John Stewart's heroic career started long before he became Green Lantern. Upon his birth, one of the immortal Guardians of the Universe told the Ancient Reader in the Tower of Talo that the Opener of Doors had been born. Back on Earth, John did not have an ideal childhood. His grandfather, Roy, was a gambler, a womanizer and an alcoholic who abused his wife, Addie. Grandpa Roy was killed, stabbed in the chest, by one of his many romantic liaisons. Furthermore, John's mother was dying of cancer. A religious woman like her mother before her, she believed this was part of God's plan for her. She had protected John from his father, who could be demanding and unforgiving. His father was an assembly line worker and often lectured John on the importance of learning about "the white man's world" so he could make the white man need him. John thought the better place his father was always referring to meant a better kind of building. He eventually came to believe he should learn how things were kept up, but not to question the secrets at the heart of things. John eventually went on to become an architect, but as a black man found work hard to come by.

John's break into superheroics came when Guy Gardner, the alternate choice for Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814 (Earth's home sector), was injured and Hal Jordan was ordered by the Guardians to train a replacement should Jordan ever be injured as well. The Guardians chose John. Given a power ring and the uniform of the Corps, John discarded the mask, claiming he had nothing to hide.

John's first case showed the racism that he would face as Green Lantern. When rescuing a crashing plane containing racist Senator Jeremiah Clutcher he purposefully covered the Senator in oil. As punishment Hal Jordan assigned him as Clutcher's bodyguard. While doing this he uncovered a racist plot of the Senator's involving attempted assassination in order to further his bigoted policies, turning over the Senator and his accomplices to the authorities.

Over the next few years, John acted as Green Lantern when Jordan was unable to protect Earth. During this time he fought alongside the JLA against the Key and later Dr Destiny, aided Green Arrow and Black Canary, and took his first (unsuccessful) flight in space where he helped cure Hal of a fatal illness.

John gained his first major job as an architect thanks to Carol Ferris, Hal's on-off girlfriend and employer. Whilst working on this job, the Guardians of the Universe contacted John about being the new Green Lantern for Sector 2814. John was not impressed by the Guardians' expectation of him to abandon his home life. Dishonoured by his refusal, John first met Katma Tui as she accused him of cowardice. John refused to wear this label and accepted the mantle of Green Lantern of Sector 2814 full time. He also donned a mask for the first time out of respect of Hal Jordan. He continued working for Ferris Aircraft as his alter ego and soon after he accepted the position full time Hal Jordan found out his secret identity. John went on to fight Eclipso, Major Disaster and other Green Lantern foes, each being confused at the new Lantern's appearance. John was also given further training at his own request by Katma Tui.

A reporter by the name of Tawny Young also discovered his secret identity and, having been denied an exclusive by John earlier in her career, exposed his secret identity on national television. This resulted in John being laid off by Ferris Aircraft as Carol Ferris wanted no connection with Green Lantern. Katma Tui, wanting to drive a wedge between John and Hal so the former would stay with the Corps, kissed John claiming it was merely an attempt at getting back at Ferris. The two kissed again after a fight with Sonar, this time with a bit more passion.

John's relationship with Katma Tui continued as the two continued adventuring together. After helping re establish the Corps and the Guardians' authority following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the two settled on Earth along with five other Green Lanterns forming the Green Lantern Corps of Earth. To distinguish the seven lanterns, each took a unique costume though John's was virtually identical to Katma's, showing their growing closeness. Their relationship blossomed as the two were married and continued adventuring side by side.

Tragedy struck the pair though when Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris' alter ego) murdered Katma Tui leaving John alone. His life continued to get worse when he joined a group of heroes in battling Darkseid. His overconfidence whilst on a mission with the Martian Manhunter resulted in the destruction of the planet Xanshi. John plunged into depression as the ring made him hear the death cries of every inhabitant on the planet and was on the verge of committing suicide until the Martian Manhunter stopped him.

In an attempt to atone for his mistakes John joined the intergalactic police force, the Darkstars. John immediately became the field leader for the force and started to become romantically linked to Merayn Dethalis. John's tenure with the group ended after a battle against Grayven, which resulted in the deaths of numerous Darkstars and left John paralysed.

Returning to Earth and retiring from being a super hero, John continued living with Merayn and restarted his architectural career. Whilst paralysed John became a mentor of sorts to Kyle Rayner, the latest Green Lantern and also helped to build the Justice Society of America's new headquarters. He also contributed to Guy Gardener's 'Warriors' bar. John's life regained new meaning when Hal Jordan visited him before Hal sacrificed his life in re-igniting the Sun. As one of Hal's parting gifts to the Earth he cured John's paralysis. After some serious soul searching, John decided to use his new mobility in a heroic role and accepted Kyle's request for him to take over the Green Lantern of Earth mantle. John is currently serving with the Justice League.

John's power ring enables him to create constructs of green energy from the remnants of the Oan power battery. Unlike previous power rings, John possesses no need to recharge every 24 hours and no weakness to yellow. The energy constructs can be manipulated and animated and are only limited by the ring bearers imagination and willpower. Once John stops willing a construct to be it dissipates. His ring also acts as a super computer capable of intricate analysis as well as a self defence mechanism, subconsciously shielding the user from any physical harm. The ring's only weakness is that it will not take a sentient life. As a Darkstar, John wore the Darkstar uniform which allowed flight, super strength, agility and speed as well as a personal force field and concussive energy beams.

So was it Kyle Rayner or Guy Gardiner that Grant Morrison used during his run on JLA (I read some trades - Rock of Ages, World War III, the Earth 2 graphic novel)? And said Gren Lantern was the same one featured in JLA/Avengers too, until Hal appeared on the scene in issue 3, right? Cheers.
