![]() Every week Comixfan will present you with six picks for the week; comic books and trade paperbacks that Comixfan Staff are anxiously looking forward to. No matter whether it is due to a stellar run by a creative team, an amazing story, the art, the characters or the promise of great character moments... these are example why Comixfan staff are passionate about comic books. Give these recommendations a try! Here are several comic books that look good this week, July 28th, 2010. ![]() Secret Avengers #3 Writer: Ed Brubaker Artist: Mike Deodato Publisher: Marvel Brubaker and Deodato continue their first arc of the special ops Avengers team, and as they're already doing so well with the first two issues, you know this one is going to be just as good. Like Slott's run on Mighty Avengers before it, this title is easily much better then the other Avengers books, which is why I'm looking forward to this each month. Steve Rogers has assembled an unlikely crew of Avengers that have just the right dynamic, and it's got outstanding art from Deodato. This is the pick of the week. ~ William Keogh, Comixfan Columnist ![]() The Tick: The Edlund Epic #3 Writer: Ben Edlund Artist: Ben Edlund Publisher: NEC Its a classic reprint of the original Tick comic #3 "Night of a Million-Zillion Ninjas!", now reprinted in full digital color. The Tick helps young renegade ninja Oedipus protect a powerful artifact known as the Thorn of Oblivion from the rest of the powerful ninja clan. Worse still, as the ninja horde closes in, Oedipus brings the Tick home to meet her father and evil step-mother. Also out this week... The Tick: The Edlund Epic #4... featuring "A Big Fight!" ~ Clay Olsen, Comixfan Resourcist ![]() X-Men Forever 2 #4 Writer: Chris Claremont Artist: Tom Grummett Publisher: Marvel Into the Mouth Of Madness of Mystique! Judging by the cover and the reveal of last issues last page here's hoping we are treated with an Origin Story, with lots of character history. And the previews promise the return of the Morlocks, and maybe a trial and execution for Sabretooth's part in the Mutant Massacre! ~ John H., Comixfan Columnist ![]() Fantastic Four #581 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Neil Edwards Publisher: Marvel Hickman has been employing a clever slow burn approach with this series ever since #570. But there's a head of steam now building up as Marvel's First Family heads towards its possibly biggest ever crisis. War between four kingdoms is brewing. Meanwhile Nathaniel Richards makes a return, jumping back through time to the college years of Reed, Ben and Victor Von Doom, recruiting them for an impossible mission in the future. ~ Alister Hooke, Comixfan Columnist ![]() The Return of Bruce Wayne #4 Writer: Grant Morrison Artist: Cameron Stewart Publisher: DC This book is great fun. But it's Grant Morrison, so it's not your brain-dead kind of fun. So far it has been a blast to witness an amnesiac Bats tumbling helplessly through time as caveman, puritan and pirate. Now he's saddling up and going all Pale Rider. The added bonus is that the very talented Cameron Stewart will be joining Morrison for the Wild West antics. Stewart recently won a much deserved Eisner Award for his amazing online comic Sin Titulo, comicdom's answer to TV's Lost. So this should be pure gold. ~ Alister Hooke, Comixfan Columnist ![]() Detective Comics #867 Writer: David Hine Artist: Scott McDaniel Publisher: DC I've been picking up Detective Comics since Batwoman took over the title (memo to DC: we're still waiting on that Batwoman ongoing you promised). This is the opening of a new arc that's likely to be the last one for Detective before the return of Bruce Wayne to the Bat-books. David Hine and Scott McDaniel are telling the tale of a Gotham in chaos, with Dick Grayson contending with a gang war. And from the solicits later in the arc, it looks like the Joker's got a hand in this one... ~ William Keogh, Comixfan Columnist Agree or disagree with the staff picks? Or feel that the comic book didn't live up to its promise? Tell us! |

I've always loved Deodato's art, and as Brubaker proved before during Gotham Central, he can write a group dynamic, so his run on Uncanny X-men is the exception to the rule of how good a writer he is.

Too true....if fact, I've almost forgotten about how well that Brubaker handled the X-Men, especially during some of their adventures in space; so it shouldn't come to no surprize how well his writing works for the SECRET AVENGERS Series.....
Look likes the list is growing for the SA Series (even though I haven't seen how the current sales goes).....Plus, both FANTASTIC FOUR[#581] & X-MEN FOREVER[#4] are also excellent "Must Reads" for this week's Selections...... |

I didn't really mind Brubaker's X-Men run myself, but it wasn't him at his best either.
At the very least, it was much better then the current status, with a very different team then the Astonishing Scott-Emma-Logan-Pixie combination with the occasional off in the distance appearance of a wallpaper character that the book is dealing with right now. And Fraction's a much better writer then what you'd think reading Uncanny. Just proves my theory that someone is holding his kitten or puppy hostage at gunpoint and forcing him to write Uncanny like that.

Brubaker's Uncanny run was pretty damn good...it's just the mini that came before and the villain jumping from that mini to Uncanny that put a stain on it. He handled the characters pretty good IMO.
