Victor Stone was born to scientist parents, Silas and Elinore Stone, who worked for S.T.A.R. Labs. They had great expectations that their son Vic would one day, too, become a great scientist. But the two were obssessed with their trade. Not only were they neglectful of his emotional needs, but they also conducted various experimentations on Vic that artificially endowed him with a genius I.Q. However, his parent's neglect left him feeling lonely, and only finding company in his high school girlfriend Marcy Reynolds. As a teen, Vic rebelled against their plans for his future by having aspirations of becoming a professional athlete. This of course greatly disappointed his parents, especially his father. Over the years, Vic grew further and further apart from them because of their disapproval.
One day, Vic visited his parents while they were conducting experiments with interdimensional gateways. Tragedy struck when a plasmic blob monster made its way through to this world. It went on a rampage and killed Vic's mother, and gravely wounded Vic himself. Having lost his wife and with his son's own life laying in the balance, Vic's father had no intention of losing him too. So he used S.T.A.R. Labs technology and his own experimentations to save his son by grafting him with cybernetic replacement body parts. When Vic woke up half-man half-machine, he felt inhuman, blamed his father for the way his life turned out, and virtually disowned him. Vic felt like a freak and withdrew from society as a recluse. When the mystical Raven formed a new Teen Titans group to muster up forces against her father, the demon Trigon, she invited the loner Vic Stone to use his newfound abilities for the greater good as the superhero Cyborg. Vic accepted, albeit with reservations.
In an attempt to reconcile with his son, Vic's father Silas built Titans Tower for the team. But it wasn't until Silas revealed that he was dying of radiation poisoning that Vic truly accepted his father's olive branch. The two spent as much quality time as possible, even in playing sports that Silas once vilified Vic for doing. When Silas could no longer move outside his deathbed, Vic remained by his side till his last dying breath, and the two parted as father and son once more. Vic then sought solace in his ex-girlfriend, Marcy Reynolds. But Marcy was shocked to see Vic's robotic appearance and wanted nothing to do with him. Soon after, the Titans encountered the evil cult called the Church of Blood and their leader, Brother Blood. Vic was surprised to find that Marcy was part of the cult, but when she realised just what she had joined, it was too late. In her attempts to flee to Vic, she was killed by the Church of Blood.
With both parents and the love of his life now dead, Vic felt more lonely than ever before. Fortunately, during an "maintenance" session at S.T.A.R. Labs, Vic met with the beautiful Dr. Sarah Charles. Their physical therapy relationship soon became a romantic one. Even when Sarah moved to the S.T.A.R. Labs' San Francisco branch, the two maintained a loving long-distance relationship. Over the years, Vic's technological role, both on and off the battlefield, became a truly invaluable asset for the Teen Titans. He realised his true calling as a hero and, with the help of his Titans family, especially his best friend Gar Logan (Changeling, now Beast Boy), and his girlfriend Sarah, learned to accept himself for what he was.
During the Wildebeest Society's Titans hunt, several of the team's members were captured. Vic's unconscious body was placed in a rocket and blown into the sky. An old friend of the Titans, the Russian superhero named Red Star, found Cyborg's body in Siberia. He then took it to a scientist, who attempted to reconstruct Cyborg, but could only restore him as a mindless robot with Vic Stone's brain patterns nowhere in sight. The Titans then took him back to S.T.A.R. Labs, but alas, they too were unable to restore Cyborg's human side. Cyborg remained with the Titans, but some of them missed the warm heart of their old friend Vic.
Soon after, the Titans came upon an alien cyber-collective known as the Technis. One of its progeny, called Zavior, had come to Earth and planned to transform the planet into a cold, robotic techno-organic place much like itself. The Titans were able to defeat Zavior, but not without a cost. Cyborg was rendered dysfunctional and was seemingly at the end of his life. The Technis offered to assimilate his body, mind, and soul to save him, to which he accepted. From this assimilation was born the Technis progeny called Cyberion, which displayed certain characteristics of Vic Stone.
During a war on Starfire's homeworld of Tamaran, the planet was destroyed, along with most of the Technis. Instead of returning to Earth, Cyberion opted to help them build a New Tamaran out of an uninihabited planet. During this time, the alien named Minion gave Cyberion a device called the Omegadrome, which allowed him to morph and be more flexible. Using the Omegadrome, Cyberion would then attempt to rebuild the Technis. But unbeknownst to him, he was becoming less and less human with its rapid growth.
Once revived, the new Technis entity were able to tap into Vic Stone's memories and found Earth's Moon to be a suitable new homeworld for them. The Technis were able to override Cyberion's will and program an imperative to transform the Moon. The now-planet-sized Technis came to Earth and became a threat that took the combined might of the Titans and JLA to hold back. The JLA wanted to stop the being at any cost, but knowing their old friend Vic Stone was a part of the Technis, the Titans stood in the way of their mentors. The Titans were finally able to convince the JLA that there was a way to both stop the Technis and save Vic. Several Titans, including those most familiar with Vic, had to reach out to any remnant of Vic's soul still left within the Technis. Vic's mind and soul were retrieved and the threat was defused. But the JLA had no intentions of allowing Cyborg to be free in society. On Nightwing's word, Cyborg was allowed to be part of the Titans under his watch.
Excited to be back on Earth with a mind completely his own, Vic sought his girlfriend Sarah Charles. He was saddened to find that she had moved on during his many years of absence, but at the same time, understood that it would have been unfair to keep her waiting and not knowing when, or if he would ever come back at all. Using S.T.A.R. Labs' DNA sample of Vic Stone's original body and the Omegadrome, Vic's human body was restored in a clone. Vic then attempted to set up a new life in Keystone City, where his old Titans buddy Wally West (the Flash) resided. But in an encounter with the villain called the Thinker, Vic morphed into his original half-man half-robot Cyborg appearance, and the Omegadrome was deactivated, rendering him stuck in that form.
After the death of his old Titans teammate, Donna Troy (Troia), the other Titans lost their morale and disbanded the team. However, Vic, along with Beast Boy and Starfire, took on the young superheroes Superboy, Robin, Wonder Girl, and Kid Flash under their wing to train them in a new Teen Titans team, despite reservations from both old Titans members and the JLA.
Though Vic has lost the morphing abilities of the Omegadrome, his cyborg body is still a very capable unit on and off the battlefield. It has an arsenal of weapons ranging from intensely focused lasers to white sound generators, and at one time, even medium shell rounds. His cybernetic enhancements have also given him above human strength and endurance. His cybernetic eye has multiple functions in that it can be used for infra-red vision in the dark, microscopic vision for the molecular, or stereoscopic vision for the far. Vic's high artificially boosted I.Q. also makes him a highly capable technician. Vic has become the default leader of the Teen Titans and is determined to use his experience to nurture the next generation of Earth's protectors.
