Dan Cassidy was a hard worker who became one of the world's leading stunt men and special effects artists. He was sought after by many Hollywood directors, but his career changed when he accepted a job on the film Blue Devil, working under director Marla Bloom. Dan created a costume for his role as stunt double for the title character, a suit that contained an exoskeleton, granting Dan enhanced strength and agility, thus removing the need for camera trick shots.
Shooting on location on the Caribbean Island of Ile Du Diable, Dan watched filming waiting for his time to perform. However, one afternoon the lead stars, Wayne Tarrant and Dan's girlfriend Sharon Scott, were investigating some ancient ruins on the island. Unwittingly the managed to unleash the demon Nebiros from a centuries old prison. Dan leapt into action, using his technology to battle the demonic sorcery. Dan somehow managed to defeat Nebiros but not after it struck him with a beam of mystical energy. Once Dan had managed to re-imprison Nebiros, he returned to his trailer, only to discover that the energy blast had grafted his suit permanently onto his body.
While many in Dan's situation would see their new found status as a reason to become a super hero or villain, Dan instead was only interested in freeing himself from his Blue Devil costume. Dan pursued this agenda for a long time, coming across various super heroes, none of whom were able to help him in his situation. Eventually Dan decided that he needed to actually make something of himself and use the powers he had been cursed with. Almost as soon as he made this decision he was plagued with attacks from super villains, mystical demons, aliens and robots. During his heroic adventures he picked up a sidekick. Marla Bloom had kept contact with Dan and when her nephew, Gopher, found out about Dan he designed his own suit and became Kid Devil. The two fought side by side and based themselves in Dan's House of Weirdness. This mystical structure was willed to him by his late uncle, Seamus. The house has numerous doors, one of which opens onto a Malibu beach house and the other into a house just outside of Metropolis. The numerous dimensional portals mean that Dan can travel anywhere he needs to although there are more doors than Dan has been able to explore yet.
Dan continued to crave fame and wanted to resurrect his film career. He managed to gain more fame by applying to the Justice League of America. After he was accepted into their ranks, Dan became one of the more powerful members. However he was actually a pawn of the Arcanna who wished to infiltrate and over run the league. After defeating the Arcanna, Dan sold his soul to Neron. However, when he cheated Neron of his reward he paid a dear price. Marla Ward and himself perished. Dan however was reincarnated as a true demon.
Remaining with the League until their demise, Dan stayed away from the hero scene until he answered a call to join the new Justice League Europe. This was actually a trap set by the Mist. Dan was killed by the Mist using holy water. His bones were found in Paris by Faust he kept them in one of his many pouches until he travelled to Hell and met the demon Nebiros. At the right moment, Faust managed to return Dan's soul to the bones and brought him back to life. Dan was still a demon and was loyal to Faust, joining the new Sentinels of Magic. Dan appeared to have died again as a sacrifice in the Sentinels battle against Hermes Trismegestus but has since reappeared on Earth, presumably resurrected again by Faust. Dan appears to be transforming into a true demon, going beyond just having the form of a demon.
Blue Devil has enhanced strength and agility and is a skilled acrobat and martial artist. He also has an immunity to small arms fire, a above human healing factor, night vision, enhanced hearing and the ability to breath underwater. These abilities were originally contained in Dan's suit but have now become his through his transformation towards being a demon. Dan also carries Satan's Trident. This allows him to banish any Earthbound demon back to Hell. He can call or hide this trident at will. The trident also fires energy blasts. Blue Devil also seems to be gaining a measure of immortality with each resurrection. Blue Devil's original trident was a rocket powered device that can propel him through the air. It could also emit flames and electrical discharges. Blue Devil could also program the trident for independent flight using special controls in his suit.
