First appearance: Detective Comics # 523
Known Relatives: Unnamed aunt
Major enemies: Batman, Robin III, Bane
Height:6’5’’
Weight: 268 lbs.
Eyes: Red
Hair: None
The deck was stacked against Waylon Jones from the day he was born. His mother died in child birth, and he was shipped off to live with his alcoholic aunt. She abused and neglected him, and this only got worse as his skin condition manifested in early childhood. It seems that Waylon’s skin began to take on a greenish tint, and become hard and course, like that of a lizard.
Waylon was picked on by all his peers, and he began to fight and take part in petty crimes. He was not terribly competent, and spent most of his adolescence in and out of juvenile hall. After getting out of juvie, he committed another crime and was sent to jail. After being released, he found his way to a sideshow, where he became an alligator wrestler and was dubbed “Killer Croc.”
After a time with the circus, Croc decided to return to crime, and went where criminals like him could get into the underworld: Gotham City. Croc started working as an enforcer for a mob moss named the Squid. People underestimated Croc, thinking he was stupid. He was much more clever then they expected, and when the Squid made a play for control of the Gotham mobs, Croc killed him and took his place. Croc’s time was short lived, as he was not as clever as he thought, and after running afoul of Batman, he was dethroned, and cast into the sewers of Gotham.
Croc stayed in the Gotham underbelly, surviving alone, his mind beginning to slip away.. Eventually he resurfaced and went on a rampage and was stopped by Bane. Trying to prove his strength, Bane beat Croc, breaking his arms. Croc was sent to Arkham Asylum where he was freed by the Bane orchestrated breakout. He sought out Bane again, and was beaten. He escaped Bane this time, and was eventually taken into custody during Dick Grayson’s brief tenure as Batman.
During this incarceration at Arkham, it was revealed that Croc was slowly de-evolving, losing his mind and becoming more and more animalistic. He was able to escape Arkham Asylum, and fled to the Louisiana Bayou, where he encountered Swamp Thing. He was left there in Swamp Thing’s custody, but he eventually returned to Gotham.
He was in the city when No Man’s Land was declared, and while inside decided to try to make himself a crime boss again. His mind was not ready for that, and initially he set up an ultimate fighting type tournament where he was beaten be Batman, and was then taken down by Robin. Next he was one of the villains affected by Joker Toxin during the Joker's attempts to Jokerize villains around the world, and nearly killed Robin under it’s influence.
Most recently, Croc slid much farther down the evolutionary scale looking less human and acting more animal. It was revealed he was infected with something by the Riddler and Hush, causing this so they could use him as part of their plan. Croc was given a cure, and wound up going farther back, appearing and acting more like he was during his time working for the Squid. He has become a hitman again, and is working again in Gotham’s underworld.
Killer Croc is stronger the average person, although his strength is not quite into the superhuman range. He has a rough hide that makes him much harder to wound then the average person. Depending on where he is in his evolutionary scale, he sometimes has natural fangs, and sometimes has his teeth filed or capped.
