Profile: A terrorist network created by the Red Skull, the Axis Mundi is an army of assassins. Their plans have often been foiled by the Invaders but Herr Nacht, Frau Ratsel and Baroness Blood have still managed to remain at large.
History: The terrorist organization named the Axis Mundi was founded by the Red Skull, who was posing as the Secretary of Defense at the time. The Axis Mundi is comprised of a series of interconnected cells that kept working on their own after the Red Skull was apprehended by the Avengers. The organization consists mostly of Nazi war criminals and similarly minded people.
The Axis Mundi’s necromancer, Professor Jonas Eckhardt, imprinted the Axis Mundi’s synthetic insectoid army called the Pretorists with the genetic memory of the late Nazi war criminal called Agent Axis. The criminal organization known as Hydra funded the production of over 10,000 Pretorists. From Agent Axis the Axis Mundi gained the stolen Kalahian technology, which allows the Axis Mundi to move through sub-dimensional space.
When posing as the Secretary of Defense, the Red Skull manipulated Thin Man into assembling the new Invaders and building a battleship using Kalahian techonology. The Axis Mundi intended to steal this Battleship Infiltrator. The Red Skull had also planted a sleeper agent, the synthetic Tara, in the Invaders.
The Axis Mundi attempted to eliminate key world leaders and replace them with bioengineered replicas. These replicas were called non-incendiary Adam-series synthetics. The Axis Mundi succeeded in Mazikhandar, where they hoped to control the flow of oil to the West, but their plans were foiled by the Invaders. The Axis Mundi attempted to commandeer the Invaders’ Infiltrator, and the Pretorists were accompanied by Herr Nacht, Frau Ratsel, Meranno and Baroness Blood. The Axis Mundi failed again and Thin Man was able to record the Axis Mundi’s transit signatures, so the Axis Mundi could no longer access sub-dimensional space without alerting the Invaders.
Next the Invaders confronted Baroness Blood in England, where she kidnapped the Invader Spitfire for a brief period. Blood’s minions were killed but she managed to escape.
The Pretorists factories in Mazikhandar were destroyed by the Invaders and Professor Eckhardt was apprehended, even though Hydra’s assassin attempted to eliminate him. The Invaders forced Eckhardt in resurrecting Agent Axis and then learned the Axis Mundi’s plans to fullfill an ancient Atlantean prophecy, “at the end of days, the savage seas shall devour the land”, from Agent Axis. Meranno was about to detonate a thermonuclear warhead capable of melting ice cap in Antartica but he was faced with the Invaders. Meranno forced Tara to follow her programming and initialize an incendiary device within her to fuel the thermonuclear device. Thin Man was able to destroy the warhead but also the Battleship Infiltator was destroyed in the process. Meranno and his Atlantean followers were apprehended by the Invaders and Namor took them to stand trial before the Tribunal Atlantae.
