Quick Rating: Excellent!
Story Title: [Untitled]

After facing treacherous seas, our three adventurers have found themselves marooned on a not quite deserted island. Pallias and Dodona are still at it, Kreeg's missing, Arwyn's thoughts are focusing more on revenge, and the natives aren't just restless---they're zombies.

To achieve her revenge, she must reunite five fragments of a legendary arrow, calling back a powerful ally, and perhaps her only hope to see the tyrant dead. So far, she and her party have collected three of the five fragments. Lately, however, there have been a mysterious pair of aloof strangers playing some distant chesslike game and making the course of events for Arwyn and her questing crew all the more difficult.

As for this issue, while we don't get to see everybody's favorite tyrant, Mordath, we do find out who was behind the troll uprising a few issues back, and we get a better and more sinister view of the "Clash of the Titans pair," Pallias and Dodona. It turns out that Pallias has somewhat of a darker side, and there's a tense dynamic between Pallias and Dodona that we didn't see as much before, making the enigmatic pair even more interesting.

Arwyn is changing slightly lately, becoming perhaps a bit harder than before rather than warming up or coping---and this reviewer likes that direction.

Of course, this issue wouldn't be complete without a crazy old scientific coot and his labor force of zombie castaways threatening our characters. Usefully enough, Edginton doesn't just toss this in just for the heck of a short threat; the coot also serves as medium for a bit of history of the world as well as a lead-in about the island not quite being your typical island. In short, while this could have been some quick danger, there was enough substance to it that it left me hoping we actually see some more of the quirky old coot. ( That, and the flashback of the coot has him looking uncannily like Sean Connery meets LotR, and who doesn't want to see more of that ... ? )

The zombies look fantastic (and I usually hate zombies), and our main characters had some great facial expressions this time around. There are some beautiful images of Arwyn with tears, on a more serious side, but then on the more humorous side, the old coot has a fantastically rendered wildness going on with him, and Cassidy's face after Gareth starts saying something stupid on page 13 is an absolute crack-up (right along with Gareth's sorry ruse, comprising what might be my favorite humor moment in the entire issue). The flashback collage pages are fantastic (and again, feature a Sean Connery look alike---I love this image!). Also, in the pages with Pallias and Dodona, it just seemed like there was a real sense of the motion and dynamic displayed in the art alone---the angles, the hair, the relative sizing and composition, etc.

Sojourn is a title with both character and frequent action, pulled cleverly together by some really talented people. It shouldn't be missed!

Is this a good jumping on point? I might as well start reading it now if it is.

It's a pretty good place to jump on, in my opinion. I hopped on board with #24, and I'm well and truly hooked, even if I'm still getting caught up on all the backstory. Sojourn's just all kinds of excellent.
