Real Name: UnrevealedKnown Aliases: Irene Adler First Appearance: X-Men (1st series) #141 Place of Birth: Salzburg, Austria Known Relatives: Justine Chase (daughter, deceased), Cole Chase (son-in-law, deceased), Tyler Trevor Chase (grandson) Died in: Uncanny X-Men #255 Place of Death: Muir Island, Scotland Cause of Death: Killed by Legion Group Affiliation: Freedom Force, formerly Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants II Known Allies: Mystique, Rogue Major Enemies: Legion, Shadow King, Reavers, X-Men, Senator Robert Kelly, Avengers Height: 5'7" Weight: 110 lbs Eyes: No visible pupils Hair: Silver Other distinguishing features: Destiny was blind Almost nothing has been revealed about the past of the woman named Destiny. It is not even known how old she was at the time of her death, for whereas she appeared to be a woman in her sixties, it has been speculated that she was far older, and that her mutation had extended her lifespan. Neither are the circumstances known under which she first met her longtime companion, the shape-shifting mutant terrorist known as Mystique. In 1936 Destiny, Mystique and Wolverine worked together agains Nazis in Britain. It is known that at one point Destiny and Mystique travelled with a carnival, in which Destiny was employed as a fortune teller. Destiny also lived with Mystique when the latter was raising her unofficial foster daughter, the power- and memory-absorbing young mutant known only as Rogue. The general public first became aware of Destiny when she and the other members of Mystique's team of super-powered agents known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attempted to assassinate United States Senator Robert Kelly during his hearings on the alleged menace that mutants posed to humanity. The attempt failed thanks to the intervention of the mutant team of costumed adventurers known as the X-Men. Mystique soon became aware of the United States government's increasing anti-mutant activity, and, tired of being hunted as outlaws, offered the services of herself and the Brotherhood to the United States government in exchange for a pardon for their crimes. Thus the Brotherhood was renamed Freedom Force, and Destiny and Freedom Force's other members became superhuman operatives of the United States government. On their first official mission, they were dispatched to capture the self-styled master of magnetism, the mutant named Magneto. As a member of Freedom Force, Destiny was involved in missions that continued to bring him into conflict with super-heroes, most notably the X-Men, X-Factor, and the Avengers. Destiny was slain during a battle between Freedom Force and the Reavers, a team of criminal cyborgs, on Muir Island off the coast of Scotland. Destiny was left in the care of the mutant technosmith Forge by Mystique, but Destiny ordered Forge to assist Freedom Force in repelling the Reavers, leaving her alone. Then, as Destiny had foreseen in a vision, the telepathic mutant Legion, who was under the control of the powerful psychic known as the Shadow King, killed her. Destiny's body was later cremated, and Mystique scattered her ashes out at sea. However, subsequently, Legion had visions of Destiny, apparently enticing the schizophrenic mutant to attempt to kill Magneto, an act that precipitated the birth of an alternate reality after Legion travelled into the past and accidentally slew his own father, the telepathic founder of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier, instead of Magneto. It is still a mystery whether Legion only imagined seeing and hearing Destiny, whether her ghost appeared to him, or whether she has somehow managed to return to life. The X-Man known as Shadowcat later discovered Destiny's journal, which contained pages of cryptic prophecies about the end of the millenium and the gathering of a group known as "The Twelve". The journal also hinted at the rise of the eternal mutant named Apocalypse, and death for many of the mutants and the world in general. So far, some of Destiny's writings have been proven correct, but the rest are still shrouded in mystery. The weather-manipulating X-Man named Storm currently leads a team of X-Men who are scouring the world for the many volumes of Destiny's "Books of Truth" to prevent them and the revelations they contain from falling into the wrong hands. Destiny was a mutant who possessed the psionic power of precognition, able to perceive in her mind's eye the events of possible futures. Although she was blind, Destiny could mentally scan the probability spectrum of alternate futures and mentally perceive sounds and sights of events that distinguish them. By concentrating, she could focus on only the most probable alternate futures. The accuracy of Destiny's ability to foresee future events decreased in direct proportion to the distance those future events lie ahead in time. The greater the time factor, the greater the number of alternate futures to scan. She could comfortably scan the alternate futures that exist from one second away up until those that exist fifteen minutes away. Hence, she could be 97% accurate in her predictions of the future ten seconds away or less. Despite the limited extent of her certainty, her long-range scanning could be of great use in the early detection of possible random factors that could disrupt her or her partners' plans. The more likely that a particular alternate future would manifest itself in her reality, the clearer and more distinct her mental impression of it would be. Less likely alternate futures would appear hazy and indistinct. If she left her precognitive perceptions fully open, she would "see" an overlapping succession of images drift in and out of focus as probabilities shifted and further elements transpired. By active participation in the events around her, she could help shift the probabilities toward desired ends. Her personal phenomenal field, that area with which she could physically interact, limited destiny's field of precognitive perceptions. Hence, she could not scan the future for events that might take place on the other side of the world or even a mile away. Does the flashbacks in X-Treme X-Men # 1 count as an appearance? Anyway, those flashbacks gave information about her past.

We did see her eyes a few times, actually. Sometimes she had pupils, sometimes she didn't. It varied.
Anyhoo, if you're going to count FF v.3 #16 (in which she appeared as a ghost of some kind), that opens up a big can of worms. What about the issues in which she talked in Legion's head? X-Factor 109 immediately comes to mind, and there's another issue of the (adjectiveless) X-Men series, the issue number of which eludes me at this time. And Jannepie is correct; if you count flashback scenes such as Avengers West Coast 84, then you probably ought to count flashbacks like X-Treme X-Men 1. Destiny's chronology is one headache I've stayed well away from.....

She's a member of the Defenders (IV), as seen in FANTASTIC FOUR (vol. 3) #16.

Pretty old. From the flashbacks in X-Treme, she has been around since the turn of the 20th century...
