Jesse Chambers was born to Johnny Chambers and Libby Lawrence, secretly the retired 1940s era crimefighters known as Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle, respectively. Hoping that his daughter would take up the path of the costumed hero, Johnny taught Jesse the mathematical formula which he believed gave him greatly enhanced speed. Speaking it aloud, she found that she shared his abilities, though she later disappointed her father by showing little interest in the direction he had intended for her, choosing to continue her education instead.
While Jesse was in the graduate program at Gotham University, the premier heroic team of the 1940s, the Justice Society of America, reemerged, following a long absence. Researching 'The Impact of Superheroes on Society' as her thesis topic, Jesse began furtively following the returning heroes, taking notes on their adventures. Weeks later, Johnny, a longtime ally to the team, asked his daughter to quickly deliver some documents to the JSA, bringing Jesse into direct contact with them. She fought alongside the team during several battles, finally adopting 'Jesse Quick' as a costumed identity of her own, and having her first encounter with fellow speedster, Wally West (The Flash).
Soon after, during a tenuous period in his life, Wally chose Jesse to be his replacement as the Flash, should he fall in battle. She later deduced that his selection of her was part of a plot to force Impulse (his true successor) to take the dynasty more seriously. Feeling betrayed, she still decided to save Wally's life by intercepting a blast aimed for him, which nearly severed her leg. Returning from the mythical Speed Force, Wally used his new abilities to heal Jesse, though she could not completely forgive him for his earlier deception.
Shortly after, Jesse suddenly found herself without her enhanced speed. She immediately blamed Wally, who had recently been deriving his abilities directly from the Speed Force, the otherdimensional plane which empowers all speedsters, whereas she only tapped into its power. Jesse soon discovered that Savitar, a superspeed zealot, had severed her connection to the Speed Force (as well as those of several other speedsters). Wally chose the still depowered Jesse to accompany him to Savitar's mountain lair, and she succeeded in regaining her powers. During the conflict, the again active Johnny Quick sacrificed himself to protect his daughter from attack by one of Savitar's forces. Wally ultimately triumphed over the villain, though Jesse continued to mourn for her fallen father.
Jesse accepted the reins of managing her father's corporation, Quickstart Enterprises, while simultaneously continuing to operate as Jesse Quick, such as when she teamed with several former members of the New Titans to prevent a nuclear attack. When the Titans were later going through a reorganization, Wally, a founding member, selected Jesse to join the roster, hoping to soothe their old wounds. After initially declining the offer, she ultimately joined the Titans, though only served for a brief period before resigning, frustrated by her perceived place on the team.
Persuaded to return to the fold by another founding member, Nightwing, Jesse quickly became embroiled in a murder mystery. Libby Lawrence, Jesse's widowed mother, had become engaged to Philip Geyer, who died under mysterious circumstances. An investigation conducted by the Titans identified his killer, as well as uncovering a previously ongoing affair between Geyer and Jesse, which had contributed to his death. Jesse has attempted to reconcile with her mother, but the saddened Libby has continued to be reluctant to reunite with her. Shortly after this incident, Jesse's version of the Titans permanently disbanded following a decimating attack by a robotic duplicate of Superman.
Following the dissolution of the team, Jesse rededicated herself to her duties at Quickstart Enterprises. When Wally needed assistance defeating an old foe, Jesse lent him a portion of her special abilities, ultimately leaving her completely powerless again. She has since taken a position as business manager for the newly reformed Justice Society of America. Jesse has recently been affected by the disappearance of Rick Tyler, the JSA member known as Hourman, whom she had grown quite close to.
Like her father, Jesse believed that her powers of flight and accelerated speed (roughly half of the speed of light) were the result of the visualization of a specific geometric construct, represented by the equation: 3x2(9YZ)4A. She later learned that her powers were the result of a benevolent link to the Speed Force. In times of extreme stress, Jesse could also exhibit bursts of superhuman strength, much like her mother.
