Freddy Freeman was a normal kid who grew up leading a normal life. One day he was on a routine fishing trip with his grandfather, when the boat they were in was attacked by a wayward shot from the villainous Captain Nazi. Nazi was fighting Captain Marvel and his sister Mary Marvel. During the battle a blow from Captain Nazi crippled Freddy and his grandfather was killed.
Hospitalised, Freddy was near death and was watched over by Billy and Mary Batson, the alter egos of the Marvels. Both knew Freddy from a spelling bee contest that Mary and Freddy were scheduled to take part it on Billy's radio show. The twins decided to try to help Freddy whatever way they could and they travelled to the Rock of Eternity, home to the wizard Shazam who granted the duo their powers. The twins pleaded with Shazam to let them share some of their power with Freddy in order to restore him to health. Shazam said that he couldn't do so with his own power. Billy realised that this was a cryptic clue and that the onus was on the twins to help Freddy. Giving him a portion of their own power, the twins enabled Freddy to become Captain Marvel Junior by saying the words Captain Marvel.
Freddy had numerous adventures within Fawcett City alongside his fellow Marvels. He fought frequently against Captain Nazi. However, Freddy started to refer to himself as CM3. This was due to the fact that when he was in his Captain Marvel Junior persona, he could not tell anyone his name, as he would transform back to Freddy Freeman.
When a teen-aged Atom formed a new Teen Titans, CM3 came to their assistance in rescuing Supergirl and the half-alien Fringe from The Veil, a sinister organisation, bent on wiping out anyone on Earth without alien blood. CM3 decided to stay with the group after this encounter and saw his team mate, Joto, die. After this the team was officially disbanded but remained together without their corporate backing. The team was reformed by Argent who held a membership drive. During this CM3 attended and was amongst the heroes who were attacked by the Veil. CM3 impressed everyone in the battle and the Titans soon gave him official membership along with Fringe. During his time on the team CM3 developed a crush on Argent and, while the feelings were reciprocated, the couple went on a date that was ruined by an attack on the pair and the relationship never continued.
The team fought against the alien race called the H'San Natall as well as the Veil and during one encounter discovered that Joto was alive. After rescuing him the team decided to go their separate ways and disbanded. CM3 headed back to Fawcett.
CM3 again aided the Titans during the Technis Imperative when the Titans came up against the JLA in aiding their former colleague Victor Stone. Freddy also attended a recent membership drive held by Beast Boy's cousin Matt Logan. A motley crew of former Titans decided to band together as Titans West, later renaming themselves titans L.A. However, apart from their first adventure the team saw little action and was disbanded as no one showed any real devotion to the team. CM3 returned again to Fawcett where he continued to adventure alongside his family.
Freddy was again called to help a fledging team when the latest group of young heroes calling themselves the Outsiders went up against a newly revived Sabbac. Sabbac was a demonic enemy from CM3's past and it fell to Freddy to defeat the new threat. Freddy did not join this team though and returned to Fawcett where he awaits his next big adventure.
Freddy is the most impetuous of the Marvel family and is not as naieve or traditional in his outlook on life. He has also grown immensely close to Mary Marvel and the two are currently dating. CM3 gains his powers from Shazam's lightning. When he says the words Captain Marvel, a magical lightning bolt hits him, causing no damage to him, and gives him a third share of the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, courage of Achilles, power of Zeus, stamina of Atlas and speed of Mercury. He shares this power with Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel. However, when the other two are not using their power CM3 receives the full share. Similarly if only one of the other two are using the power then he receives a half share.
