David Knight wanted to be a hero. His father was Starman, and that’s all David wanted. When his father disappeared, David thought this was his shot to be Starman. But Will Payton stepped in. David donned his father’s costume, and confronted Payton, but Payton proved to be a competent hero, and David stepped down. After Payton’s death, Ted, the original Starman, had returned and taken up the roll. But when Ted was aged in the JSA’s battle with Extant, David got his chance. And he was Starman. For about two weeks, and then was shot dead by Kyle, the son of his father’s arch-nemesis, the Mist.
But David Knight’s story didn’t end there. Shortly afterwards, he appeared to Jack, his brother, the reluctant next Starman, brought him into the twilight world between life and death, and the two of them fought, exorcising the demons of their relationship. He was acting mysteriously, saying there were things he couldn’t tell Jack, and being friendlier in death then he’d ever been in life. The next year he appeared, and took Jack on a sea voyage and gave Jack some time with their mother, who had passed away. The next year, David introduced Jack to many of his new friends, heroes of the 40s. The next two visits were not to Jack, but to Mikaal Tomas, the alien third Starman, who David helped coax out his shell and reignite his heroes flame. David’s final visit to Jack was after the massive battle between Jack and Simon Culp’s band of villains. David brought the recently passed on Ted Knight, and the three men shared reminiscences. And it was revealed how David had been coming back: coupled with a magic spell cast over all Opal, David had help from the spirit of Kent Nelson, the first modern Dr. Fate, who helped David. And there was one last surprise.
Jack was returned not to modern Opal, but to the Opal of 1951, the year of the mythic Starman of a year and a day, and found out his identity: David. The same magic that allowed David to see Jack after death had cast him back in time a moment before the fatal bullet struck. David had taken the mantle of Starman from Charles McNider, the first Dr. Mid-Nite, who had taken up the mantle with Ted Knight incapacitated by a nervous breakdown. David and Jack shared an adventure, a battle with the Mist, and Jack told David everything about his future. This was why David knew all about Jack when he appeared to him, and why he felt so differently about Jack. The two Starmen saw their father in his prime, and, with the help of Rex Tyler, Hourman, they foiled the Mist. David and Jack retired to David’s hideout, and shared a beer as 1951 ended. His work done, David faded back to the present, where he could die peacefully, having been the hero for one brief year.
As the Starman of the present, David wielded the Cosmic Rod, the weapon of Starman, that allows flight, the casting of energy blasts, and creating protective force fields. As the Starman of 1951, he wore a costume that incorporated the same technology, giving him the same powers.
