First Appearance: Batman: Sword of Azrael #1

Several centuries ago, the templar knight Dumas split from his group to found his own Order of St. Dumas. They pillaged villages to gain their wealth, and eventually came upon the fabled treasure of King Solomon. Using this capital, this secret society began collecting information to forward its personal agendae and researching technology that would advance them far beyond the rest of the known world. To guard their knowledge and wealth, the Order created the Azraels. For many generations, each Azrael passed on from father to son.
On a fateful mission of the utmost importance, the Order of St. Dumas leader Brother Rollo gave Ludovic Valley the task of assassinating a traitor named Carleton Lehah. Azrael's first attempt was in Europe, which proved unsuccessful. When Lehah fled to the United States, Azrael needed the assistance of one Patricia Partridge, who was a former underling of Lehah's. Patricia attempted to introduce some humanity into the otherwise mechanical and aloof Ludovic, who had been trained to merely obey orders without thought or emotion. It was she who urged Ludovic to bring his son, Jean Paul, a gift as they had not met for a prolonged amount of time. But Ludovic's lack of experience in these matters only made it more awkward when he gave the confused Jean Paul a baseball and walked away without so much as a hello or goodbye. Little did either know that the next time the two meet would be their last. It seemed as though Patricia was someone who would break Ludovic's programming and stimulate more human characteristics from within him. However, Azrael was preoccupied and intensely focused on his mission for the Order. When Patricia found out about Ludovic's true identity as the Azrael tasked to kill Lehah, the spirit of St. Dumas appeared to him and ordered him to kill her. Refusing the order, Azrael confronted Lehah for a final battle, in which he was ultimately shot several times. Gravely wounded, Ludovic crawled to Jean Paul and bestowed the legacy of the Azrael upon him, with a yearning for his son to break free of the Order's systematic programming. Although Ludovic failed as an Azrael, he was able to gain his humanity during the last few moments of his life.
Like other Azraels before him, Ludovic Valley was trained by the Order of St. Dumas to be a pure killing machine. In the field, he wore an earlier version of Nomoz's armour and wielded a flaming sword to slay his opponents.
