In the years prior to World War II, Dave Clark worked as a radio announcer, reading news copy for UXAM in New York City. One night, another employee had called in sick, and Dave agreed to provide the narration for an action serial named Midnight, which centered around a fictional vigilante. While driving home that evening, he witnessed a twelve-story building collapsing, and rushed to aid the wounded. After two hours of assisting rescue workers, the firemen finally forced Dave to stop. As he departed the site, Dave picked up a discarded hunk of concrete, which had been part of the building. After having the material tested, Dave found that it was mostly made of sand, with not enough concrete included to provide proper support.

Dave learned that Morris Carleton, owner of Carleton Construction, had built the building, and recalled from his news broadcast that Carleton was throwing a gala that evening at his penthouse to celebrate completion of his newest project, the Tri-State Dam. Choosing to disguise himself, Dave put on a domino mask, just as the character Midnight did in his serial. At the stroke of midnight, Dave swung into the penthouse party, and quickly dispatched of Carleton's armed guards. He then collected cash from Carleton and the other revelers, announcing that the money would be used to cover the medical expenses of the tenants who had been wounded in the building collapse.

Now calling himself 'Midnight', Dave rushed the money to the hospital, where he was ambushed and rendered unconscious by the two armed men working for Carleton. Dave awoke to find himself suspended just above the water line of the Tri-State Dam, during a vicious storm. He managed to free himself, but saw cracks beginning to form in the dam, from the strain of the rising river. Dave hurried to the nearest radio station, and warned those who lived in the shadow of the dam of the impending danger. The dam did break, but most escaped the devastation unharmed thanks to that warning.

Carleton tried to flee with his ten million dollar profit from the construction of the dam, but Dave swung into his office before he could make his escape. In the ensuing melee, Dave accidentally killed the two armed guards, and then cajoled Carleton into confessing to his crimes. The police arrested Carleton, and Midnight vanished with the ten million dollars, which he later gave to the state, to aid in flood relief and the construction of a new dam. From this point on, Dave continued to operate as the New York-based crimefighter known as Midnight.

Years later, in February of 1942, Midnight, while working with the diminutive superhero known as Doll Man, discovered an Axis plot to attack the mainland United States. While attempting to flee with the information, Doll Man was blasted by the Nazi agent known as Baron Blitzkrieg, and Dave was forced to carry his tiny form to safety. He led the German forces on a chase through the streets of Manhattan, before making his way onto a speeding subway car. Onboard, Dave was shot by the Nazi soldiers, and, during the conflict, a dropped grenade exploded, derailing the entire train. Dave survived the explosion, and brought the still unconscious Doll Man to the headquarters of the assembled heroes of the All-Star Squadron.

When his wounds had been adequately treated, Midnight warned the other heroes of the coming Japanese attack. He volunteered to assist the Squadron in derailing the invasion, but was rebuffed due to his still-weakened condition. However, after he had sufficiently healed from his injuries, Dave joined the All-Star Squadron, and served with them until their dissolution, in the months following the end of World War II.

After the war, Midnight began working with an eccentric, absent-minded inventor who called himself 'Doc Wackey', and his talking pet monkey, Gabby. The Doc designed several pieces of equipment for Dave to use in his adventures, including the Bubblegun, which would fire a stream of bubbles capable of knocking an assailant down.

Decades later, another hero calling himself Midnight would debut, but his connection to his predecessor (if any) and the current status of Dave Clark, are both unknown.

Midnight had no special powers, but he did have extensive experience with acrobatics and hand-to-hand combat. During the Depression, Dave had traveled across the country, making his living as a bareknuckle boxer, so he utilized those pugilistic skills as Midnight. In costume, Dave would use his talents as a radio actor to disguise his voice.
