At the dawn of mankind, a woman bearing child was beaten to death by her mate. Her soul was taken by the five Olympian goddesses, Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, and Hestia and from it was created the first of the Amazons named Hippolyta. Following her, the goddesses further created the race of Amazons from the souls of slain women, and rain and clay. Though the headstrong god of war, Ares, was vehemently against this idea, and so he meddled in their creation by secretly fathering the first two, the sisters Hippolyta and Antiope.

The Amazons were given the city of Themyscira close to Greece, and trained in physical combat with a multitude of weapons and styles. This garnered them with the reputation of feminist anti-male warriors. The demi-god Heracles felt intimidated by their existence and decided to pay them a visit. The Amazons were once more wronged by man when the barbaric Heracles and his band pillaged the city, and raped and enslaved the Amazons. After the Amazons defeated Heracles and drove him away, the two leader sisters had a major disagreement that divided their people. Those who followed Antiope sought vengeance on Heracles and remained in Eastern Europe creating the splinter Bana Mighdall Amazons. Whereas those who were loyal to Hippolyta were set on the island of Themyscira, or what man would later call "Paradise Island," and followed the Olympian gods' order to guard a doorway to a demon dimension. For three thousand years, the Themyscirian Amazons lived away from the corruption of man. As Amazons could be born from clay, they had no need for man, and could find pleasure within each other.

During World War II, a Hippolyta from the future came to fight as Wonder Woman in the first Justice Society of America, alongside other golden age heroes, the Atom, Dr. Fate, Dr. Mid-Nite, the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Sandman, Sandy, the Spectre, and Starman. With them, she defeated many of that era's supervillains, and even had a hand in defeating the global threat of Nazi Germany and the Japanese invasions. She even gained an archenemy of her own, the supervillainness called Dark Angel -- a hatred that would have dire consequences later on in the lives of her loved ones. For now, because of Hippolyta, Wonder Woman became a paragon of women's strength and even became a factor of the feminist movement, influencing many women around the world, including a World War II fighter pilot named Diana Trevor.

But Hippolyta's influence did not have completely positive results. Together with the JSA, they fought with other superhero teams as the larger All-Star Squadron. Therein came Hippolyta's meeting with Helena Kosmatos, the Young All-Stars member known as Fury, who herself was granted her powers by Greek demi-gods. The two became close and Hippolyta even became a surrogate mother for the teenage hero. But Fury became obssessed with Wonder Woman, and when she left to return to her own time, began descending into madness, going so far as naming her own daughter Hippolyta (who would become the second Fury) after her idol.

Meanwhile, the pilot Diana Trevor crash-landed on Themyscira and found the Amazonian women nearly defeated at the hands of a horrible monster. She helped them defeat the beast, though at the cost of her own life. The Amazons revered her as a hero, and kept her memory dear to their ongoing survival. When Queen Hippolyta longed for the child she carried in a previous life, she received divine guidance to make a clay statue, and with the help of the goddess Gaea, imbued life into it and named her newborn daughter Diana in memory of the hero Diana Trevor.

Hippolyta made sure that Diana was trained to become a warrior whose might surpassed all Amazons before her. But being the only child amongst a whole society of grown-ups, Diana was lonely, and longed for a playmate of her own age. She was granted this wish by the Amazon sorceress Magala, and from her own reflection was born a mystical duplicate. Fearing that this was not a wise decision, Magala and Diana kept the existence of this duplicate from Hippolyta. It was only a short time before Hippolyta's nemesis Dark Angel came to Themyscira to abduct Diana as vengeance. But she mistook the duplicate for the Princess and had instead taken her, making her live the confusing lives of Donna Troy. The two adolescent Amazons spent too short a time together, without "their" mother Hippolyta even knowing.

As the world became a smaller and smaller place, Hippolyta and the Olympian gods decided it would be best to send an ambassador into man's world. So a contest was held to choose a champion among them for this specific task. Queen Hippolyta's daughter, Princess Diana, begged to try out, but was banned from entering by her overprotective mother. When a masked Amazon won the contest, Hippolyta was surprised to find her daughter under the disguise. Hesitant, she had no choice but to crown her own daughter as Wonder Woman and blessed her to go off spreading the ideals of peace, love, and harmony in man's world.

When the demi-god sorceress Circe sought more power for herself, she manipulated many pantheons such as the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, New Gods, and many other deities, into warring with one another in what would be dubbed the War of the Gods. Circe's plan was to have them kill one another, so the plane of deities would become easy pickings for herself. To ensure that the Amazons would not meddle in her plans, she turned Hippolyta into the aggressive Shim'tar, the equivalent of Wonder Woman as the champion of the lost Bana Mighdall Amazons, and pitted the two tribes against each other, hoping they too would kill each other off. Fortunately, they came to their senses and banded together to defeat Circe and her demonic forces.

Hippolyta rewarded the Bana Mighdall Amazons by allowing them to stay on Themyscira. However, she still harboured animosity towards them from centuries ago when they chose to follow Antiope over her, and was still wary of their overly aggressive principals and lifestyle. So they were kept in a secluded area on the island, and allowed no communication with the Themyscira Amazons. This more visible segregation would breed hate between the two tribes over the years.

After the War of the Gods, Hippolyta was introduced to her daughter Diana's mystical duplicate, Donna Troy. Diana brought her to Themyscira and, hearing about the great hero Troia she had become, like her sister, Hippolyta welcomed her with open arms and even adopted Donna as her own. Not long after, the grown-up and insane Fury came upon the Amazons. She was enraged with jealousy over Diana's place as Hippolyta's precious daughter and tried to kill her. Luckily, she was subdued and, at Hippolyta behest, she stayed on Themyscira to be treated for her mental illness. Regardless, Hippolyta's Amazon family grew in strength with the addition of these two fine warriors.

Things seemed okay for a while, but one day, Hippolyta was overcome by horrible premonitions of Wonder Woman's death, and saw it as a sign from the gods. Fearing for her daughter's safety, she quickly declared a contest for the replacement of Wonder Woman, to Diana's astonishment. Hippolyta rigged the contest so that the Bana Mighdall Amazon named Artemis (not the Greek goddess) would win the contest and take on the Wonder Woman costume. As long as another adopted the Wonder Woman mantle, Hippolyta felt relatively at ease. And as Hippolyta's premonitions urged, Wonder Woman (Artemis) was soon killed in battle against the White Magician. Diana regained the Wonder Woman title and found out about Hippolyta's manipulations, which further exacerbated the animosity between the Themyscira and Bana Mighdall Amazons.

Diana then descended into the Underworld of Hades to rescue Artemis. But with Artemis' resurrection, fate still needed for Wonder Woman to die. In a battle with the demon Neron, Diana was blasted into a coma, and eventual death. Hippolyta was overcome with grief, but accepted the inevitable fate. As the Olympian gods made Diana a goddess by their side, they also made Hippolyta the new Wonder Woman as penance in her manipulations of fate in casting Artemis to die as Wonder Woman. This is when she momentarily travelled back in time to World War II to become the first Wonder Woman known to man.

When Diana was expelled from Olympus for abusing her divinity to help her friends down on Earth, she once more took on the mortal role of Wonder Woman. But Hippolyta was not content with giving up her superhero ways, and so both mother and daughter fought for good in man's world. But with Hippolyta's absence from Paradise Island, she quickly began to lose the respect of the Bana Mighdall Amazons, and even the Themyscira Amazons couldn't justify her neglect of her royal duties as the Queen of the Amazons. Relations between the Themyscira and Bana Mighdall factions crumbled. And every time Hippolyta returned to assert her authority to keep the peace, her word did not have as much impact as it had once before. She was confronted to choose between her role as the Queen of the Amazons or being a superhero. To everyone's surprise, Hippolyta chose the latter as her love for fighting on the frontline made her feel more alive. The Amazon monarchy system was then abolished.

During Imperiex's attempts to destroy Earth, the Amazons became involved in the planet's defense. Hippolyta went up against an Imperiex probe and could hardly contain it all on her own. When Diana came, she prompted her mother to leave, as Imperiex's forces were obviously overwhelming. But Hippolyta remained headstrong, pushed her daughter to safety, and sacrificed herself to defeat the Imperiex probe in an explosion. Hippolyta was not without her faults, but none can dispute that she died a true hero.

While not as powerful as her daughter Diana, Hippolyta was still a very formidable warrior in her own right. She was the original Amazon, and had trained to perfect her physical combat skills for thousands of years. Through her time as the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta gained much wisdom and benevolence. In addition, her experience had blessed her with refined war strategies. Hippolyta often used a sword and shield in battle. Though not blessed with the same god-given powers as her daughter, she used the Gauntlets of Atlas that granted her enhanced strength and for defense, and the Sandals of Hermes for enhanced agility and flight. Hippolyta used a similar armour to her daughter's, though fashioned with the Amazonian symbol of the golden eagle instead of the double "W." She also sported a more conservative skirt instead of her daughter's more revealing costume.

I got a question: we all know that WW's mom is Hippolyta, but who's her dad?

She has no father. She wasn't concieved by normal means - Diana was fashioned out of clay.

And we don't know who the caveman who killed Hippolyta in her previous life is, either.

Ares is the closest she has to a father but yeah, they're Gods. They don't have biological parents :)
