Hmm....costume definetly has a 90's vibe.
Kinda reminds me of Marvels Sersi at that time, with the A-jackets.

Given that it was designed by Jim Lee? Not so surprising, really. What is surprising, however, is that he managed to design a costume for a female character that didn't make her look like a stripper
![]() I kinda like it, personally. It certainly makes more sense than the idea of a heroine based in Greek mythology plastering American iconography and colours all over her costume, and would definitely translate onto any big-screen adaptation far more easily than her classic outfit. Yes, Lynda Carter wore a live-action version of it well, but just like Adam West in his gut-busting spandex, it looks a bit cheesy now. So it's similar to 90s Superboy? As long as Diana doesn't copy his original hairstyle, it's all good

Well, it's always been established that it's because they made the costume for her based on American iconography -- whether originally because she was being sent to help the US in WWII, or later that it was based on Diana Trevor's WWII uniform.

Remarks from Lee about the new costume from SDCC:
As for the highly publicized new costume for Wonder woman, Jim Lee said, "I was thinking that we wanted something completely different" before adding that "We really wanted something that would make everyone go ape crap. And there's a reason in the story for the costume change, and as it goes along it'll evolve." He also said that he was sure that in a few years time, he'd meet a fan who would say that "Wonder Woman" #600 was their first and favorite comic as he's seen happen several times in the past with books he'd never expected. A fan then said she loved the costume in general but hated the jacket, to which Lee replied, "It's attached to her back and sewn into her flesh. It's a magical jacket!" He then said he'd take the note into their next editorial meeting. "Once the jacket comes off, it'll be a big story point, and we're hoping for similar press coverage," joked Didio. Wow, Mr. Lee. Ape Crap. That's really thoughtful of you.

I'm with those more concerned with the timeline thing than the costume. I hate it when origins are revised and if that's what they're doing, I highly doubt I'm going to like it.
The costume, meh. I agree that she should look more Greek, less American. But I also agree that her costume was in need of updating. This won't stick, and hopefully it evolves into something better without reverting completely to what it was. The other thing I'm not sure about is WW being in her early 20's, (and a street kid?). To me, WW has always been in her late 20's or 30's. She's not a kid in any estimation, she is a grown woman. With Supergirl, Powergirl, Batgirl, etc. there doesn't need to be another young woman hero. To put it simply, WW should fit among the cast of Friends more than the cast of Gossip Girl. So, I guess what I'm getting at is that I want WW to be a grown woman, who is dignified and sure of herself, and who isn't an emblem of America. (That's Superman's job, after all). The costume can change, but the character shouldn't be constantly revised. Both Rucka and Simone did a good job of portraying a Wonder Woman who was, more or less, consistently all of the things I said above.

I always thought Wonder Woman ought to have pants. Yes, she's got nice legs, granted, but pants would look good on her.

Not to mention being more practical. But I would like to see some classical Greek elements incorporated into the outfit. (But didn't the real-life Amazons come from the region near the Black Sea?)

I think that the costume change was needed for sure. This new outfit is not exactly what I might have done, but looking at it the only real change I would suggest is that it should have red motorcycle boots, (sans the white stripe) which would make those gold stirrups on her leggings look a little more natural. That's a minor quibble though, overall I think it is cool. It reminds me of the 90's 'biker' outfit, (which I liked) but way less exploitative, and more colorful without going overboard. Also, if anyone caught Wonder Woman #602, she sheds her jacket and reveals a rather unexpected golden body harness beneath that weaves over her arms. I found the gold harness to give the character a touch of that 'Clash of the Titans/Xena' sort of look Wondy should have while the jacket modernizes things nicely. I agree with the posters who point out that this look will also translate better into a motion picture.
I think something we should all remember though is that this current storyline explicitly provides Diana a challenge from the gods to re-establish the 'Wonderverse' back to it's original continuity. And we all know that Diana generally succeeds in what she aims to do when given divine challenges. I think what will most likely happen is that Diana will eventually succeed in this goal and reestablish her 'classic' history that we are all used to, but will gain a fresh perspective from her memories of this current tangent timeline being raised in the modern world, resulting in a synthesis of the two, meaning Diana will be able to have her classic origin but that her dialogue needn't sound like someone from 'The Ten Commandments' movie anymore. And visually, I think they would take the opportunity to merge her new and classic looks at that point in time as well. So all the old wondy fans from the Lynda Carter days (that statement includes me) need to calm down and enjoy the ride. If you read the issues it's actually one of the better Wondy stories in a while so far. Diana is going to rediscover all her powers and restore the timeline, and I for one feel that with her issue 600 it was time to give her a fresh reboot after the production debacle that was "Who is Wonder Woman?", her last relaunch. I think this story is far more successfully answering that question, albeit in a roundabout deconstructionist way. Also, when the news of this redesign hit over the July 4th weekend, I saw national network, cable, and even my local news stations covering the story, not to mention the New York Times. When was the last time Wonder Woman made the news? Love or hate the change, but that was a really savvy move on DC's part.
