Thousands of years ago, a being called the Cleric visited Ancient Krypton. He established a cult there that condemned the Kryptonian's use of clones and cloning. Kem-El, a renowned Kryptonian scientist and ancestor to Superman's family, created a small, golden genetic device called the Eradicator to wipe out aliens from Krypton during what was to be called "the Great Purge." Before the Kryptonians could get rid of him, the Cleric stole the Eradicator and fled the planet. For thousands of years, he kept the device and roamed the universe, finally being captured by the intergalactic warlord known as Mongul and enslaved on Warworld.
When Superman had a mental breakdown, decided that he was a danger to Earth, and imposed a self-exile into outer space, he travelled to Warworld. There, he met the Cleric, and when the two exchanged their life stories, the Cleric decided he should "return" the Eradicator to its rightful owner, the presumed last living Kryptonian. When Superman ended his exile, he brought the Eradicator home with him to Earth, where it would proceed to wreak havok in the lives of Superman and those around him. At one time, it even gave a frightened Jimmy Olsen (Superman's best friend) powers of an elastic body. Superman deemed it too dangerous for innocent human beings and decided to keep it out of harms way by burying it deep down in Antarctica.
The Eradicator, however, had other ideas. Its program of the preservation of Krypton and all Kryptonians kicked in. It first created a Kryptonian fortress where it lay, in the middle of nowhere in Antarctica, then proceeded in its attempt to transform Earth. Its effects reached Superman psychically as Kal-El denounced his Clark Kent persona and Earth heritage to became a "pure" Kryptonian, even going so far as dropping his Earth-given moniker of Superman in favour of Krypton Man. But with the help of his loving friends and family, Kal-El eventually defeated the Eradicator and returned to his usual self. Obviously, even keeping the Eradicator buried deep down beneath the earth was not safe. And so with a heavy heart, Superman flung the legacy remnant from his homeworld into the Sun.
Superman had no idea that his ancestor had made this device so resilient. While the Eradicator's machinery was destroyed by the Sun, its essence and energy remained. The Eradicator returned. When Superman was killed by the hands of Doomsday, the Eradicator retrieved Superman's body from his tomb, absorbed its residual energy to strengthen his own new humanoid body, and then took it to the Fortress of Solitude in Antarctica, where the Eradicator helped it slowly restore solar energy. Meanwhile, the comatose Jonathan Kent helped to retrieve Superman's soul. But this was a slow process, and for a while, the Eradicator met with Lois Lane, claiming to be a resurrected Superman but with absolutely no remaining aspect of Clark Kent whatsover. This caused confusion as a cyborg being (Cyborg II) claiming to be another resurrection and an adolescent clone (Superboy) both had Superman's DNA. When Superman was finally revived, along with Superboy, Supergirl, and Steel, the Eradicator helped him to defeat the plans of the fake Cyborg Superman and Mongul to turn Earth into another Warworld. During the final battle, the Eradicator sacrificed its energy to restore Superman to full strength. Superman took the weakened Eradicator's body to S.T.A.R. Labs.
The Eradicator was now in the hands of one Dr. David Connor, a S.T.A.R. Labs scientist dying of cancer. Dr. Connor's experiments with the Kryptonian being went awry, and the two were merged. The Eradicator's energy did, however, enable Dr. Connor to survive the cancer. He then sought out to be his own hero just like Superman. When the Eradicator saw that the Kingdom of Markovia was in civil unrest, he travelled there to help with the worsening situation. However, he mistakenly chose the side of the evil vampire Roderick instead of Prince Brion Markov, a.k.a. Geo-Force of the Outsiders. The situation was diffused, but from it came two different Outsiders teams -- one led by Geo-Froce; the other led by the Eradicator. It took the later threat of the villainous sorcerer Felix Faust to bring the two groups together as one. But it wasn't long before the team faded away.
Alone again, the Eradicator's original programming began to kick in once more and proved again to be a threat to Earth and its society. Conscious of this, he decided to go on a self-exile away from Earth, much like Superman had done many years prior. And just like Superman's exile, the Eradicator came back as a harbinger of bad news. After learning of Imperiex's plans to destroy the planet Earth, the Eradicator returned to warn Superman and Earth's heroes. Unfortunately, the Joker, who at the time was on a rampage of "jokerising" many of the world's heroes and villains with his Joker serum, also did as such to the Eradicator. This made him even more volatile than he already was before. With the help of S.T.A.R. Labs' Professore Emil Hamilton, Superman was able to separate David Connor from the Eradicator once more and freeze the latter -- a state he has been in to this day.
The Eradicator is a being of energy that was contained in the device that was created by Kem-El. Ever since its conception, its main protocol has been the preservation of Kryptonians and their genetic integrity at all costs. Conversely, this overlapped with its attention to spreading their cultural integrity as well. It has also been designed to maintain a psychic link with all Kryptonians. Its abilities are many and even Superman and Prof. Hamilton are not sure that they've scoped its full capacity, though they are sure that most of it is genetic-related. It has an innate ability of energy manipulation and often uses it as an offensive weapon. When the Eradicator took on a humanoid form, it absorbed the dead Superman's energy, it also gained his abilities of flight, superstrength, superspeed, and high level of invulnerability. Though not susceptible to Kryptonite by nature, after he absorbed Superman's energy and memories, his body began thinking and reacting to Kryptonite just as any other Kryptonian would. Also, because his humanoid state is not his original or natural one, the Eradicator's sensitive eyes cannot stand bright light and must be protected with a special visor.
