250,000 years ago a scientist named Bertron settled on the planet Krypton. Bertron started to conduct highly immoral experiments with aims of creating the ultimate life form. Finding the harshest region on Krypton, Bertron set up a laboratory beneath the area with a protective dome. This land was barren and plagued by ferocious winds, incredibly hot temperatures and was home to some of the most lethal creatures in the universe. Bertron started his experiments with an infant that was not native to Krypton. Ejecting the baby from the dome, into the area, the creatures immediately tore him to shreds. Bertron managed to gather some tissue samples from the remains and then cloned another infant. This would occur every day for years on end with clones being made from each infants remains. After ten years of experimentation, the infant baby began to evolve. After twenty years the baby had substantially been altered in its physiology. After thirty years the child was able to survive in the environment and could now evade the creatures without being killed for many hours. Years later the baby had evolved to such a point that Bertron named him The Ultimate. For the next two years, The Ultimate hunted outside the protective dome causing the wildlife to become extinct. The Ultimate then returned to the dome to confront the scientists who had tortured him for so many decades. A mindless creature he murdered everyone he could find and was left stranded on the planet. However, The Ultimate managed to happen upon a supply ship which periodically brought supplies to Bertron. Boarding the ship without being noticed, The Ultimate now had access to the stars. Bouncing from world to world and killing anything in his way, The Ultimate soon became known in folk lore as Doomsday

Doomsday's first port of call was on a planet named Bylan 5. Doomsday landed there at a time when a young Darkseid was visiting the planet using Boom Tube time technology. Darkseid was due to wed the princess of the planet in order to secure chemical resources that the planet held for his father. Doomsday's ship crash-landed near Darkseid and the future lord of Apokolips watched as Doomsday killed his supposedly unstoppable friend, Master Mayhem. Darkseid squared off against Doomsday but Doomsday had upset the chemical mines which caused toxic and explosive fumes to enter the atmosphere. Darkseid managed to Boom Tube away from the planet, swearing his aide to secrecy about the fact he had fled a foe. Doomsday left the exploding planet on board the Apokoliptian shuttle, destroying the craft and being sent hurtling through space.

Doomsday's next recorded act of destruction came when he landed on the planet Khund. This world was in the midst of a civil war between the dominant houses of Ebon and Krimsn. Doomsday proceeded to wreak havoc on the planet, killing most of its population. The leader of the house of Ebon was a Khund named Kobald. He decided to send Doomsday off their planet in a rocket ship. Fighting Doomsday with incredibly strong armour, he lured Doomsday onto the rocket where they were both blasted into space, Kobald being the first Khundian to do so. Looking back at his home world before he died, Kobald implored the houses to settle their differences and become the major galactic power that they could be and eventually were.

Doomsday exploded this rocket too and landed on a planet near to Krypton. The Green Lantern for that sector was named Zharan Pel. Pel found an armada of ships, carrying refugees from the planet Doomsday had landed on. Journeying to the planet's surface, Pel battled Doomsday and managed to imprison him within a cell of green energy. However, while he was contacting the Guardians for assistance in permanently containing Doomsday, his concentration slipped and Doomsday broke free, killing the Green Lantern and taking his power ring. Armed with the most powerful weapon in the universe, Doomsday headed into space where the entire Green Lantern Corps were alerted to his menace. Wave after wave of Lanterns were extinguished in battling Doomsday and eventually Doomsday landed on Oa, home planet of the Guardians of the Universe. Doomsday landed on Oa near a mountain that was by the Central Power Battery, source of power for the Green Lantern rings. Doomsday was confronted by one of the Guardians before he acted to take the power of the battery for himself. The Guardian engaged Doomsday in battle and only triumphed by unleashing the totalities of his energies. Even though this would resulting his death, the Guardian made the sacrifice and the resulting explosion seemed to destroy both Doomsday and the mountain he was standing on. In reality, Doomsday had instead been thrown through a hole in space, from which he emerged thousands of light years away.

Eventually Doomsday landed on the planet Calaton. This world was a near utopia, high on ideals. However, within three years Doomsday had destroyed everything and everyone save the capital city. During this time the royal scientists had developed a method of harnessing the metahuman abilities of the monarchy into one body. Gathering all the members of the King's family, the energies within them were drained and placed within a containment vessel known as The Radiant. The Radiant was a being of pure energy and engaged Doomsday in a battle that lasted over a week. Finally the monster fell to a blast of energy that laid waste to a fifth of the planet's surface. After chaining and cloaking Doomsday, the royal family sent the monster into space in a container, where it floated for 245,000 years before becoming entangled in an asteroid field and then falling to Earth where it became buried underground.

Doomsday eventually managed to emerge from within the capsule and smashed his way to the surface of the planet. Picking up the scent of a Kryptonian, Doomsday began a non-stop trail of destruction to find Superman. Cutting a clear line through anything in his path, Doomsday was eventually confronted by the Justice League of America. However, Doomsday managed to weather the combined force of the League, even withstanding the combined energies of Ice, Fire, Bloodwynd, Guy Gardner, Booster Gold and Maxima. All this served to do was remove his outer clothing. Doomsday proceeded to hospitalise Blue Beetle and damaged Booster Gold's suit beyond repair. Superman heard of the League?s defeat and fled to join the fight. Eventually the two titans ended up in Metropolis where Supergirl and Guardian briefly aided Superman. At the end of the battle though both Doomsday and Superman struck fatal blows, and the two giants fell dead.

Doomsday's body was taken by Project Cadmus who wanted to test him However, the cyborg replacement Supermen that had appeared following the death of the original Superman, took Doomsday's body, strapped it to an asteroid and threw it into outer space with a small device planted on his body.

Superman eventually came back to life and started to search for Doomsday's origins. During a meeting of his future selves Superman was warned by Waverider that his rash actions could lead to the apocalypse. In another part of the universe, Doomsday had just crash-landed on Apokolips, causing his usual level of destruction and mayhem. Desaad, an aide to Darkseid, attempted to alert the JLA, specifically its New Gods members so that they might aid Apokolips. Superman heard the call and came to Apokolips only to see Doomsday standing over a defeated Darkseid. Before Superman could stop Doomsday once and for all, the creature was teleported off Apokolips by Desaad using a Boom Tube as a last resort. Doomsday emerged on Calaton where he once again fought the Radiant. This time though Doomsday had grown stronger and evolved past the Radiant's level of power. Superman and Waverider managed to land on the planet, minutes after Radiant had been defeated. Powered by a mother box and using Waverider's technologies, Superman engaged Doomsday again. Eventually he managed to beat the creature by transporting him to the end of time using Waverider's time travel device.

However, Doomsday would return when the events of Zero Hour allowed an ally of Brainiac to travel to the end of time and collect Doomsday. Brainiac used his immense telepathy to take control of the mindless beast. Brainiac was unable to totally destroy Doomsday's mind but took control of it instead. Brainiac needed a body that had no mind within and so sought to take control of Pete Ross' newly born child. Ross was at odds with Superman over his relationship with Ross' wife, Lana Lang. However, the two joined forces to defeat Brainiac as Doomsday ejected him from his mind. Doomsday was then tricked by Superman into entering a transporter, which held him in perpetual transportation between four booths so that Doomsday was never truly whole, and could neither escape nor think.

Superman later freed Doomsday on presidential orders. With the threat of Imperiex looming, President Luthor ordered Superman to use Doomsday as a weapon against Imperiex. Doomsday held his own against the Imperiex probes but Imperiex himself then appeared and destroyed Doomsday with a blast of energy that reduced him to a skeleton. The government then secretly took Doomsday's skeleton and his body was regrown under the Pentagon. However, Joker managed to break into the establishment and expose Doomsday to his joker toxin. Doomsday proceeded to smash his way straight to the White House where he fought Superman. Once again his containment suit was ripped off but this time the affects of the Joker toxin could be seen as Doomsday had been given a form of intelligence. As a sentient being, Doomsday decided not to go after Superman but instead after Luthor, as he was responsible for his last death. However, Superman played on Doomsday's new intellect by instilling fear into the creature. Knocking him out at the end of a drawn out fight, Superman believed Doomsday to have been placed into the government's control. However, Luthor traded Doomsday to Darkseid as payment of a war debt between the two tyrants. Darkseid journeyed to Apokolips with Doomsday in tow. What fate awaits the behemoth there is unknown.

Doomsday has a huge level of strength and invulnerability. His strength may well surpass that of Darkseid or Superman and he can withstand a direct hit from Darkseid's Omega Beams. While Doomsday can be killed, he will always come back to life, immune and stronger than whatever previously killed him. Doomsday could well become the strongest thing in existence and the exact limits of his evolutions are not known. Previously Doomsday was highly resistant to mental assaults as his mind was more instinct and rage than thought. Now he has a level of intelligence it should be easier to attack him mentally but still not simple.
