Biologists Mark and Marie Logan took their son Garfield with them to the African country of Upper Lamumba, where they were conducting research on genetic codes. Gar came down with a rare tropical disease that was believed only animals could survive. To save his son, Professor Logan treated Gar with an untested machine that he originally developed to isolate the common genetic bond shared between humans and animals. Gar recovered, but a side effect turned his skin green. A few years later, a deadly Black Mamba snake threatened his mother, and Gar's desire to rescue his mother brought forth his powers, changing him into a mongoose. Several years later, Gar was orphaned in an incident which he still feels he could have prevented. Gar was then raised by King Tawaba, a friend of the Logans and chief of the local tribe. The tribe's witch doctor, had hated the Logans so much that he arranged for two Americans to kill Gar. An accident killed the witch doctor, but the two American looters rescued Gar and brought him back to the U.S. in order to force him to commit crimes for them. The two men eventually killed each other, and the courts set out to appoint a legal guardian for Gar, Nicholas Galtry. Galtry was an evil man who was the attorney for the Logan estate. While the young Logan was missing in Africa, Galtry had embezzled funds from Gar's inheritance. When Gar was found, Galtry plotted to kill the boy and have all the wealth for himself.

Gar's life improved when he met Rita "Elasti-Girl" Farr and Steve "Mento" Dayton of the Doom Patrol. Eventually, Gar began working alongside the Doom Patrol, so Galtry secured the services of various villains in attempts to kill Gar and the Doom Patrol. Once Rita Farr and Steve Dayton were married, the couple adopted Gar after winning a court battle against Nicholas Galtry. Gar was allowed to work alongside the Doom Patrol and served well until the rest of the Patrol was killed by Madame Rouge and General Zahl.

Needing a change of scenery, Gar left home and travelled to Hollywood where he became an actor on a regular TV show. Gar's acting ability and the show's episodes were less than memorable, and soon Gar found himself out of a job and looking for a place to stay. Out of work, Gar was reunited with his high-school girlfriend, Jillian Jackson, only to have her kidnapped by the armoured villain, the Arsenal. Gar discovered that the Arsenal was actually Galtry and finally defeated him, removing him from his life. While on the West Coast, Gar became a member of Titans West. By that time his powers were maturing with his animals seeming more life like and the duration of his transformations being linked to the animal's size.

After changing his name to Changeling on the advice of his public relations people, Gar became an official member of the New Teen Titans. As a member of the New Teen Titans, Gar forged a close friendship with fellow Titan, Vic Stone (Cyborg). Changeling's time with the Titans has had its rough spots. He fell in love with Terra, a sociopathic teenaged girl who was working for the Terminator. Terra pretended to like Gar while she infiltrated the Titans. After Terra died in battle, Gar went berserk with grief and sought revenge against the Terminator. Gar refused to acknowledge Terra's duplicity until he learned from the Terminator that it was Terra who had killed King Tawaba.
Jillian Jackson returned from boarding school in Europe and re-entrered Gar's life. She was able to ease some of his loneliness and bitterness following the death of Terra; they resumed their romantic relationship.

Sometime later, Gar's adopted father, Steve Dayton went insane and formed a new group called the Hybrid to hunt the Titans. Raven cured Dayton and he and Gar resumed their father and son relationship. However, Dayton forbade Gar from participating in any more of the Titans' adventures until his grades improved. Gar began to attend public school and took a leave of absence from the Titans. Meanwhile, exposure to the Mento helmet unleashed a new side of Gar, a darker side. Instead of taking the form of normal animals found in nature, Gar began to shape shift into strange demonic creatures and found himself liking it.

Raven had become evil and continued her reign of terror planting 'Trigon seeds' in Changeling and other Titans. Under Raven's influence, Changeling attacked the Titans and helped Raven recruit other vessels to implant her seeds. Eventually, Raven and her demon allies came into conflict with the Titans. With the help of Phantasm, the Titans destroyed this evil incarnation of Raven. Gar was brought to S.T.A.R. Labs, where he could hopefully be purged of the 'Trigon seed' that lay inside him.
Sometime later, Gar broke out of his captivity in S.T.A.R. Labs and escaped. During a final conflict with the dormant evil Raven, Gar was able to free himself from the 'Trigon seed'. Since being purged of the demonic seed, Gar resorted to shape shifting into normal animals, rather than demonic creatures.

Following that, Raven, Minion and Gar elected to remain in space as traveling companions to Vic. Frightened by Vic's total embrace of technology, Gar left his friend and returned to Earth. Whilst he was away, Vic received an Omegadrome warsuit which allowed him to carry out his pre-programmed imperative of rebuilding the planet Technis. Using the Moon as a vital component in his plans, Vic was opposed by the JLA and the Titans and Gar was crucial in appealing to the human side of his best friend, thus saving the Moon and Earth.

Gar chose not to rejoin the Titans, leaving to once again pursue his acting career. Whilst in Hollywood Gar readopted the code name Beast Boy due to it being more popular with the Hollywood crowd. His acting career has not benefited from this change yet as he still flounders.

Gar agreed to reform Titans West, calling it Titans L.A. after his cousin, Matt Logan, hosted a recruitment drive/beer kegger. However, when visiting New York, Gar mentioned that no one on the team had any real devotion to it. Beast Boy and Flamebird attempted to recruit the DEO orphans as the new version of Titans West, but they declined. The current status of Titans L.A. seems dubious, at best.

Recently Gar has helped reform the Teen Titans after the tragic death of Donna Troy. Along with Starfire and Cyborg, Gar is seen as one of the teachers of the new generation, though at 19 he fits in with the younger heroes too. Gar's time with the team was punctuated most by his relationship with Raven growing closer and deeper. He also caused a national uproar when a city of children became infected with his powers. This adventure posed more questions about Gar's parentage

One year after the Crisis Gar has changed. The original Doom Patrol have reformed and Gar's adoptive parents are once again alive and looking after him. According to Cybrog's memory banks, Gar at some point left the Titans because he and Raven were drfiting apart. Gar seems settled with the Doom Patrol, even after revelations about the Chief's machinations in forming the group.

Gar's powers stem from his ability to take the form and properties of any animal he chooses except the colour, which remains green. The length of time he can maintain this form depends on the creature's size with larger creatures requiring more effort. Gar's strength, agility and speed change to those of the animal he transforms into. When Gar changed into demonic images the extra abilities he gained were based on his own perceptions of his transformation. Recently Gar changed into a venemous snake and showed that when he changes into an animal he not only takes the strength and speed of the animal but also takes on their main features such as venom, octopus ink or tarantula's spines.

fair enough. I'm almost certain that I'm going to have a long night in the near future thanks to Byrne screwing with Gar's history.
