Bette Kane was a stunningly attractive child who won countless beauty contests before she could even walk unaided. Constantly receiving adulation and being fiercely competitive, she sought out other fields where she could excel and receive praise. This led her to becoming exceptionally talented in tennis, gymnastic and swimming, all sports where she could soak up the cheers of her adoring audience. However, this adulation hid the fact that Bette was losing friends rapidly. Her few friends were dwindling as they found it harder to deal with her constant competitive nature.
Bette realised that she needed a new challenge and new peers. Seeing herself as something special amongst teenagers, she set out to find the teen wonder known as Robin. Her first contact with Robin had come when she entered a Gotham City beauty pageant. When she saw a person her age, risking his life to defend others using just their natural skills she became besotted with Robin. Developing a strong crush she would send fan mail to the Boy Wonder and crafted a Robin suit for herself. However, she never let anyone know her secret desire to be a vigilante until she was ready to unveil her own persona, Flamebird. She developed her own fighting technique based around her Olympic level skills and talents. This coupled with her natural flamboyance made Flamebird a very different persona from Robin.
Flamebird begun her career around California, stopping street crimes and staying to pose for pictures and garner more praise and publicity. However, she never managed to attract Robin to California where she hoped to meet him. Bette grew frustrated and threw herself back into her school life, temporarily retiring the Flamebird persona. Bette had previously ignored her book work in favour of her athletics but managed to turn her grades around and graduated near the top of her class. Ignoring college to continue with her tennis career, Bette made a stunning comeback, earning a world number one ranking at the age of eighteen. However, she soon grew bored and realised that her tennis was nothing compared to the excitement of being Flamebird.
While on the ATP tour she came up with a plan to attract Robin once more. The Boy Wonder had recently been seen as part of the Teen Titans group and so Flamebird decided to set up her own Titans team. Setting out with her typical zeal, she stalked and recruited as many young west-coast super heroes to her new Titans West team. However, the team’s tenure was short as personal differences and long distance commutes proved too much for the fledgling group. However, during their brief life they did meet the Teen Titans. However, Flamebird was let down when finally meeting her idol. Disappointed but not turned off, Flamebird used the brief meeting as an excuse to keep regular contact with Robin, who had told her he was Dick Grayson.
Flamebird then concentrated on California crime and only came to the attention of the Titans again during the Technis Imperative where she was recalled along with all former Titans to help save a former team mate from the Justice League of America. After the crisis, Nightwing planned to reform the Titans and Flamebird waited longingly for the call to join the team. Her housemate saw her futile wait for acceptance as pathetic. Flamebird again retreated to the safety of California and stayed tackling small crime. However, after a recent confrontation with Nightwing, Flamebird was forced to look at herself in a different light. Dick told Flamebird that he was flattered that he had inspired her but that she wasn’t cut out for the vigilante life anywhere but California where she was safer. Bette was crushed at this examination and a knew fire started to burn inside her. Feeling more heroic than ever she redesigned her costume and took a more serious outlook on her crime fighting. Looking to help other vigilantes and heroes who needed confidence, Flamebird transformed into a tutor and role model for many young heroes. Continuing her new found drive into her social life she enrolled at UCLA where she majors in sports medicine. During her time at UCLA she also helped Beat Boy solve a particularly tricky case. She pushed him to form Titans West again but he remained apprehensive.
Recently though Beast Boys’ cousin Matt held a membership party for a new Titans West. After defeating a jealous Duela Dent and the pair of Fear and Loathing, the team remained together with Beast Boy as leader and took the name Titans L.A. While the membership was enormous, the team was short lived. Beast Boy found that no one had any real devotion to the team except him and Flamebird and when the DEO orphans declined an offer of membership from Flamebird, the Titans L.A. disbanded.
Flamebird is an Olympic level gymnast and athlete. She is extremely skilled at tennis, swimming and gymnastics as well as being trained in several forms of martial arts, particularly kickboxing. Flamebird carries a utility belt containing countless gadgets and tricks. Flamebird recently revamped her costume to include electrifying bolas, gloves with electrical charges in, tracking devices built into her goggles and flare emitting contact lenses. Flamebird has become much more motivated and skilled and is currently one of the most underrated vigilantes active.
