Ronnie Raymond had already had years of super heroing experience before he became the second Firestorm. With his separation from the Firestorm matrix it appeared that he would be able to return to his normal life at last.
Fate however, chose to deal Ronnie a different hand. Due to the enormous exposure to radiation that had occurred during his time as part of Firestorm I, Ronnie had developed terminal leukaemia. Finding refuge with Captain Atom's branch of the Justice League, Ronnie's leukaemia caused him to burst into flames uncontrollably, taking on his original Firestorm appearance. Whilst the Justice League attempted to help cure Ronnie, it was Professor Martin Stein who did so after having his offer to Ronnie of rejoining within the Firestorm matrix rejected.
With Ronnie's powers under control he became an active member of Captain Atom's League, taking a more extreme attitude to serving justice. Ronnie was a part of the group until its eventual dissolution. Whilst with the group he garnered some fame as a male model. However, his biggest enemy was ironically alcohol. Ronnie's mentor, Stein, had struggled with alcoholism early in Firestorm's career and the same illness now attacked Ronnie. Ronnie repeatedly had to confront his alcoholism and whilst it is no longer as major an influence on his life he still occasionally struggles to abstain from drinking.
Ronnie's studies had almost stopped once he fused with Mikhail Arkadin in the second matrix pairing of Firestorm I. To combat this he enrolled at Ivy University under Professor Ray "Atom II" Palmer. During his time at Ivy he attended classes alongside deceased Titans member, Joto and forged a close friendship with him. Recently it appears Ronnie has transferred schools and is now attending Eastern State University.
Firestorm's next attempt at a team set up was an independently run Justice League of Europe with Amazing Man II, Crimson Fox II, Ice Maiden and the Blue Devil. However, Ice Maiden turned out to be the villain Mist and Firestorm could only watch as she killed Crimson Fox, Amazing Man and the Blue Devil. Since then Firestorm acted as a JLA reserve whilst continuing his studies. Recently he was called into the JLA full time as part of Batman's handpicked replacement JLA. Ronnie also had a brief spell with the fledgling super team, the Power Company in order to earn a steady wage but has since left to give his full attentions to the JLA. He has remained on the JLA's roster following the core members' return and has formed a close friendship with the wife of Manitou Raven, Dawn.
Firestorm's powers are identical to those of Martin Stein, Firestorm I. Somehow he inhabits a different kind of matrix to that of Stein, which enables him to access the powers he originally possessed but not to wield them at the level of Earth's fire elemental. Recently Ronnie has been having problems with his powers due to his lack of confidence with chemistry. At times he has used the Atom, Oracle and even a robotic Green Lantern to assist him in making the correct chemical equations. Whether Ronnie needs this knowledge to properly implement his powers or whether this reliance on the knowledge is a construct of Ronnie's sub conscious has yet to be discovered.
Recently Firestorm joined forces with Captain Marvel, Vixen and the Shining Knight in trying to track down various villains who may have killed Sue Dibny. Whilst he was fighting the Shadow Theif, Ronnie was stabbed by the Shining Knight's sword. Realising that he was about to explode Ronnie flew into the atmosphere where he died. His essence became part of the Firestorm matrix and entered another young man by the name of Jason Rusch.
Firestorm has the ability to transmute objects of his choosing by seeing the atomic structure of the object and rearranging its molecular structure. This ability is limited to his knowledge of the chemical structure of the object he wishes to create. Firestorm has some sort of mental block that means his transmutation powers only work on non-organic substances. If he attempts to change an organic object, he experiences an energy feedback that temporarily incapacitates him. Firestorm can also alter the density of objects, including himself. In addition, he can project intense heat and flame, project nuclear energy bolts, fly at great speed, and absorb radiation and explosive force harmlessly into himself.
