First Appearance: Superman (2nd series) #167
Known Relatives: Kon-El (Superboy II, master), Kal-El (Superman I, former master)
Group Affiliation: Teen Titans
Eyes: Black
Hair: White
Superman was on his family farm when a rocket landed outside the Kent household. Thanks to John Henry and Professor Hamilton, Superman managed to find that the rocket contained a message from Jor-El, his father. Seeing what Krypton was really like, Superman managed to travel with Lois Lane to Krypton using the science of the Phantom Zone. Whilst on Krypton Superman met his parents and a dog which he remembered as being called Krypto. During his stay on Kryptopolis, Superman and Lois had to fight General Zod. After defeating him they returned through the Phantom Zone and discovered that Krypto had tagged along for the journey.
Krypto stayed in Clark and Lois' apartment but frequently grew restless at not being able to 'run free' like he wanted to. He would frequently tear the place up and after one time to many Superman took him out for a fly. During this outing two meta-human criminals escaped from prison thanks to help from their crooked attorney. It was only due to Krypto's assistance that the two were caught.
Krypto next leapt into action when Superman went to address a conflict between the tyrant Mongul and his sister. The two were duelling and Superman brought Krypto as aid in case he couldn't handle the pair. Krypto proved himself almost too well, nearly killing Mongul in his ferocity. Afraid at Krypto's unreliability Superman assigned him to the Fortress of Solitude where one of the robots there was assigned to look after him.
Krypto stayed in the Fortress waiting for Superman's return and was occasionally visited, even travelling through the Phantom Zone to what both he and Superman thought was the real Krypton again only to find it was a scheme of Braniac 13's designed to trap Superman in the Phantom Zone forever. However, a time came when Superman had another use for his faithful canine. Seeing his clone, Kon-El, mature into a more grounded and responsible hero, Superman thought that he would gift the boy a friend and a responsibility. Presenting Krypto to Kon, Superman asked that he look after the dog. Krypto seemed to form an instant bond to his new master although has already shown signs of disobedience. Kon on the other hand sees Krypto as seriously uncool and a distraction he doesn't need.
Krypto has the normal size and strength of an Earth household dog. However, his Kryptonian physiology has affected him the same as Superman's has, turning him into a solar battery and giving him access to super powers when under a yellow sun. Krypto has displayed super speed, super strength and grip with his teeth, invulnerability including his teeth, flight, super hearing beyond that of Superman's and superhuman smelling abilities. It is not known if Krypto is similarly vulnerable to green kryptonite or magic as his previous master was.
