected to the marvel universe proper, I'm I believe the reloading will happen as an event calls for it.
Since Sal can make deadlines, I would expect them to keep him on a major X-title. It only makes sense. With satellite books it doesn’t matter so much.
Apparently the entire X-Verse will be a part of the "Reload". Nunzio DeFilippis confirmed in this post that New Mutants # 13 will be part of the event.
Actually that is one book I didn’t think of that certainly would feel the shakeup. Although not wanting to degrade the work on that, so if this comes off harshly than apologies, but considering marvel’s (usual) policies for the best artist for the best book, I don’t know if they would put him on something of that stature. When I say best I'm saying financially speaking mind you, I happen to enjoy that title. Also, doesn’t it only come out once a month? Can’t really utilize his speed there.
Although to be honest, whatever Sal draws will kick ass, and i will certainly buy it regardless. I got some namor dammit!

over at another site, it's been rumoured that whedon is indeed taking over NEW but only after 12 months from morisson's departure. during which time, it was said that Salva will be the interim artist for new x-men along with the interim writers. if this is true, then Salva will be doing 12 issues of NEW.
Any comment on this Salva? And if this is indeed true, then where do you go after the 12 issues of NEW X-MEN?

And let's go on with the Q&A...:
-What happened to the initial Vargas sketch, the one with the armour, the swords and the lion insignia... Was it going to be used? I loved that design , it was very medieval
- About Sage/Tessa... Was the new look completely yours? Where the tattoos your idea later developed in Schism (and hopefully in Prisioners of Fire) or Mr Claremont's?
- Do you base your characters in real life peope? Could you hint any (besides Pamela anderson :p ), Is Wolverine based in a young Clint Eastwood?
- How do you work with Mr Claremont's (Mr. Austen's right now) English scripts, are they translated to you? You seem to defend pretty well in English.
Y eso es todo por hoy! :) Feliz año 2004 (Más vale tarde que nunca)

Hey Sal, great work on Uncanny. The inking and UDON colouring makes it look so completely different, but I really like it. Hey Sal -
Excellent work on your first issue of Uncanny! The whole issue was a visual feast! Of course this only makes me want to see your renditions of Alpha Flight even more. Is there any chance that you'll be drawing them in some book sometime in the near future? If you were to choose one character from Alpha Flight that you like the most, who would it be?

Hi people!
Happy new year to all of you!
let's go with some answers!
Hi Wildbull
-What happened to the initial Vargas sketch, the one with the armour, the swords and the lion insignia... Was it going to be used? I loved that design , it was very medieval
It wasn't used after all,we prefered a more modern costume, more in the line of inmortals, but to me,it could be very usefull,(of course if I have the chance to draw him again)
- About Sage/Tessa... Was the new look completely yours? Where the tattoos your idea later developed in Schism (and hopefully in Prisioners of Fire) or Mr Claremont's?
Yes,the looks was mi idea, but the origin of the tattoos is from Chris.
- Do you base your characters in real life peope? Could you hint any (besides Pamela anderson ), Is Wolverine based in a young Clint Eastwood?
Yes again,I use to think in real persons. But not always.for example,in issue 24(xtreme) the sarge was in mi mind Sean Connery, and you're right with Wolwerine.
- How do you work with Mr Claremont's (Mr. Austen's right now) English scripts, are they translated to you? You seem to defend pretty well in English.
Yes,engish scripts since lot sof years ago,I only used translations on my first year in marvel, when I was a rookie!
I Magic the Darkchild.
-How come you're X-treme, Namor, Uncanny work look so differently? Experimentation?
Yes,I think that I need evolve to a better artist,or at least triying to keep me in the wawe.
Anyway, drawing always in the same way is boring.
I also try to fit the style to the book or to the history, for example,Namor was for young girls,so I decided doing a very open and minimalist style, easy to follow.
It also depends of the creative team, with udon,I can do things that I can't do wit other colorists, same for liquid..
Thanks to all of you for the nice words about the Uncanny issue,I was very worried that people wouldn't undertand the change in the style, but danny and udon are too good, and I feel happy about how it looks,I only sorry because they used the wrong cover,in fact the printed cover is a early version without any revision and it was redone for 3 times in colors, now that have been lost...
By the way,I'm very interested in objetive opinions about the art, what would like that I keep or what would you love to change...
Thanks!
Salvador

Jan 13, 2004, 11:56 am
well I wouldn't change anything, Sal. You just breath new life into the characters with every page and how you evolve once you get to draw the characters over a longer period of time.
wsas that a hint about you getting to draw vargas again? ;)
Sal, keep up the good work and I hope see you stay on the x-books for the forseeable future.
and if you had a chance to do any other comic, which will you choose and why?

I can only speak about your job in X-Treme and it is a great step from your uncanny issues, some action scenes are a bit confused but overall your name is a warranty. Another detail is that I think that your art improves with an inker, and Danny Miki is one of the best. So keep working like this.
PD Isn't funny that two of the best authors working for Marvel are so modest? ( John Romita Jr. and Salvador Larroca)

Even when you draw in different styles, there's still a very distinct "Salvador Larroca look" to it. I mean that as a good thing, of course.
I'm also looking forward to anything you'll bring to the table, but I can't deny that I'm hoping for more of your Emma somewhere down the line :D

first of all, congratulations for a job well done. your stint in xtreme are probably the best i have for almost 10 years now. your strokes are simply flawless. though i regret u leaving the book, i must say, im excited to see how you would render other xmen characters such as angel, crawler and other xmen.
i must say, your angel and husk and beautiful!
so are you going back to extreme in the near future? not that i have gripes with igor's art (i got used to it), but seeing you back there will truly usher the golden age for marvel! hahaha!
i hope you'll be brought back to xtreme. :)

I think I prefer your art inked, Sal. The run on X-Treme was fantastic, but I do feel that sometimes the lines were hmm undermined by the colours? Liquid is really bright see, and there could have ben more clarity to the work if the lines were emphasised by inks?

I'd say it works both ways. There was a certain aesthetic to the look of Liquid's colors + Sal's pencils, but as you've pointed out, there's also a nice contrast added by the inked work. Just my opinion.

I'd love to give you my opinion about the new Uncanny issue, but you know how International shippings use to delay here (Spain , I mean) and given the Xmas holidays I haven't read yet the two issue before yours, so I suppose I'll have it about next week (really looking forward to reading it) then.... comments galore ;)
Oh, and Polaris, Havok, Angel and Iceman are some of my fave characters so I think I'll enjoy it very much...
And now the spanish line:

Hi, Sal! :)
There's really not much about your art that needs changing, in my opinion. Your pencils are absolutely gorgeous!
As far as inks go, I preferred the inkless style you had with Liquid in X-treme. It's the first time I can remember seeing anything like that, and it remains my favorite art to this day. Something about not having the black lines of inking combined with the vibrant colors gave the pages a 3D quality. It even got my boyfriend to start collecting X-treme, and he'd only picked up random issues of various X-titles before that. ;)
On the colors, do you think you can get UDON to brighten them up a little? They seem a bit washed out.
I'll go back to lurking now! :D

I agee. I loved the inkless, and I do think UDON's stuff right now is a little... watercolored, but it does work.
Sal, I was wondering who inks the X-Treme covers? I really really love how they look.

Sal have you ever tried your hand at writing? or are you happy to stick to drawing? i read somewhere that you would be happy to continue drawing x titles for a long time, but i cant help but wonder whether you'd like to try your hand at writing and pencilling your own cast of characters in your own universe? (like joe madureiras "battle chasers"?)
Your archangel is magnificent, and like nate, i would love to see your emma frost again.....and also Rictor from X-corp...but thats not likely!

Hello,
Well, I don't want to be the 'damp squib' of the group, but, you did ask about other opinions, so, here I go:-
I would really like it if you could tone down the chests of the female characters. It's just that , they're a bit big, you know?
Other than that, I have to say that I absolutely ADORE your Gambit! Do you have any particular actor in mind when you draw him?
Also, will there ever be a Gambit/Rogue kissing cover on XXM (by you, of course) ?
Thanks for your time,
threaza :)

I have to disagree with the thing about female chests. They don't look that out of place to me, but that's just my opinion. I mean, I've seen worse.
Just out of curiosity, do you have a favorite X-villain, Sal? Perhaps one you haven't gotten to illustrate?
Thanks :)

Dialogue could be a problem for him though, if it's an English-language script. Nuances for characterization and separate voices are difficult enough for many native speakers to write consistently, it'd be a very difficult task unless someone else were to help out with the dialogue. Plotting should be fine I guess.

Heh. It's almost ironic that this post came after one mentioning Battlechasers by Joe Mad because I can just about remember one of the female characters from the series having a chest approximately the same size as her entire upper body. Heh.

Hmm the April Soliciations will be here soon. I wanna see what Sal is drawing! The letters page in the latest Uncanny seemed to indicate you were onbaord for the long-run, but the Claremont/Davis team was made official. Surely they wouldn't lie about that...Nah. Fingers crossed it's X-Treme! ...and that you give the characters colourful costumes! :D

Sal I haven't posted on your board yet so I just wanted to say how truly amazing I think that your art is. When you were pulled from Xtreme Xmen I almost stopped reading it, but thankfully Chris remained and I love his work as well. I'm so happy now that you are on Uncanny because it has some of my favorite X characters like Havok, Polaris, and Iceman and it'll be great to see how you draw them. I know that you mentioned that you will not be changing any costumes, but could you please do something about Angel's current costume?? It is horrible, it looks kind of like a cross between a gladiator outift and a giant diaper. Anything would be better.
Back in the early nineties when Jim Lee's art was so popular on X-men marvel had him do a card series of the entire x-men universe. If I remember correctly it sold like hotcakes, and I still have a complete set that I flip through on occasion. If Marvel gave you the ok would you ever consider doing something like that?? I know that other then myself many others would love to see your take on all the characters of the X-men universe, such as Richtor, Dazzler, M, Sunspot, and Magick just to name a few. Sure it might never happen, but it sounds like a great idea to me,and would definitely sell very well.
Anyways keep up the great work, you never stop amazing me.

Even though I'm not an artist myself and don't know anything about the technical aspects of art -- mostly I just know what I like and what I don't like -- I think it's fascinating to see how different pencillers and inkers mesh and how different a penciller's work can turn out depending on who's inking it.
I think your work is especially interesting in this respect because you're one of the very few artists whose pencils we've seen colored and printed without being inked (as in your X-Treme run). That gives us a very good point of comparison.
I personally love your un-inked work best. There's a delicacy and a softness (which I mean in a good way) that really appeals to me. Maybe it's the combination of your uninked pencils and Liquid!'s colors, but I really think your work on X-Treme is some of the very, very best art I've ever seen in 20+ years of reading comics.
When your work is inked, there sometimes seems to be a heaviness that doesn't appeal to me as much. Maybe it's because we've been spoiled by seeing your uninked work for so long! I'm not crazy about Miki's inks over your pencils, but we've only had 1 issue to get used to it. Don't get me wrong, I still love your art, but definitely prefer it uninked. I feel the same way about the X-Treme annual inked by Sandu Florea.
Finally: I was just re-reading the Kitty Pryde story you did with Chris Claremont in X-Men Unlimited #36 and it's just fantastic. I think you draw the best Kitty since Paul Smith/Bob Wiacek 20 years ago! I especially love the 2nd page of that story, with the wonderful homages to classic Kitty scenes from Uncanny #129 and #139. Beautiful! This Kitty fan thanks you for that page! I hope we'll get to see you drawing Kitty (and Lockheed) again soon ... and not just on the AMAZING cover to XXM #44.

Dear Mr. Larroca:
I am currently writing Amalgam Universe profiles for the "Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe" (http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/ ). The profiles are going to be the most comprehensive guide to the Amalgam Universe that the web has to offer (and an attempt to rectify all of the little inconstancies along the way). I want to make sure that my information and speculations are accurate, however. I really enjoyed your work on SPEED DEMON #1 and it would be much appreciated if you could peruse through the following list (which includes all the amalgamations mentioned in SPEED DEMON) and point out anything that seems incorrect to you:
Arrowcaster [Speedy (Roy Harper) / ----??]
Blob [Chunk (Chester P. Runk) / Blob (Fred J. Dukes)]
Crime Alley [Crime Alley / ----]
Father Hellstrom [---- / Daimon Hellstrom (Son of Satan)]
Green Goblin (Harvey Osborn) [Two-Face (Harvey Dent) / Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)]
Guardians [Guardians of the Universe / Watchers]
Hal Jordan [Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) / ----]
Iris Simpson [Iris Allen / Roxanne Simpson]
Jay Garrick [Jay Garrick (Flash) / ----]
Kid Demon (Speed Demon II) (Wally West) [Kid Flash (Wally West) / Ghost Rider (Dan Ketch)]
Merlin [Merlin / Merlin]
Miss Miracle [Mister Miracle (Scott Free) / Crystal (Crystal Amaquelin Maximoff)]
Night Spectre [Spectre (Jim Corrigan) / Nightmare]
Puck [Oberon / Puck (Eugene Milton Judd), Wolf]
Quentin Carnival [---- / Quentin Carnival]
Scarecrow [Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane) / Scarecrow (Ebenezer Laughton)]
Siliconman [Plastic Man (Eel O'Brian) / Sandman (William Baker)]
Sinestro [Sinestro / ----]
Speed Demon I (Blaze Allen) [Flash (Barry Allen), Etrigan the Demon / Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze)]
Starbrand Corps [Green Lantern Corps / Starbrand]
Terrible Three [Terrible Trio / Sinister Six]
Uatu the Guardian [Guardians of the Universe / Uatu the Watcher]
Also, at the wedding of Blaze and Iris (page 6), am I correct in assuming the unnamed cameos in attendance are the Ringmaster, the Clown, and the Flying Gambonnos from Marvel's Circus of Crime? Were they intended to have any DC component part or were they just pure Marvel?
Finally, Night Spectre's Souls of Power (page 7): Am I correct in labeling them as Mr. Sinister, Super-Skrull, Valor, the Leader, and Jay Garrick? Were these characters intended to be amalgamated or were they just taken "as is" from their respective universes?
I realize that the Amalgam gimmick was only intended to be a one shot deal and a lot of the writers and artists didn't really plan things out beyond their individual one-shots, but any information or insights you could provide would be very helpful. (I already contacted Kurt Busiek, Ron Marz, Chuck Dixon, and John Ostrander and they were extremely helpful!)
By the way, the Amalgam profiles I completed thus far can be found at http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/amalgamd.htm in case you're interested.
Thanks for your time, Mr. Larroca! I look forward to enjoying more of your X-Men art!

I dont mind the chest. Threaza and i had a discussion on this in the XXM thread once.
i think its just standard practice to make for superheroes to look exaggerated (male and female)
but any who.
Bit of a question. In the recent issue 437 Jeb is laid up in bed, with a bandage (i think it's jeb, i cant keep the names straight). So was that in the script or your own touch (the bandage)? Seems to me if he was healed he wouldnt have needed it.
Thanks

Sal,
Just out of curiosity, what do you think of Ethan Van Sciver, Phil Jiminez, Sean Chen, Tom Derenick, and Marc Silvestri? (I mean their art style, no need to go into anything personal :) )
I'm just wondering because I consider at least a couple of the above to be very opposite your style, but I'm both a fan of yours and theirs. I'd like to get your perspective on their styles since they've also done a lot of X-titles in recent years.

Salvador,
It is so nice to see you drawing the X-Men again...still the only comics I read! I am buying Uncanny for you and you alone, altho I will admit that I am enjoying the story well enough this time. I like your version of the Guthries, it makes me want to see more of them in action.
-Josh looks beautiful...I am curious if the auburn wings were your idea or Austen's. It gives the character a nice distinction from Warren.
-You also do a great job on the costumes I didn't think much of when they debuted. You have put the LaRocca touch on them and made them look more like traditional hero uniforms and less like disco outfits!
-I can't wait to here what the Powers That Be have lined up for you in the future. Your work is so clean and stylish, the is never a weak panel from start to finish. Since you asked for criticism, I will say that [like a number of people who post on this site] I would like to see some more variety in the nose department! You draw a perfect nose but many people are beautiful with very different shapes and sizes of noses and I think it would further distinguish one character from another. I mean that respectfully and in all honestly...it's the one thing I might work on, if I had already achieved the incredible style you have developed.
-I have a couple of older Uncanny's [or X-men's Not sure!] that you drew and I can see how you art has grown more daring and more precise over time, with truly jaw-dropping sequences and two-page spreads. Keep up the fine work!
-Please give in and tell us what you are drawing and when! Your fans must know! Just whisper it...
Thanks again for making comic-reading joyful with this new story!

Salvador, I have fnally read the issue!
I must say that this is a complete style change, much closer to your job in Ultimate DD than XXM, I love how your style combine with UDON's colors, they create a stylish and smooth atmosphere of textures.
I have realized that you are using more cartoony elements , like the portrayla of the kids and the guy from the beginning, and that you have that comprehension of places and architecture like in the splash where we can see the house exploding as well as the streets and the other houses.
I really liked your portrayal of Jubes and Paige, but I only complain about your rendition of Angel, he seems very boyish IMHO and he should look ominous and powerful, I think Josh looks like how Warren should be.
... Looking forward to seeing Polaris

Helly, Mr Larocca, this is my first post, and I just like to first say, Love your art. When you left Xtreme Xmen, the change in styles was so drastic, I just had to take a break from the title. And your cover on Uncanny Xmen 437 single-handedly made me pick it up. wow, that's a beaut.
'cept Juggernaut. I never liked juggie, and him being on an x-team just seems WRONG to me. But that's just personal opinion.
Anyways, I've followed your stuff on Uncanny X-men (it was uncanny first, right? I can never remember), to Xtreme, and now back to uncanny, and It's kinda amazing how much you've changed, yet still stayed distinctive. I notice that your older work was a lot mroe stylised, a lot less smooth, with more jagged edges, and I believe shadows as well. Now, you've gotten a much smoother, thin-line approach, looks a lot less cartoony. This style change seems to follow the general "comic flow" , as it gets away from the manga-like, cartoony influence of the late 90s. I was wondering, was this a natural evolution (You just let your hand take you there), or was it a conscious change,(where you noticed the trends, or decided to do something different, or some other reason)?
Also, some notes on your faces. Is it just me, or do your women all kind of change face shapes from front to side? I don't know, I'm not a very good artist, but it seems that straight on, or slightly to the side, the women you draw sometimes have longer, smaller noses, sometimes with what seems like straight bridges, to sharp pointy noses, whereas, once you see them from the side view, they all look the same, same eye tilt, and same nose, that swoops down, with a round, button nose-look? Maybe I'm just remembering wrong, as I don't have my collection with me at the moment, but that's alway bugged me a bit. Also, the fact that Psylocke didn't look Japanese. Or asian at least.
I guess, it all comes down to this: One of my fav characters, Jubilee, is chinese. And chinese people generally look very different than your standard "woman" look, so I was wondering if you are going to make her a little different? :D We had a far off look of Jubes in 437, but I notice your close ups often depict the character a bit different than your far-shots.
Well, that got a bit complicated, but basically, what I'm asking is 2 things
1) How did you happen upon this style? I know it changed, and that keeps you interested, but did you CHOOSE your current style, after experimenting a lot, or was it a natural progression. and
2) Is it just me or do your women have different noses from front view to side view, and all have the same nose from side view? And will Jubilee have a different look, and look maybe asian? (At least not the same as the people of other race)
oh, and 3) in Uncanny 437 page 14, the bottom, where paige is looking at warren, and there is ahand there, brushing her hair from her ear, is that Warren's hand, or Paiges? Cause the thumb placement makes me think it's warren, but the fingers seem a bit dainty for manly-man Angel's hand. So maybe it is Paige, reaching her other hand over, but then the tilt of her head seems a bit off for me, ao I was wondering which is it? Cause the difference means a lot in terms of warren and paige's relationship.
Okay, sorry, if I got carried away, lots of questions, love your work, always wanted to know the answers, and I'm definately sticking to this arc, as long as you are ;)

Hi people!
I use to writte in caps, except in this forum, but in order to make differences between questions and answers,I'm going to keep my writting in caps.
HI CAPTAIN AMERICA:
I DON'T THINK THAT I COULD COME BACK TO UNINKED ART,NOT,IS TIME TO CHANGE,I THINK.
NOW I'M WORKING ON X BOOKS WITH LOTS OF INKED ISSUES BEFORE ME,SO I MUST KEEP DOING IN THAT WAY,I THINK THAT IT FITS TO THE BOOK.
HI AHAB26:
Is there any chance that you'll be drawing them(ALPHA FLIGHT) in some book sometime in the near future? If you were to choose one character from Alpha Flight that you like the most, who would it be?
SORRY NOT AT THIS POINT,BUT I LOVE THE CHARACTERS,SPECIALLY GUARDIAN (BEFORE VINDICATOR).
HI ALEX GUILLEM:
and if you had a chance to do any other comic, which will you choose and why?
I WOULD LOVE DRAWING ALONG MY FUTURE CARREER ALL THE MARVEL CHARACTERS,BUT I MUST TO SAY THAT SPIDERMAN APART OF THE X-MEN IS MY FAVOURITE.
HI NATE YOSHIDA:
YES,YOU'LL SE ENMA SOON.
HOLA WILDBULL:
PS: Has probado a ponerle a algún personaje la camiseta del toro de Osborne? Sería bastante curios que alguno la llevase, a mi me hacen mucha gracia esas camisetas.
GOOD IDEA,I'LL KEEP IN MIND FOR DOING IT IN FUTURE:)
I really liked your portrayal of Jubes and Paige, but I only complain about your rendition of Angel, he seems very boyish IMHO and he should look ominous and powerful, I think Josh looks like how Warren should be.
I THINK THAT ANGEL LOOKS LIKE HE SHOULD,HE FEELS VERY DEPRESSED,AND I TRIED TO SHOW THAT IN HIS BODY LANGUAJE,IN CONTRAST TO JOSH WHO IS EXHULTANT IN LOVE..YOU'LL UNDERSTAND IN FUTURE ISSUES.
HI ICEY:
THE COVER FROM XTREME,NAMOR AND UNCANNY ARE UNINKED,JUST PENCILS AND COLORS.
HI RICTOR 79:
Sal have you ever tried your hand at writing? or are you happy to stick to drawing? i read somewhere that you would be happy to continue drawing x titles for a long time, but i cant help but wonder whether you'd like to try your hand at writing and pencilling your own cast of characters in your own universe? (like joe madureiras "battle chasers"?)
CURRENTLY,I'M NOT INTERESTED ON HAND AT WRITTING,OR DOING MY OWN CHARACTERS,I'M NOT SO GOOD OR FAMOUS LIKE MADUREIRA!!;)
I PREFER KEEP DRAWING MARVEL CHARACTERS,SPECIALLY THE X-MEN FOR A LONG TIME.
HI THREAZA:
I would really like it if you could tone down the chests of the female characters. It's just that , they're a bit big, you know?
WELL,I THINK THAT IS A MATTER OF TASTE,I LIKE DRAWING MALE CHARACTERS STRONG AND MUSCLED,AND FEMALE CHARACTERS TALL,THIN WAIST AND BIG BREASTS(PLAYBOY GIRLS),BUT FOR EXAMPLE,YOU'LL NOTICE THAT I DRAW AN ALSMOST FLAT CHESTED KITTY,BECAUSE SHE HAVE BEEN STABLISHED YEARS AGO IN THIS WAY,IN NAMOR THE TEENS HAVE SMALL BREASTS,ONLY JEAN,SAGE,STORM ETC...CHARACTERS ARE DRAW WITH BIG BREAST BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN STABLISHED PREVIOUSLY.
Other than that, I have to say that I absolutely ADORE your Gambit! Do you have any particular actor in mind when you draw him?
TO ME HE'S LIKE TOM CRUISE WITH LONG HAIR
Also, will there ever be a Gambit/Rogue kissing cover on XXM (by you, of course) ?
NOT AT THIS POINT,SORRY
HI XTREMEROGUE:
Just out of curiosity, do you have a favorite X-villain, Sal? Perhaps one you haven't gotten to illustrate?
MAGNETO AND VARGAS,BUT SPECIALLY MAGNETO.
HI ZONA75:
NO PLANS FOR ANY CARD SET,IT'S THE KIND OF STUFF WHERE I HAVEN'T ANYTHING TO SAY,THEY ASK ME FOR IT OR NOT,BUT I CAN'T SAY I WANT TO DRAW A SET CARD LIKE JIM LEE DID...
WOULD BE NICE,BUT NOT SPECIALLY INTERESTED.I'M TOO BUSY WITH REGULAR BOOKS.
HI SKULLOGEIST:
SORRY,BUT I CAN'T HELP YOU,I DON'T REMEMBER DETAILS OF THAT BOOK,IT WAS DONE LOTS OF YEARS AGO,AND EVEN I'M NOT SURE IF I HAVE ANY COPY OF IT.
HI AGAIN NATE YOSHIDA:
Just out of curiosity, what do you think of Ethan Van Sciver, Phil Jiminez, Sean Chen, Tom Derenick, and Marc Silvestri? (I mean their art style, no need to go into anything personal
I LOVE PHIL GIMENEZ AND SILVETRY STUFF TOO,THE OTHER ARTISTS ARE VERY GOOD ARTISTS BUT NOT BETWEEN MY FAVOURITES.DON'T MISSUNDERSTAND MY WORDS,THEY'RE EXCELLENT PROFFESIONALS UNDER MY POINT OF WIEW.
HI AYLW:
1) How did you happen upon this style? I know it changed, and that keeps you interested, but did you CHOOSE your current style, after experimenting a lot, or was it a natural progression. and
YES,IT IS INTENTIONAL,BUT AFTER EXPERIMENTING IT PREVIOUSLY.ULT DD AND ELEKTRA WAS THE EXPERIMENT TO THE CURRENT UNCANNY X-MEN STYLE.
2) Is it just me or do your women have different noses from front view to side view, and all have the same nose from side view? And will Jubilee have a different look, and look maybe asian? (At least not the same as the people of other race)
SORRY,I HAVE LIMITS AS ARTIST!! :)
I'M ALREADY TRYING TO SOLVE THIS,ANT LEAST I'M TRYING THAT BLACK PEOPLE LOOKS LIKE THAT..AS FOR JUBILEE,SORRY BUT ALONG THE ISSUES DONE,THAT SHOT ON THE FIRST ISSUE IS THE ONLY TIME THAT I HAD THE CHANCE TO DRAW HER.
oh, and 3) in Uncanny 437 page 14, the bottom, where paige is looking at warren, and there is ahand there, brushing her hair from her ear, is that Warren's hand, or Paiges? im glad that you want to draw the x-men for a long time. we're extremely lucky to have you. your fantastic pencils and your contribution to this website are very much appreciated. personally, i hope you never go back to drawing the xtreme team. the uncanny/new casts are far more interesting and your archangel/emma frost are superb. the sight of a rather sinister looking lorna lurking behind havok on the cover of 437 is a personal favourite.
no questions. just congratulations.

i really liked your rendition of the "uncanny" cast on the cover of 437. i really like your polaris and to me she stands out more than the rest, maybe it the green hair. to me she stands out cause she looks deliciously evil hanging onto alex. i do hope you get to draw more of polaris since she is perhaps one of my favorite x women. my favorite naturally is psylocke. i always thought she looked great under your pencil.
i do have a question though will there be a sequel to the x-women lithograph featuring the rest of the x women or is that all thats planned?
well i hope all keeps going well for you,
sinestro

HI SINESTRO.
WELL,IF YOU WANT A SEQUEL OF THE X-WOMEN LITHOGRAPH,YOU SHOULD ASK TO DYNAMIC FORCES,THEY HIRED ME FOR THAT THE FIRST TIME,BUT I THINK THEY'RE PLANNING MORE X STUFF FOR ME,EVEN THAT I'M NOT SURE IF THEY WANT MORE GIRLS AT THIS POINT :)
THANKS!

I just want to thank you for making 1 exception to the "X-women" theme for that lithograph and putting Lockheed on it!!!
Was it your idea to include him, or did they request it when they asked you to draw it? Either way, you draw an awesome Lockheed.

I've always seen your art as somewhat of a modernized homage to the eras past, in some ways (for example, moderately colorful costumes yet "toned down" enough for present day sensibilities). Your preferences in drawing your male and female characters this way fits perfectly with this approach, imo.
Besides, as Morrison wrote in New X-Men, these are "the good-looking mutants". They're like the celebrities of mutant culture in the post-Morrison era. They should be idealized :)

This is actually something I've noticed too, but it doesn't bother me all that much.
Having spent 2 years at the University of Calgary's art department, I've seen much worse when it comes to people's artistic limits ;)

THANKS!
SALVADOR
Dear Salvador,
I do understand where you're coming from, but, Rogue (I asked the 'chest question' because of her essentially) has been established with normal-sized breasts. She's not too big and she's not small (like, you mentioned, Kittty is) but normal. Well, except for Joe Mad's Rogue, but, as mentioned above by another poster, he's somewhat famous for his large breasted portrayals of women.
In any event, I would like to thank you for being the professional that you are and replying in the same tone with which I had asked the question. As is obvious from the replies after my question was posted, I'm in the minority with some of my views (or rather, I'm in the minority when it comes to voicing semi-popular views). I want to thank you for answering even though my question was along the lines of criticism. Although, I do hope you know that it was CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and not meant as destructive criticism. :)
Too bad there'll be no Gambit/Rogue kissing cover. Thanks for the reply on Gambit/Tom Cruise.
Is there any particular actress you 'see' Rogue as , when you draw her?
Thanks for your time,
Threaza

Estaré atento en los próximos números entonces...
Yep, I have realized that sad "something" within Warren, while Josh seemed to more relaxed... So Paige is not the cause of Warren's sadness.... :chin: Well, as this is story related I'll just wait and see for future issues.
Sorry If I used the verb should, it's just my p.o.v. on the character.

It would make sense... but post-Reload's Uncanny would almost be like drawing X-Treme again, since I'm assuming Chris will want a lot of his favorites moved over there (while Kurt and a few of the current Uncanny members are likely to end up in Excalibur).
Sal said he wouldn't be saying much more about this till it's officially announced though. I think it just makes sense at this point to leave him on Uncanny while Davis pencils Excalibur, but I'm sure none of the casts will remain the same past it all so it's almost like penciling a different title from a character standpoint :)

dunno if u fellow sal fans have heard/seen, but i've just found out that mr larroca's work will be in Street Fighter #7 (new Devil Due prinitng) as a cover and back-up story~~~!!!
i can't provide a link but its one of the "i'm-not-supposed-to-talk-about" sites.
from what i can see, its possibly the first cover done by back-up artist which looks better then the one done by UDON (joe mad aside).
got a question, what will ur back-up story be about and how long will it b?? its a double length issue so i hope we get a double length back-up
keep up the gd work,

Dear Sal, I love your art in Uncanny (even if I'm not entirely happy with the story, it's worth reading just for your art alone!) your art is gorgeous and detailed (the characters, the backgrounds, everything is just so painstakingly detailed! )
I loved the posters of Sage and Madonna (2 of my favorite things) in the latest issue! I'm hoping that you'd get to draw Sage again after X-Men Reloaded, you know Sage's character so well and it shows in her face features, expressions, body language, clothing style, and whatnot.

Sal,
Any hints on who we might be seeing on the final cover of X-Treme X-Men? You are drawing it are you not? It would be nice to see a team shot closing out the series. One that included all the supporting cast that has come and gone as well. I know they weren't received very well, but Thunderbird, Lifeguard, and Slipstream did contribute to this series, as did Kitty, Beast, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler. And Emma, I s'pose. Even Jean, if she's resurrected by then. And let's not forget the New Mutants cast of Sunspot, Magma, and Empath. Oh, yeah, Lila, too. She rocks! (Not too greedy, am I?)

He said he won't be commenting much more on reload, so I doubt he'll answer, but he did say he'd be on an X book.
The most recent rumor on New (and I emphasize, it's just a rumor) is that Whedon/Cassaday wouldn't begin on NXM for at least another year. My guess is that Sal will be penciling it for the rest of 2004 while fill-in writers take the pen during that period.

hey Salvador I have to give you props for 4 issues in one month
I can't wait 4 issues 2 uncanny and 2 new. that is amazing. I am impressesed as well that month you have 2 x-treme covers (the uncanny and new -men covers) and some art in the udon/devils due street fighter comic.
So for April you are doing
7 covers
4 full comics
1 comic (not doing all the art)
spectacular
since X-treme has been canceled and Excalibur is replacing it will you be doing the Excalibur covers (are you allowed to tell us that or you have to stay quite about that).
My next question is that marvel has had you jump from book to book to book X-treme to Namor to uncanny (and new x-men) and now to ???? is this next book permanent????

My fist fix of Sal was on Heroes Return. I loved his work so much but barely new who the guy was back then. Who would have thought he would blow up so much. I mean Marvel must treat this guy better then any other artist because man he rocks and he never left or anything. I am so glad Marvel is using their brain for once.

Ok, I give up: what's the difference between the covers and interiors for Uncanny? Are the covers uninked and coloured by someone else? I like them a lot more than the interiors, can't understand it. Maybe Udon's colours aren't meshing as well as I thought they would... Ach, I'm not sure, everyone else in the world seems to think it's fantastic so I wouldn't worry about it!

Oh, I believe you. I felt the exact same way!! I didn't like Tony Daniels pencils at the beginning of his X-force run, but more towards the end it looked better and better.....he's my fav penciller to this day, love(d) his creator-owned stuff. I really hope he does some Tenth work sometime soon again, though I doubt it...:(
I do have a question though:
Will Liquid be colorring Sals work, or will it be Udon?
I personally prefer Liquid...

I second this.
Liquid's style and the higher-contrast palette that they tend to use is much better suited to Sal's artwork, imo.

Once again, I need to remind people that general discussion belongs at the Xavier Institute (http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=6). Folks, Salva is very busy man with all the books he's currently doing and it will save him a lot of time if he doesn't have to wade through posts that aren't directed towards him. Please be a little more considerate towards Salva in that regard.
Thanks,

Alright,
Mr. Larroca-- I'm not sure if this question has been asked, answered, or ignored outright as I haven't been round in a while, but I'll ask anyway... with RELOAD coming and you and Chuck Austen continuing whats been started (with a rather fantastic job with pencils by you, I have to say) in Uncanny, in X-Men... is there ANY possible way you can clue us in on what characters are going to be coming with you?
That, and who's your favorite current character to pencil?
Thanks,
and keep up the great work!

Mods in other threads have said it's ok to discuss the June covers as long as we use spoilers so I can say Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, Iceman, Juggernaut, Polaris and Havok are all on the cover in 90's style costumes, very similar to the Jim Lee designs ala X-Men 1.
And can I just say, Sal, incredible job! The inks on that particular cover work better with your pencils than any I've seen! Job well done!! Brilliant. Especially Wolverine! Love the new costumes!

Due to the June solicitations that Marvel has just released, I have a question for you Mr. Larocca. How does it feel to have Rogue and Remy to draw on a regular basis? You seem to have a real affinity for pencilling Gambit-your rendition is my favorite of all time. Are you excited about the team you will be drawing from May on?

Hey Salvador!
I would first like to tell you that your artwork is amazing. I have enjoyed your work for a very long time. I remember you doing Excalibur all those years ago and then you did the Heroes Return book which just blew me away. I knew from that point on that I would be addicted to your work and I was right!
You've improved tremendously over the years and commend you for pulling through with beautiful pieces all the time. I especially like the X-Men/X-Women lithographs that was made exclusively for Dynamic Forces. Those 2 pieces shows the incredible diversity, cleanness of your lines and the deep passion you have for your work. Each of the character were depicted beautifully especially the deceased Colossus and Psylocke. The way that you captured those 2 in the lithographs simply does them proper justice. Seeing how beautifully you portrayed these beloved and deceased characters makes me feel so honored to get a chance to see them.
Thank you so much for all of your hard work. You've been around forever and only now have people started to recognize your work. I hope that you continue to create for you have a talent unparalleled by others. Thanks for sharing you art with us all.

I'm not sure how many other people noticed this, but being such an "Emmaholic", I noticed you re-drew Emma on the cover of New X-Men 155 before it went to print (and added Beast).
I remember a few people criticizing the original version of the cover when it was solicited (at the time, the background was a side-view of Emma which even I had to admit looked a bit awkward). I was surprised to see you actually fixed it before it went to print. The new version looks much better, imo.
Good work, Sal

Salvador your cover for the X-men handbook was great, Richard Isanove colouring your pencils is great
I think he should colour all your artwork while Liquid and UDON (inked by Miki) are great its just so much better coloured by Richard
Marvel should get Richard to colour your interior pages of X-men (but uninked like the handbook covers)

Dear Mr. Larroca,
First I want to say I'm a big fan of your work! Your art is really fantastic and very detailed. Since I discovered your art in a few Excalibur issues years ago, I try to collect every Marvel issue that you pencilled.
You are also a big example for me, since I'm an (amateur) penciller too. I hope one day I can be that good as you.
I have also a few questions for you:
1) Who is your favorite X-man/woman?
2) Is penciler Carlos Pacheco a friend or colleague of yours? Because his work looks a little like yours.
Many thanks for your great work! (I hope you can understand my English, since my English isn't also very good. :)

I'm also interested the find out what his costume looks like under all that ice, but I know we probably won't be finding out anytime soon, with him being completely ice and all. Oh, one more thing do you have any plans to give Polaris a new costume in the future(Preferably something in green, and maybe some black).

i'm hoping against all odds that it' a NEW design for betsy, that can mean her return to the cannon. with the way the design was described, it looks like it's a bad-guy betsy design. and didn't the new solicitation for uncanny said the new brotherhood has a new member for a shocker? then this design pops outta nowhere? coincidence??? i hope not! it'd be cool to have betsy back even as a villainess as long as salva is drawing her.

I just have to say the first X-Men comic book that I bought was X-Treme X-Men by Claremont and Larocca, and the wonderful mix of my favorite characters and drop-dead-grogeous art convinced me to continue with the title. Nobody since Jim Lee has made Rogue look so sassy and powerful, and Larocca's is the sexiest Gumbo out there. It's because of great artists like you, Mr. Larocca, that I'm trying to pursue my dream as a penciler for the comic industry. Your work is just amazing. I hope you stay with X-Men because you just bring the comic to life.
By the way, the cover of #163 with Gambit is great.

Sal, you are a god in the world of comic books. :worthy: Thank you for making my favorite character :lorna: so beautiful. I was very sad to see her missing from the X-Woman litho, but I still bought it of course. It is an amazing piece of work. I am loving your art on X-Men, however, I don't feel that Danny Miki is the best choice for inking your work. No offense meant, it just doesn't really compliment your work. I hope you are starting to enjoy drawing Lorna as much as I enjoy seeing you draw her. You totally made her costume look fantastic. Especially the cape. I have a favor to ask though. Please put her back in heels. I know, it is a wierd request, but I love your women in heels.

Hey Sal,
This may seem a little random, but I was just looking at your art in the early issues of X-Treme X-Men (particularly the issues where you got to draw Lifeguard) and I have to say, those were TRULEY the BEST works of your career. I dont know if its the colors or the inks or the writing, but your current art in X-Men (particularly in issue 161) doesnt seem as great as your X-Treme X-Men art. I miss the good old days of your uninked work with Liquid! coloring. Those times your work had magic and even inspired me to want to draw for comics myself. Dont get me worng, your current work is still beautiful, I just dont get the same feeling I get when I see your work on X-Treme X-Men. Is there any way you could bring that magic back?
I love your art and I hope you keep drawing Marvel (and hopefully, X-Men) books for a long time.
One of your biggest fans and admirers,
Mike
EDIT: It's definitely UDON and the inks that downgrade your work. They just dont fit...The covers to your X-Men issues (with Liquid! coloring) are absolutely beautiful (and have that magic)!

No te olvides de nosotros, un saludo desde Internet  ! ah, y por cierto bastante gracioso el personaje del Toro, espero que aparezca de tanto en cuando por algún otro cómic ;)

A quick question:
Now that you are going to be in Spider-Man in 2005, are you leaving X-Men?

Hi Sal, I don't know if you still read the forums, I was wondering if you drew any unpublished character design-sheets, or pages to "Intifada" and "God Loves, Man Kills 2"? I heard they were originally written for you.

I hope not! I'm not sure if Sal still posts on here but I hope he can still keep working on X-Men. Sal you draw the best Polaris and Havok , so please don't leave.
