Nathaniel Adam was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. After serving with distinction he was accused of treason despite his protests that he had been framed. Convicted of murder and treason, Adam faced a long jail sentence but was offered an alternative. In order to receive a full Presidential pardon, he enrolled in a secret research project. Adam was ordered to allow scientists to wrap his body in a cocoon made from an alien alloy that had been found in a wreck of a crashed spacecraft. Wishing to test the properties and resilience of the new material, the scientists then placed Adam atop a hydrogen bomb that was detonated. Unsurprisingly, the experiment ended in Adam being utterly vaporised along with the alien alloy. At least this was what the scientists observed. What actually occurred was the creation of two separate entities, both believing themselves to be Nathaniel Adam. The new entity was composed entirely of the alien alloy and, due to the explosion, was transported through a quantum field and rematerialised twenty years in the future. This future Adam had vast atomic based powers derived from the alloy.
With the reappearance of Adam, he was reunited with General Wade Eiling, the man who had originally ordered his court martial and his part in the Captain Atom project. Eiling offered Adam a deal. If he were to operate as a super-powered operative for the United States government, he would be cleared of his earlier offences. If he refused he would be executed. Adam accepted and an elaborate background was weaved for the newly christened Captain Atom. The government provided the public with a new hero that worked for the government and had no connections to the armed forces. Atom then started to use the alias Cameron Scott when he was off duty. The government had given him this identity. When the Justice League decided to branch into a global organisation, the government decided that an inside operative would be incredibly useful, as they would keep the government posted on JLI activities. Captain Atom was ideal for this post and so he was accepted into the League following some US Government persuasion. While with the JLI, Captain Atom was also called upon to command an army comprised of Earth's greatest heroes against the invasion of Earth by the alien race, known as the Dominators. Atom then left to form and lead Justice League Europe.
Eventually Atom left the government's employ and he forged a shaky agreement with Wiling. Atom kept the secret history that the government had provided him for ease and to avoid embarrassment. Atom kept many personal secrets from the League and lied to Blue Beetle in particular, saying that he had worked with the original Blue Beetle. Eventually he managed to solve his framing that had occurred twenty years previous thanks to Beetle, Booster Gold and Mr Miracle. This once and for all cleared his name but the lies he had told the League severely diminished his reputation and respect within the team. Atom was reinstated into the military following his fantastic performance in leading Earth's superhero forces against the Dominators and he was further rewarded with a promotion to major. Atom's military background also proved useful as he led the JLE. While many of his teammates felt resentment and ill will towards him, due to his style of leadership, the team almost always looked to him for a decisive decision. Atom stayed with the JLE through the team's tenure until he was believed to have been killed in an explosion caused by the villain Monarch's bomb.
However, the reality had Atom and Monarch being catapulted into the past. Atom returned eventually through the same quantum fields and arrived in the midst of the Overmaster's attack on the JLI. He was recruited to lead a group called the League Busters against the JLI but revolted against the Overmaster's control. The ensuing altercation led to Atom's teammate Ice dying. Atom returned to League service after this but had a major clash of ideologies with League Chairperson, Wonder Woman. Atom left the League to form his own, reactionary team, named Extreme Justice. While with the team Atom discovered that he was actually a quantum duplicate of the original Nathaniel Adam. The original Adam had been suspended in a void for the past two decades and had honed his powers, taking the name of Monarch. Learning of his true identity, Atom took the name of Cameron Scott permanently and soon met Bette San Souci. Bette had previously been the villainess Plastique and had clased with Stom on numerous occaisions. However, the pair grew to understand each other's capacity for self sacrifice and slowly grew closer before getting married.
Atom remained in an active heroing career, holding reserve status in the JLA and also heading up the loose-knit organisation called L.A.W. This collection of heroes were brought together when the JLA were kidnapped and defended Earth successfully. Atom also worked closely with the United States Government, aiding them on many operations. Atom was also approached by Maxwell Lord with an offer to lead his Superbuddies team. Accepting tentatively, the team had little time to do anything as they were abducted by Roulette and placed in the House, a gladiatorial arena for super heroes to fight to the death while villains bet on the outcome. Facing off against Mary Marvel, Atom was pummelled to within an inch of his life and was seriously close to causing a massive nuclear meltdown. He was taken away to S.T.A.R. Labs where he recovered.
Recently the United States government became aware of a giant Kryptonite asteroid that was headed towards Earth on a collision course. Blown away from the planet's initial destruction, Then-President Luthor saw this as an opportunity to discredit Superman. Making him unfavourable in the public eyes, Luthor declared Superman and Batman as outlaws. Declaring an international state of emergency, Luthor called upon a vast band of heroes to act as police in capturing and bringing Superman and Batman to justice. Atom was chosen to lead this group. Initially Atom was set against the idea and refused the position but soon his loyalty to his country led him to grudgingly accept his position. While the heroes are searching for the two outlaws, Luthor commissioned a giant Superman/Batman robot to be created by the new Toyman, in case more drastic measures were needed to bring the duo to justice. Atom's force caught up with Superman and Batman and while they were fighting, Atom absorbed a huge amount of energy from Major Force. Seemingly dying, instead he was quantum jumped again into the future where he saw the catastrophic consequences of taking out Superman. Returning through time he called off his squad and talked to the outlawed duo. Batman realised that the robot could be used to destroy the asteroid before its collision with Earth but that someone would have to pilot it. Atom persuaded Superman and Batman that he should be the pilot, as they are still needed to uncover Luthor's deceit. Piloting the giant robot, directly into the asteroid, both objects exploded on impact and scattered debris across the planet. Atom however, was not found and is thought to be dead.
While alive Captain Atom had vast powers. To activate his powers he would coat his body in the alien alloy through an act of will. This then gave him a large degree of invulnerability, enhanced strength, anti-gravity powers and the ability to fire atomic blasts. Atom is also able to absorb most forms of energy though can be pushed beyond his limits which results in him quantum jumping through time. Atom is a highly skilled military tactician and pilot. He is also highly skilled at commanding and leading large amounts of people.
