Lorraine Reilly was born the daughter of New York's junior senator, Walter Reilly. The family moved to Washington and it was here that Lorraine's life changed. Her father was threatened by Martin Hewitt, who headed up a nuclear research company. Hewitt wanted to gain a monopoly on his branch of research and so started to use criminal methods to ensure his success. Hiring the thug, Multiplex, Hewitt threatened Reilly and then kidnapped Lorraine. Holding Lorraine captive, he intended to blackmail her father into allowing him to construct a monopoly. He subjected Lorraine to a series of experiments in order to replicate the hero Firestorm. The experiments were successful and managed to transform Lorraine into Firehawk. They also made her mind become totally open to Hewitt's orders which she followed without question. Firestorm confronted Firehawk managing to subdue her. Unknown to both the young heroes, their alter egos, Lorraine and Ronnie Raymond, were close friends.
Lorraine was freed from the influence of Hewitt and brought him to justice with Ronnie's help. She was then a reluctant super hero, helping Ronnie out from time to time. She then went to Pittsburgh with Ronnie to study and Vandemeer University. When Ronnie began to go through a serious evolution in his body's make up, Firehawk was pulled even closer to him as the too shared a bond through their powers. It was Firehawk who kept Firestorm's link to humanity.
In time the Sunderland Corp., formed a super group known as the Captains of Industry. Firehawk accepted membership to the group which was a covert team made of mercenaries and criminals. Firehawk joined after the team became affiliated with the Institute for Meta-Human Studies. When Firehawk became administrative assistant at the IMHS, she found the team were legitimate but the team soon dissolved afterwards.
Eventually Firestorm began to evolve into his true form as the fire elemental for Earth. When Martin Stein flew to fight Brimstone alone, Firehawk lent him her power, leaving her drained. Falling to Earth she was rescued and kept in hospital until she recovered. Her life begun anew, a silver lining appeared in the returning Ronnie Raymond. Now they both had lost their powers they resumed a romance that seemed lasting, though juvenile.
Lorraine took a job at S.T.A.R. Labs where she worked for a time. However, when the villain Parasite attacked the complex, Lorraine found that her powers hadn't actually left her and she defeated him. Firehawk went back to IMHS to work and used her powers only when needed. Her relationship with Ronnie ended sometime after his contraction of leukaemia. Firehawk has since been offered membership of the JLA on a reservist basis and takes lectures from the Atom in honing her powers. She also has a casual flirtation with Booster Gold. Recently, Firehawk went out on patrol with Elongated Man and transported him to his house when news of Sue Dibny's death reached them.
Firehawk is a human capable of commanding nuclear forces on a molecular level. These forces can be transformed into heat which has a variety of uses. She can create enough energy to melt most materials and metals, make nearby objects spontaneously combust with a thought and create wings of blue flame that enable her to fly. Her fire also acts as a shield surrounding her body. While she is in Firehawk mode, Lorraine put out parts of her body and so if she touches anything as Firehawk she would cause it to burn or melt.
