When Queen Atlanna of Atlantis was seduced by the mysterious sorcerer known as Atlan she gave birth to a son whom she named Orin. However the baby boy was unfortunate enough to be born with blonde hair, a very bad omen to the denizens of Atlantis. Known as the Curse of Kordax, King Trevis feared having the baby around due to this sign and so abandoned Orin on Mercy Reef to die. As the waters receded however, the baby Orin proved to be able to breathe air as well as water and so did not die. Instead he was found by the dolphin Porm and wandered with her pod across the oceans. The dolphins named the baby Swimmer, and he stayed with them until he was a teenager and was found by a kindly lighthouse keeper named Arthur Curry.
Arthur took Swimmer in and taught the boy how to read and speak English. He taught Orin the ways of the surface world and raised the teen as though he were his own son. One day Arthur Curry disappeared, and after not being able to find him, Orin took Arthur's name for himself as a mark of respect and love. From here, he traveled up North where he spent months in the frigid waters avoiding any contact with humans. All that changed one day when he happened upon a young Eskimo woman being attacked by a polar bear. He rescued the woman, named Kako, and went back with her to her tribe. It was then that he had his first meeting with Orm, another son of Atlan by an Eskimo woman. Orm became deeply jealous of Arthur, and set in motion events which would cause Arthur to be driven out of the tribe. Arthur left, unaware that Kako carried his child.
For months afterward Arthur drifted in the seas until he accidentally came upon the city of his birth. He was captured on sight and thrown into the prison camp of the then dictatorial government of Atlantis. While there he befriended a fellow prisoner named Vulko who taught him the language and ways of Atlantis. He also caught glimpses of the woman whom he instinctively knew as his mother through a clear screen separating the male from the female prisoners. When he saw her no more he knew that she was dead. With nothing to keep him in Atlantis, he escaped the prison camps and fled back to the open ocean.
Eventually however he began venturing out on land taking more of an interest in the surface world. These forays into civilization led to a meeting with Barry Allen, the second Flash. It was Flash who gave Arthur the name Aquaman and the media grew to call him a superhero as the two men teamed up. Along with various other heroes including the Martian Manhunter he became a founding member of the Justice League of America. Soon afterwards he returned to Atlantis to find that his own escape had inspired the citizens to rebel and that Atlantis was now a free city. Arthur was recognized as Orin, the son of Queen Atlanna, and so became the King of Atlantis.
As King, Orin slowly reintroduced Atlantis to the outside world and the society flourished. He also took as a wife a disposed queen from another dimension named Mera, whom the subjects quickly grew to love. Mera and Orin had a son named Arthur Jr, and despite some setbacks all seemed to be right for a time.
Then the villain Black Manta kidnapped Orin's young son and succeeded in killing him after Orin had refused to take up the throne again when the Shark had him disposed. The event caused a rift between Orin and Mera, who blamed him for the baby's death. The couple tried to relocate to a flooded city on the East Coast for a time to reconcile. It was during this time that Orin tried to reform the Justice League with him as leader, going in front of the United Nations and disbanding the original league and then creating a new one with new members. However his leadership abilities were rather harsh and didn't sit too well with the young membership at the time so he eventually left this version of the JLA.
By this time Mera had been driven insane by grief and was committed to an Asylum in Atlantis. She escaped and hampered Orin's attempts to save the city from an alien force that had taken it over. Mera left this dimension in a fit of rage and Arthur succeeded in freeing Atlantis. Afterwards he served as its representative to the United Nations for a time before finding out the truth about his birth from the Chronicles of Atlantis and learning that Orm aka Ocean Master was his half-brother.
Spurred back into adventuring, Aquaman soon afterward lost his hand to a school of piranah controlled by an enemy. The event caused him to become delirious, and he lost all sense of diplomacy becoming harsher and more reactionary. He replaced his lost hand with a harpoon, which was lather further replaced by a mentally controlled retractable model by S.T.A.R. labs, and struck up a romance with Dolphin. He also discovered that he had a son named Koryak by his former lover Kako who had just become the latest fire elemental. At the same time, King Thessily of Atlantis was plotting to kill Orin out of jealously for the place Orin still held in the hearts of his former subjects. In the end the King was killed in one of many earthquakes that would send Poseidonis slowly rising to the surface.
Orin returned as Koryak led the citizens of Atlantis to safety. He bonded with a cybernetic entity that the Hunters had left to observe Atlantis. In the process Orin learned of the pending return of the Hunters/Gatherers and so gathered the ocean-dwelling heroes of the world and the citizens of Poseidonis under his banner to fight the threat. The rest of the world had been wooed by the Hunters/Gatherers message of peace, but Aquaman tricked them into revealing their true intentions to the surface world thus forcing them to retreat. It was during this event that Orin reestablished himself as King of Atlantis.
Unfortunetly having a magical heritage started taking a toll on Orin and the stress began taking it's toll on him. His body mutated physically, his skin turning green and his hands becoming webbed. Orin was restored to normal only after the Swamp Thing took him on a vision quest where Orin witnessed the true origin of Kordax. Soon after Orin was forced to battle Triton for dominion over the oceans, during which he was blinded when Poseidon opened his mind to the Clear, the unified life energy field of all ocean life. His sight slowly returned and with the help of Animal Man he discovered he now possessed the ability of echo location.
After several more adventures with the JLA, the group got involved in the Imperiex War. During the event Aquaman was forced to attempt to move himself and his peoplewith the aid of Tempest out of harm's way, but Tempest's spell went awry, and trapped all of them thousands of years in the past. In this period, known as the Obsidian Age, the people of Atlantis became enslaved to ancient sorcerors led by Gamemnae, who turned Orin into a water elemental and kept him prisoner. The rest of the people of Atlantis suffered after her tyrannical rule until the Justice League defeated her and freed Orin. Unfortunetly, to save Atlantis, Orin was forced to resink it. This action caused him to be disposed as king.
Sentenced to death, the oceans and its creatures turned against him, Arthur soon found himself running across a mysterious lake. On the brink of death he collapsed, upon which the servant nymphs of the Lady of the Lake found him and dragged him to their mistress. The Lady restored him to full health and gave him a new hand. This hand, made of mystical water, possesses many strange abilities which Orin is only beginning to discover, among them the ability to heal as was the case when Rodunn attacked him under orders by the new ruling class of Atlantis. After being healed by Arthur's hand, Rodunn realized his mistake and went back to the kingdom to set things right.
At this time, the Lady of the Lake gave to Orin the title of Waterbearer, the protector of the Secret Sea, an uncharted dimensional reservoir. Aquaman was to be a conduit for channeling the healing energy of this mystical place into our dimension. His new hand turned out to be an extension of this Sea. The Lady longed for the world to know of her mystical waters of truth and so she set Aquaman out on the task of doing this for her. Along the way he made new friends in the forms of an old lighthouse keeper named McCaffrey and an agent with the Irish government who called herself Sweeney.
Unfortunetly Aquaman's use of his new waterhand as a weapon unleashed an ancient evil called the Thirst. A golemn composed of dried up Earth, the Thirst had as it's goal the drying up off all of Earth and all life on it. After targeting the river spirits of the world he succeeding in killing the spirits of the river Elbe and Rhine. After the Rhine spirit was killed, Aquaman's hated enemy and the murderor of his young son Black Manta showed up, upon which Arthur used his hand to heal the villain of his autism. After the two chased the Thirst all the way to the last river goddess, whom the Thirst succeeded in drying up, it merged with Aquaman. Going after the Lady of the Lake now, the merged being encountered the troll named Modg who told them that victory may come in surrendering. Heeding his words, Aquaman ceased his struggle with the Thirst awakening the Lady of the Lake and restoring the river goddesses to life. After learning that McCaffery died back at his lighthouse during the battle Aquaman swam back to Atlantis, where Tempest, Vulko, and Rodunn had lead a revolt and succeeded in taking back the kingdom from the corrupt sorcerous class that had taken over since the return from the Obsidian Age.
After a devastating earthquake caused the city of San Diego to fall into the ocean, Arthur has ventured to that area to help the remaining survivors who are now somehow able to breathe underwater.
Aquaman is a born Atlantean who is naturally adapted to an ocean environment, giving him enhanced hearing and strength while on land. He is stronger than both the average human and the average Atlantean due to his mystical heritage. He can breathe both water and air, but must return to the water periodically to maintain his strength levels and vitality.
Aquaman had the ability to communicate telepathically with all marine life including fish, marine mammals, and marine reptiles. Since his mind was opened to the Clear, which can be likened to the Green of the Swamp Thing, he is now linked to the universal consciousness of all sea life enabling him to communicate with sea life even on the other side of the planet. His telepathy also works with nonmarine life to a very limited extent via the parts of their brains that are linked to their ancestoral memories of the ocean.
For a time after his hand was severed, Aquaman possessed a prosthetic engineered by S.T.A.R. labs that could morph into a retractable harpoon. The new water hand given to him by the Lady of the Lake is an extension of the Secret Sea, and has demonstrated abilities such as healing powers and some control over water. There may be other abilities the new hand has that Arthur has yet to discover.
