Post FEATHER #1 REVIEW

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/featherpromo1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/featherpromo1t.jpg" align=left alt="Feather #1"></a>Reviewer: Anthony Lucynski, gweedos@yahoo.com
Quick Rating: Great!

Steve Uy returns and brings with him a whole new world!

Words: Steve Uy
Pictures: Also Steve Uy
Inks: Again, Steve Uy
Colors: Wait for it...Steve Uy!
Promotional Manager: Jon Roscetti

The first thing any comic book collector and/or casual reader will notice about Feather is the serious lack of noses on the faces of the main characters involved. Don't worry though, Steve Uy did that on purpose. All will be revealed later on in the series, but for now, you're introduced to the wonderful world of Rakkon, faceless inhabitants and all! Or rather, you're introduced to a fraction of Rakkon. Sehven and Leeka are best friends in this serene land. Sehven and his relic collection, Leeka and her..um..wings. See, Sehven is a boy with big dreams of adventure and dragon slaying! Leeka claims to be a dragon (and has the wings on her back to prove it!). You'd think a wannabe dragon slayer being friends with a self proclaimed dragon would be a tense situation. But it's not, really. While Sehven practices a life of reckless abandon, with no real fear or caution for his or anybody else's safety, Leeka is the cool, calm and collected half of the duo. They watch out for each other (or at least Leeka watches out for Sehven), and on the sidelines is Sehv's big brother Clip, who watches both of them, and warns Sehven that Leeka may not be what she claims.

Thus is the plot we are introduced to in this first issue of Feather. Steve Uy returns, this time at Image, with a book all his own. He literally does it all: Writer, Artist, Color, Letters. And he does it with style! Gorgeous backgrounds mix with wonderful colors and likeable characters to open what promises to be a very real fantasy epic. Fans thirsting for a well drawn fantasy series can finally relax a little now that Uy is on the map. While other series have tried and failed along the way to capture the mood and dynamics involved with making a pure fantasy graphic effort, Steve Uy hits it out of the ball park on is first try, making me (and most likely anybody who has read this) highly anticipate the rest of what Feather has to offer! Not unlike the opening to any number of classic Final Fantasy video games, Uy establishes the world and culture and catalyst to the sequence of events seemingly effortlessly. As the pages turn, I'm reminded of the same feeling of adventure and excitement that I had playing those games. But I'm watching someone else play, and he's got me hooked already.

If the beauty and style of the book wasn't enough, there is a nice dash of humor interwoven into the fabric of the story. From the little conversations back and forth between the three main characters thus far, to the interaction of Sehven and Glee, the Relic Seller, that makes you chuckle. Add a dash of drama when Leeka makes a visit back to her family nest, and you have all the workings of what a great fantasy epic SHOULD be.

While I stop short of thinking this was the best single thing to ever hit the stands, I do believe Steve Uy is on to something here. In and industry that is always crying foul at the lack of all ages books, this addition to the offerings out there shows that not only can an all ages book be fun, but NOT dumbed down in the process. We need more, fun books like this, with hints of deeper meanings involved. We need adventure, we need excitement, and we need wonder. Presented here in the first of a limited engagement, we find all of those, and the promise of more. Pick it up today!

I picked up and totally thought it was great. I love how it looks and flows, and I like how things just are what they are. Fantasy is ususally lost by writers trying to explain something that doesn't seem natural to you and me, which isn't what fantasy is all about.

I wish this was an ongoing as I don't have it my budget to be picking up a lot of limited series but oh well. I loved Eden's Trail and I have to admit, the whole reason I picked up the book is because the character on the cover looked like the chick in Eden's Trail. But I have certainly became a fan of Uy.
