Kyle Rayner grew up a normal kid in California. He lived with his mother, Maura, as his father had left some years before. He grew up loving comics and art in all its forms, and he did his best to become a professional artist. He met Alexandra DeWitt, a beautiful young photographer, and the two fell deeply in love. It looked like Kyle was going to live a good, normal life.

That is until one night he met a small blue man in an alley. Ganthet, the last of the Guardians of the Universe, had arrived on Earth after the death of his fellow Guardians and the destruction of the Central Power Battery at the hands of Hal Jordan, Earth’s previous Green Lantern, looking to give the last power ring to someone. Kyle was the first person he saw, and so by lucky happenstance, he became the last Green Lantern.

With Alex’s help, Kyle began his superhero career. His first real battle was against the intergalactic conqueror Mongul, who was seeking revenge against Hal Jordan. Superman came to Kyle’s aid, and the two defeated Mongul. In the process, Kyle had drawn the attention of the US government, who wanted his ring for their own uses. The covert organization sent Major Force to obtain the ring, and when he found Alex home, he killed her and stuffed her body into the refrigerator. When Kyle returned home, he found the body of the woman he loved, and Major Force waiting. Kyle beat him savagely until his ring ran out of power. During the conflict he found his lantern and was able to recharge the ring, but chose not to kill Force.

Despondent, Kyle was drawn into the Zero Hour event, where time was slowly unspooling. Joining with the other heroes, Kyle was one of the few left to stand against the mastermind of the plot: Hal Jordan, driven entirely mad, he had absorbed much of the power of the Central Power Battery and had taken the name Parallax. Kyle held Jordan in place while Green Arrow shot him with an arrow, apparently killing them both. Instead they were sent back to the husk of the planet Oa, the former home of the Guardians, and they battled once more. This time Kyle won, and Jordan was apparently destroyed.

Kyle headed towards Earth, and learned one important thing along the way: the Power Ring would work only for him now, making him truly the last Green Lantern. When he arrived home, he found his old place too full of sad memories, and chose to move to New York. Kyle was drawn into an adventure with the Titans, and joined the team. While with them, he met, and began a romance with, Donna Troy, then a Darkstar. Kyle felt a new confidence, moving beyond his pain over Alex’s death and gaining the respect of some of his fellow heroes.

The next of his big trials began as both Ganthet and Parallax returned. Both came looking for the last ring; Ganthet because he thought Kyle unworthy, Jordan because he wanted to be Green Lantern again. Many of the other major heroes of the world were drawn into the battle, and in the end it was Kyle who faced down Jordan, and Ganthet deemed him worthy of the ring. Some of the other heroes were still not ready to accept him, but Kyle was beginning to find his place in the hero community.

Kyle began a more widespread heroic life, heading into space to help save the Darkstars from Darkseid’s bastard son, Grayven. He also became good friends with Connor Hawke, the new Green Arrow, and developed what was initially a grudging working relationship, and then a true friendship with Wally West, the third Flash. Kyle also met John Stewart, former Green Lantern and Darkstar, and after helping save him from Fatality, the alien who hunted former Green Lanterns, they also became friends.

Kyle’s life changed again, some for the better, some for the worst. Donna Troy left him after her ex-husband and son died in an accident, and she was unable to deal with the loss. But Jade, the daughter of Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern who Kyle had earlier encountered, came to be his roommate and the two became an item after a time. But better for him, he received the ultimate honor in the hero community: he was made a member of the JLA.

During one adventure, Kyle was sent back in time and encountered Hal Jordan. When Kyle came back to the present, the young Jordan was thrust along with him, and for a time the two worked together. Eventually Hal went back to when he belonged, but left a spare ring with Kyle, who went into space to try to restart the Green Lantern Corps, using the new ring to make copies. Unfortunately, one of his new Lantern’s turned out to be corrupt, and although Kyle was able to stop him, he decided it was best to not try this at the time.

Kyle returned to Earth and he and Jade began working together as the heroes of New York. They confronted a returned Fatality; Effigy, a being empowered by the Controllers with fire abilities; and even one of the old Manhunter robots. Meanwhile, Kyle worked with the JLA, becoming more a part of the team. He journeyed to the far future, worked with a more diverse group of heroes, and eventually had to overcome all his self-doubts about his place in the League to help destroy Mageddon, the ultimate foe of all life.

Kyle’s life went through another series of major changes shortly thereafter. Kyle and Jade, who had fought and split up, reconciled. He received a new regular art job, doing a strip for Feast Magazine. With the job came a new assistant, Terry Berg, a young homosexual boy who Kyle helped come to terms with his sexuality. And he received a new foe, Nero. Alex Nero was given the yellow energy power, previously wielded by Sinestro and Guy Gardner, by the Weaponers of Qward. Nero, a madman with an amazing imagination, countered Kyle’s ring creations with monsters of his own.

Kyle did find a way to defeat Nero, and then he slowly came to a realization; he had grown far more powerful then any Green Lantern. He had slowly been collecting all the power let free when Hal Jordan died, and he was now a God-like being. He took a new costume and hero identity: Ion. Kyle began doing more work, splitting himself into numerous forms and working universe wide, trying to create a utopia. Kyle needed to come to terms with his new powers, and sought out his long errant father. The two got to know each other, and Kyle decided it was time to be Green Lantern again. He used his power to resurrect Oa and the Guardians, leaving Ganthet to raise the now child Guardians and make them more in touch with the people they would protect.

But for all the ups, Kyle’s life hit a series of downs. On a mission with the JLA, he was sent back in time, fighting an ancient league of heroes, who were being manipulated by a sorceress, to save Aquaman. Kyle was made to serve as spiritual anchor for the team, saving their life with the aid of Manitou Raven, but it was an amazing strain on his mind and body. And then something worse happened. Terry Berg was attacked by a mob of homophobes and was beaten within an inch of his life. Kyle hunted down his attackers, but held himself partially responsible, thinking if he had maintained the power of Ion this wouldn’t have happened. Kyle decided to leave Earth for a time to find his center.

Kyle spent a few months is space, fighting the Crime Syndicate, Black Circle and making peace with his time on Earth. But when he returned, things had changed. He had lost his job at Feast, Jade had left him because he had been ignoring her, and the JLA had found a new Green Lantern in John Stewart. Kyle went to stay with his mother in California, and to visit the graves of the two women he had lost, Alex and Donna Troy, and when he returned home, he found Major Force waiting again. Force had seemingly killed Kyle’s mother, and Kyle went so far as to nearly kill him. Force had not in fact killed her, but had staged it to show Kyle the danger of the life he lived. Kyle chose to not give in, to fight Force and keep his ring. He banished Force’s energy form into the depths of space, and then chose to leave Earth again, partially to protect his mother, and partially to find a place where he could find peace.

Kyle Rayner possesses the Green Lantern ring and the Lantern Power Battery, which is arguably the most powerful weapon in the galaxy. The ring can create anything that the bearer can envision and draws on the bearer's will, and with Kyle’s artist’s imagination and strong will, it has proven amazingly potent. Unlike the ring’s of previous Lantern’s, this one does not have the impurity that makes it unable to affect the color yellow and does not have a 24 hour time limit, simply running out of charge when it has been exhausted. It was previously thought the ring was tied to Kyle’s DNA, making him and his heirs the only ones who will be able to bear that ring unless he so chooses. However, a recent encounter with Deathstroke, where the mercenary assassin tried to overpower the ring hints that the ring could be over run by a greater will power. While he was Ion, Kyle made additional modifications. The ring will always return to Kyle’s hand when he calls for it, and will always maintain a small back-up charge so there will always be enough power left to get Kyle to his lantern to recharge it.
