Terry Sloan was born a child prodigy, blessed with a photographic memory. At the age of eight, he was already an accomplished architect. At twelve, he enrolled at Harvard University, graduating in less than a year. He later mastered many disciplines, receiving advanced degrees in everything from archaeology to psychology. A three-time Olympic medalist, Terry was also a gifted and graceful athlete. He achieved great financial success, but ultimately became frustrated with his effortless achievements.

One night, the boredom had grown too great, and Terry stood on a bridge, ready to take his own life. Before he could jump, Terry was accosted by several youths. He realized that those children had been inspired by criminals to act in that manner, and he choose to become a new source of inspiration. Drawing from the example of the Justice Society of America, Terry became Mr. Terrific, The Man of a Thousand Talents. A firm believer in equal opportunity, he chose to make 'Fair Play' his anthem, insisting that he must share his exceptional gifts in order to help bridge the gap between peoples.

In 1942, President Roosevelt mobilized the costumed heroes of America into one united force, the All-Star Squadron. Among the many gathered crimefighters were Terry and his heroic idols, the membership of the Justice Society of America. A few years later, Terry was actually invited to participate in a mission with the Justice Society, during a period when the team's roster was waning. After the successful completion of this temporal adventure into the history of the nation of Germany, Mr. Terrific was rewarded with reserve status to the team.

Shortly after, in February of 1945, Terry again dealt with a crisis alongside the Justice Society. Stalker, a soulless tyrant, sent his disciples across the globe, and Terry traveled to Germany to assist in stopping them. Witnessing the atrocities inflicted by the Allied bombing on Germany, Terry became enraged by the injustice of attacking the innocent. He expected everyone to live up to his own, unreasonably high standards of morality. The war ended shortly after this, and Terry retired from the costumed life.

Decades later, the Justice Society of America reformed, and Mr. Terrific ended his self-imposed retirement. Terry participated in several missions which brought together the Justice Society with their heroic successors, the Justice League of America, including the rescue of the time-lost 1940s team, the Seven Soldiers of Victory. At a later gathering onboard the JLA satellite, Terry was laconic, leading the other heroes to question his reasons for attending the meeting. After an explosion ripped through the satellite, Terry's corpse was discovered in the wreckage. It was soon determined that he had not perished in the blast, but had in fact been strangled by one of the assembled heroes.

The murderer was revealed to be the Spirit King, an old nemesis of his, who had merged himself with Jay Garrick (The Flash). The other heroes realized that Terry had deduced the presence of the Spirit King at the gathering, and was tightlipped so as not to tip off the villain. In the subsequent battle between the Justice Society and the Spirit King, Terry appeared as a ghost, and delivered the final blow to his murderer. Before fading away, Terry admitted to his former teammates that he had always felt outclassed by their abilities, but now he knew he truly belonged.

Years later, Terry reappeared as a spirit, this time to participate in the instruction of Jack Knight, the son of his former teammate, Starman. Terry revealed that it had been his own vanity that led him to first become a hero, as he believed that he could master any discipline. He also lamented the fact that he was never as successful as others at adventuring, and that insecurity had led to his retirement. Terry advised Jack to never let his own vanity cloud his judgment, and implied the value of that knowledge.

Terry had no superhuman powers, rather possessing a fantastic mastery of all human endeavours. He was a world class in virtually every area of human ability from architecture to athletics to mechanics to medicine. Terry was a gifted strategist and detective and had a genius level intellect.

Thank you, Jon. I hadn't heard about his more recent appearances (though I am getting a little annoyed at the current lax 'dead means dead' rules at DC). :) Could you fill me in on which issues he was in?

Erm... if i had them I could but they're all t home. He is still dead, Terrific II went back in time with Hawkgirl II (i think) and they met Terry and defeated some guy. Terry found out he was going to die but didn't want to know how or why.

Thank you, Jennifer. I was worried that I might have to start raiding back issue bins to find out which issue guest starred the real Mr. Terrific. :) At least, for once, a dead character is staying dead... for now.
