In December of 1941, vulcanologist Danette Reilly was investigating a volcanic island, which had suddenly appeared in the seas north of Hawaii. Her brother, Navy Ensign Rod Reilly, arrived in an attempt to dissuade her from remaining at such a potentially dangerous location, but had to depart quickly for his post at Pearl Harbor. An hour later, Sir Justin, the time displaced Shining Knight, noticed Danette's encampment while flying over the island, and joined her in her investigations. The pair soon shared an adventure with the fledging All-Star Squadron, battling the temporal villain Per Degaton, but manipulations in the time stream later erased all remembrance of the conflict. Though Danette could no longer recall it, during the battle she had been bathed in a mystical blast and then fallen into a pool of lava, only to emerge unharmed, save for a slight fever.

After learning that Pearl Harbor had been attacked by the Japanese military, the All-Stars rushed to Hawaii, with Danette in tow. She hurried to the Naval base, only to find her brother comatose from injuries he had sustained during the surprise assault. 'Slugger' Dunn, a close friend of Rod, related to her what had transpired, and gave her a key, which Rod had instructed him to pass to Danette, should anything happen to him. Danette, and several Squadron members, traveled to Rod's Manhattan penthouse, where she finally fell ill from her mysterious fever. Shining Knight was among the heroes who spent the evening watching over her.

Late that night, Danette awoke, and quietly poked around her brother's home, until she discovered that the mysterious key unlocked a secret door. Inside was a photograph of the crimefighter known as Firebrand in action, as well as two costumes which matched his and a note from her brother. Danette immediately concluded that Rod was Firebrand, and the letter confirmed that he had wanted her to know his secret in the event of his death. She tried on his costume, along with a spare swimsuit she had previously left at his apartment, and found that it fit her perfectly.

Again overwhelmed by fever, she quickly became surrounded by an aura of fire, shooting flames wherever she pointed. Alerted by her screams, the All-Stars rushed in and doused the flames, only to find her once again unharmed. Realizing that she now had special abilities, Danette took on her brother's codename as a tribute to him, and was soon invited to join the team. Rod would come out of his coma months later, and share the Firebrand name with his sister for a time.

In February of 1942, the Squadron clashed with a radiation-charged villain who called himself Cyclotron. Soon after, he smashed his way into the home of Danette and kidnapped her after a prolonged assault. Cyclotron revealed himself to be scientist Terrence Curtis, whom she had been engaged to years earlier. Danette saw Terry as a traitor, but in truth, he was serving the criminal mastermind known as the Ultra-Humanite in order to save the life of his infant daughter. Terry eventually turned against his master, perishing in his battle with Ultra, and Danette became godmother to his daughter, Terri Curtis. (Many years later, Terri would be mother to Albert Rothstein, the JSA member known as Atom-Smasher.)

While with the Squadron, Danette grew very close to Sir Justin, and the two began a relationship which was cut very short, when the Knight was asked to serve as bodyguard for Winston Churchill, prime minister of his native England. Following this, she had a series of flirtations with her other male teammates, including a brief relationship with Rex Tyler (Hourman), before finally swearing off romance with any other All-Stars. Her and Justin intimately reunited in June of 1942, when a joint address by Churchill and President Roosevelt brought the pair back together. Unfortunately, they were again separated when, in October of 1948, Shining Knight was lost in the time, not to return for several decades.

Very little is known about the activities of Danette, following the end of World War II, when the All-Star Squadron disbanded. Recently, Shining Knight insinuated that she had been killed by the Japanese warlord known as the Dragon King, but that yet to be confirmed.

Firebrand possessed the ability to generate and direct plumes of flame from her body. She had an immunity to fire, and could also absorb the heat of flames into herself. With much practice, she learned that should could surround herself with an aura of flame, and fly on a stream of heated air. Her enhanced metabolism kept her warm, even underwater. Through some unknown means, her costume absorbed her immunity to fire as well.
