Story Title: Dead Ahead

“The smaller the head, the badder the ass.”

Written by: Andrew Dabb
Art by: Boussourir

How easily are you offended? What type of sense of humour do you have?

Those are the questions that will define your interest in this book. Or maybe: How does this sound to you? A crass, amoral (Maybe immoral?), penniless mercenary with a short fuse has kidnapped the wife of a rich CEO for ransom. But she doesn't even have enough money to wait for the ransom money, so she is hired to deal with a cult of people who cut off their heads in search of enlightenment. And, along the way, we get horny robots, a grocery store that resembles Transmetropolitan at its most absurd, cannibals and anything else that combines profuse swearing, violence and absurd sci-fi.

Vaistron may not be overly original --- it seems to fit the mold of over-the-top maturely immature comedy -- but dang it, it works. There isn't much to say about the writing beyond... it made me laugh. Multiple times. And I have this theory, a theory which is mine: that laughter is directly related to happiness.

The art is a weird angular style with odd use of perspective that makes it appear simultaneously two-dimensional and three-dimensional. The characters all appear to be completely insane -- scratch that -- the entire visual style appears to be completely insane! And since the entire book is just psychotic weirdness... it makes for a perfect fit. The art makes sense of the complete lack of sense... if that makes any sense?

Vaistron is the place where everything happens in the book.

Here's a review of Vaistron #1, if you need any further background info.
