Quick Rating: Great!

Wolverine crash lands into the middle of nowhere, where he is greeted by an odd little girl named Po, who begs Logan to help her rescue her father. Oh yeah, and her uncle, nearby, is The Incredible Hulk.

Sam Kieth brings us an interesting look at Wolverine when he’s alone and doesn’t have anyone to act cool around. As mentioned above, he’s crashed landed into an icy, mountainous region with no rescue in sight, when suddenly a little girl, Po, appears out of thin air. Is she a mutant? A hallucination? Logan isn’t so sure but, being a superhero and all, he agrees to help Po rescue her father, who she says is trapped underwater, where they crash landed. They must make haste because “he can’t hold his breath forever.”

What Po doesn’t tell Logan is that they’re making a detour to meet up with her uncle, who will surely know how to save her father (see, only her uncle knows how to undo the safety belt on the plane, to free her dad). I don’t think Wolverine would mind the detour... more like destination – into the dwelling of the savage Hulk!

The story itself, while funny and cute , lacked a real focus besides “calm Hulk down and rescue Po’s dad.” The cliffhanger was a let-down since it wasn’t much of one at all – they’re faced with the same exact challenge as they encountered in the middle of the issue: get Hulk to revert to “Uncle Bruce.” The dialogue is excellent though, and I’m already loving the Po character, who’s got such a mysterious air around her, hastily covered in bubblegum innocence, that I’m antsy to know what her real deal is.

There are also some details left out that kept me from fully believing what I was seeing (of course that may be the point). Why was Logan flying some rickety old plane and not, say, the X-Wing? If Bruce Banner sent Po and her dad off on an airplane, how come the Hulk is near where they crash landed? These aren’t questions I feel were neglected (I’m sure Kieth will get to them) but I wish they gave us some hints this issue so I didn’t feel like I was paying the hefty $3.50 price tag for a mere teaser.

Wolvie’s “battle” with the Hulk had certain questionable elements as well. The Hulk (you know: the strongest one there is?) lands punches square on the ol’ canucklehead’s... er... head and the X-Man merely falters as if he’s been duking it out with Tyson. And since when does Logan take combat strategy from a seven-year-old-potential-hallucination? He keeps his claws sheathed because Po asks him to! Aww... how sweet while at the same time frighteningly suicidal.

I’m not in the business of saying anything negative about Sam Kieth’s art, so look elsewhere for that kind of talk. This book is outright gorgeous, if you’re into bizzare, surreal imagery. Kieth contorts the book’s stars into moody, severe caricatures and came up with the brilliant idea of degenerating Po into a “simple” physical state, her appearance becoming like a child’s crayon drawing. While John Romita Jr. is doing excellent work over on The Incredible Hulk, I’m beginning to miss seeing Kieth draw the big guy regularly. Maybe another mini-series, but that’s for another time. This book is a joy to look at, and, all points aside, a solid read so I recommend you give it a try.

I really like Keith's art and his style... and I think it works well with the tone of the book. It reminds me of those old Marvel Comic's Presents... that featured Wolverine.

Cool stuff, and a good review!

Thanks, and yeah his art is great. I just bought the Zero Girl TPB (that he wrote and drew) and it was pretty wierd, but I guess that's no surprise. It was good, though.

A big fan of his since THE MAXX.

That isn´t true ! I read it, too and I liked it although it confused me at the beginning. I can´t wait to see the next part.

I picked up the issue and although it was interesting with the art style, I didn't care for it. The story is being introduced in an odd way and it feels weak with no real development except for fisticuffs between Wolvie and Hulk. I've never read Sam keith's work before so maybe that's why I didn't care for this story.
