Johnny Thunder was the seventh son of a seventh son. This useless piece of genetic information actually held the key to his entire destiny. Born on July 7th 1917, Johnny was kidnapped seven days after his birth by agents of a sect of sorcerers who took Johnny away to the island of Bhandisia. Johnny was draped with the Zodiac Belt and underwent a series of rituals that bound him to a mystical creature, known only as the Thunderbolt. With this binding, Johnny was intended to be used by the evil wizards in their own vendetta, but Johnny was again stolen by a rival sect. Somehow he was lost by this sect and made his way around the world as a child. Eventually he was found by his father and taken back to the family home.

When Johnny was 22 he stared a job as a window cleaner. Johnny had never managed to hold down jobs, his clumsiness leading to him being fired and his blind luck leading him into new jobs. Unbeknownst to Johnny, he was being observed by a group of agents from the Bhandisian sect that first captured him. Johnny accidentally triggered the genie while he worked by saying the magic words required to conjure it. The words were Cei-U but were pronounced like the English phrase "say you." Johnny found that he had access to a genie that he could command for an hour at a time. The genie appeared to be able to do anything Johnny asked as long as he phrased it correctly. Over time Johnny gained more control over the genie and could use it for extended periods of time. Johnny started to fight crime with the genie but was hindered by the fact he wasn't sure what phrase commanded the genie to appear. Johnny commanded the Thunderbolt to take him to the inaugural meeting of the Justice Society of America. At first Johnny was only the team's mascot, as his clownish attitude prevented the team from taking him seriously. However, when the Flash left the team's roster, Johnny was promoted to full status. Johnny grew with this added responsibility and learnt the command phrase as well as gaining slightly better control of the Thunderbolt. Johnny also started dating Daisy Darling, the daughter of his former boss, and adopted a daughter named Peachy Pet.

When World War II broke out, Johnny was the only Justice Society member to join the United States Navy and wore the uniform for several years more than his teammates. After the war Johnny was more confident in himself and started to use the Thunderbolt less and his own skills more. On one outing he met a criminal named the Black Canary. Falling in love with her, Johnny found out that she was actually a crime fighter, posing as a criminal in order to fool other thieves. Once Johnny realised this Black Canary confessed that she cared for Johnny but had no interest in pursuing a romantic relationship with him. Black Canary joined the JSA, which prompted Johnny to leave. He did have another reason for leaving though as he discovered that he could no longer summon the Thunderbolt. Johnny discovered that this was the work of the evil magicians in Bhandisia, blocking his connection to the Thunderbolt, in the hope that they could re route it to one of their agents. Johnny was kidnapped by the sect and forced to rule the country under their control. Eventually Johnny was rescued by the JSA and he brought down the sorcerers sect, choosing to remain in the country as ruler until a democracy was established.

Eventually the JSA retired due to McCarthyism plaguing the country. Johnny did not use the Thunderbolt at all until years later when the JSA reformed. Johnny was still quite youthful, despite his age, as an earlier adventure had stunted his aging. Johnny was contacted by the JSA and discovered that he could still command the Thunderbolt. However, he chose not to have full time membership and only sporadically helped the group. This may well have been because he still had feelings for Black Canary or because his confidence in himself had faltered. Johnny was however, amongst the JSA when they travelled to Asgard to fight the Twilight of the Gods for all eternity. Rescued two years later, Johnny discovered that his adopted daughter, Peachy Pet, had made a small fortune for herself in the frozen yoghurt business. Johnny also found he no longer had control of the Thunderbolt and that a Bhandisian orphan, named Kiki, was instead controlling it. Kiki was the last true Bhandisian. Johnny took Kiki on as his ward until she grew up and left Johnny with control of the Thunderbolt again.

During the fight with Extant where several JSA members were killed, Johnny was returned to his proper age, negating the effects of the chronal energies that had previously been keeping him young. Johnny immediately became very frail and started to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. Johnny was placed in a nursing home, where his family and the newly formed JSA constantly visited him. At one point
Johnny placed the Thunderbolt into a pen and gave the pen to the Flash for safekeeping. Johnny was aware that the Thunderbolt had great power and could not be his responsibility anymore. However, the Flash lost the pen accidentally and a young boy named Jakeem Williams found it. Jakeem, also known as JJ, found that the pen contained the genie and that he could command the genie with the words so cool. JJ unleashed the genie, which sparked an interdimensional invasion, during which it was found that the Thunderbolt was actually a 5th dimension imp whose real name was Yz. Eventually JJ, along with the JLA and JSA, stopped the invasion and JJ had full ownership of Yz.

Johnny was still in a nursing hospital when he made a startling recovery. Regaining his memory and mobility, if not his age, Johnny went to meet the JSA. The JSA assumed that JJ had managed to cure Johnny inadvertently but when JJ gave the pen containing Yz back to Johnny, the JSA realised they had been fooled. Johnny's body had been taken over by the evil, nazi genius, the Ultra Humanite. Taking control of Yz and using him to make the world in his own twisted ideals, the Ultra Humanite was eventually defeated by a makeshift JSA. However, when reality reverted to how it should be Johnny was left frail and dying. Just before he died, Yz decided to merge with Johnny and the two became one entity living within JJ's pen. Now known as Johnny Thunderbolt, Johnny has all of Yz?s power but his own personality. This means he can use his experience to help JJ make better use of the Thunderbolt's potential.

By himself Johnny's only powers were dumb luck. He eventually became quite a skilled detective and had some hand-to-hand training. Johnny commanded a 5th dimension imp. This meant he could have the imp do literally anything. However, the imp was reliant on Johnny's commands and would follow the literally, much to Johnny's dismay. This often resulted in disastrous instances. As Johnny Thunderbolt, Johnny now has all of this power himself but he now is reliant on JJ's commands. He to is bound to carry out the wishes literally. Johnny presumably resides within the fifth dimension whilst he is within the pen.
