Growing up in Holyoke, Tennessee, Amy Stringer was a victim in a school shooting. She survived, but lost her eyesight and was unable to walk at first.

Due to her disabilities, Amy went into a bout of depression, and her telepathy once caused a hundred people to go temporarily blind. She met Professor Xavier, who is also a telepath and was confined to a wheelchair. He showed Amy the time he lost the use of his legs, and then helped her learn to walk again.

Amy later attended the trial of Casey Fullerton-Smith, who had shot her a month ago. When questioned about her injuries, Amy lost control of her anger and used her powers to make everyone in the courtroom blind. She was then about to kill Fullerton-Smith, but was convinced not to do so by Professor X.
