Mick Rory was growing up as a normal, unremarkable child. On a school field trip this changed. The class went to a meatpacking plant and the group left Mick behind. Wandering around he was accidentally locked in a meat freezer. Mick nearly froze to death before he was rescued but his experience left him cryophobic, afraid of all cold. This led him to lead a lifestyle of the extreme opposite. Finding an affinity with fire, Mick worked for a time as a fire-eater and then later as a firefighter. Mick tired of his lifestyle though and so used his fondness of fire to help him invent a hand sized flamethrower gun and an asbestos suit. Using these weapons, Mick took the name Heat Wave and began to commit a series of robberies. Based in Central City, it was not long until Mick came up against the Flash, at this time Barry Allen.

Heat Wave was repeatedly thwarted by the Flash in his crimes and so joined with several other villains in the Rogues Gallery. Heat Wave was still beaten by the Flash even with the assistance of his comrades. Heat Wave also developed an intense rivalry with fellow rogue, Captain Cold. With time, the Rogues spent less time trying to commit robberies and more time trying to get one up on the Flash. However, when Barry Allen died saving all of reality from a vast crisis the Rogues realised that they had lost their passion for crime. Without their old adversary it wasn't the same, despite a new Flash emerging. Heat Wave had some confrontations against the new Flash and also Green Lantern and Green Arrow but soon grew tired of a life of crime.

In semi-retirement, Abra Kadabra, the 64th century time traveller who used gadgets from his time to appear to be magical, contacted Heat Wave about taking part in a plan that would establish the Rogues as something more than has-beens. Promising to catapult them into infamy, Abra Kadabra ordered the Rogues to conduct a specific ritual with artefacts they had stolen. However, the Rogues did not realise that this ritual would actually call forth the demon Neron, who killed the Rogues as his first act.

Heat Wave returned when Neron animated his body, along with the other Rogues, in an attack against the Flash in Central City. Heat Wave had vastly enhanced powers and an avatar of flame to aid him. Flash managed to trick Neron into repairing the damage caused and restore the Rogues' souls to their bodies. Heat Wave saw this as an opportunity to retire. However, he was later called back into a life of crime by his fellow Rogues. This time the Rogues were searching for a Zhutanian religious artefact, designed to protect them from Neron's power. Vastly out classed, the Rogues were rescued by their sometime ally the Trickster, who convinced Neron into leaving them be. Heat Wave then saw another reprieve in his life and so left the Rogues to join the Zhutanian monks, hoping to make amends for his criminal ways and avoid another trip to Hell. After leaving the monks, Mick has retired the Heat Wave persona and has worked for Project Cadmus as an agent. After leaving Cadmus, Mick has left for the Quad City area in Illinois.

Rory was hired by the F.B.I. to help them apprehend the psychopath Murmur, and was equipped with new equipment but it appears to have the same effects. However, recently the insane villain the Top has alluded to Heat Wave having a secret that could blow the Rogues apart. However, the Top is insane and cannot remember what this secret is.

Heat Wave is highly knowledgeable in the mechanics of fire. His time as a firefighter helped him see how to effectively generate and control fire. Using his hand-held flamethrower, Heat Wave can shoot concentrated bursts of flame or wide area fire. His fire is extremely hot and can melt almost all metals. He wore an asbestos suit that protected him from his flames. Heat Wave had no metahuman control over the flames once they left the flamethrower.

His name is sometimes written as 'Heatwave', and that's the way I prefer it, but it's more commonly 'Heat Wave'. Just FYI.
