Default X-Men Timeline / Chronology PRE-Reload

My timeline;
Please let me know if something is wrong, or if you can fill in some spots with comics I don't have.
Help is very appreciated, but please also say WHY you think something should be different.
I don't like breaking arcs or single issues up, as that is very annoying to read IMO. I have tried to keep that to a minimum, but sometimes it just can't be helped.

Hey Marty,
I've started with my own little chronology project and when I looked through your timeline-list, I'm a little puzzled by the place of Marvel Team-Up Annual #6 (Spider-Man, New Mutants and Cloak & Dagger). You have put it after NM 12 (Feb.1984), the site Marvel Chronology project has put it after NM 4 (June 1983). The issue has come out in 1983.
I myself am thinking it should come after or right before New Mutants (1983) #4. Other reviews also state that Karma should have been at the line-up, but is missing for no particular reason.

Let me know what you think.

I have put that Annual after #12, because Prof X mentions what happened in the Annual in New Mutants #13.

IMHO, it would be weird for Xavier to not mention it at all for so long.

And yes, the absence of Karma is indeed another reason, but that is not my main reason.

I understand your reasons, however after some thorough research it is nearly impossible to place it between #12 and #13, solely for these reasons.

Clue 1: In the actual Marvel Team-Up Annual #6; Roberto states that the reason he wants to stay in the city (and not go home after the Cats-musical) is that "they haven't been away from Prof. Xavier in over a month". In issue 7-12 they leave for Rio de Janeiro and right after that to Nova Roma in the Amazon. They just return to the Mansion in issue 13.

Clue 2: In New Mutants #15 Roberto and Rahne are missing at a bus terminal. The others find them on the observation deck, where they stare at the Holy Ghost Church, the hide-out of Cloak and Dagger. Dani says to Sam: "Remember who we met there last summer". In issues 13/14 it is winter, because it's even snowing.

Clue 3: At the end of #12 the NM are still in Brazil and on the first page of #13 they introduce Magma to Professor Xavier. Quite odd that four of them are going to a musical, leaving the newbie all alone at the mansion without introducing her to somebody else.

Clue 4: It seems that this Annual came out right after New Mutants #4 (June 1983).

Clue 5: The whole thing with the Professor thinking about them injected by the Cloak and Dagger-drug in NM #13 and the trance-situation in NM #15 is very Claremontian for the story build-up in NM 22-25.

Still you are right in saying it is peculiar the Professor did not mention this before. Had probably to do with the fact that Marvel did not want to disturb the flow of the New Mutant-series by bringing out a Spider-Man Annual with major repercussions for the characters.

When I was reading the series at first (in Dutch) I remembered that the whole Cloak and Dagger thing got me confused big time, because I never read about it. But that aside.

For the reasons above I definitely think it should be placed after issue 4.

'Reload' was the name that was stuck to the event of yet another revamp of the X-line.

You missed a couple of X-Men appearences: one with Spider-Man and Morbius in Marvel Team-Up (#4, I think?) and a multi issue story in Captain America 170-175 (not sure of issue numbers). Also Rom #'s 17,18,65 and 66, and Rom Annual #3.

I missed nothing.
Please keep in mind that the list above is what I myself own.
I may have a lot, but I do not have everything X!

If you know where those issues belong, let me know and I'll put them in the Timeline.

I may have those, I'll take a look when I've got some time.

Update... Dates and Issue confirmed:
  • Marvel Team-Up #4 (September 1972)
  • Captain America #172 (April 1974),
  • Captain America #173 (May 1974),
  • Captain America #174 (June 1974),
  • Captain America #175 (July 1974)
  • Rom #17 (April 1981),
  • Rom #18 (May 1981),
  • Rom #65 (April 1985),
  • Rom #66 (May 1985),
  • Rom Annual #3 (1984)

This will provide an estimated placement, but I'll see if I have the issues.

Hi Marty,

Hope you are well? I'm coming along nicely with my timeline reading but I am stuck yet again. Could you please point me in the direction of these two comics as I am struggling to find them:

Marvel Milestones: Amazing Adventures featuring the Beast
Cable # -1

I'm loving the 60's originals but I cannot get hold of a copy of Marvel Masterworks Vol 4 any where and it looks like Im going to have to read that one digitally. Ive also just ordered the complete set of x-men the hidden years. So I have loads of reading ahead but if you could help me with these two I would be grateful.

Just want to say that this timeline is the best

Any suggestions/help is welcome.
I think the first X-Men & Alpha Flight limited series must have occurred during the time-span covered by Uncanny X-Men #192, in the interval after the battle with the Magus but before Xavier's Christmas-season beating at the hands of his Columbia University students. He showed no signs of recent injuries during the mini.

My reasoning: Just before the X-Men leave for Asgard to rescue Storm and the New Mutants in Uncanny Annual #9 (IIRC), Wolverine says they'd defeated Loki "last winter." I think Logan would identify seasons by the weather, not the calendar; for him, "last winter" could have included the period from early November to mid-December.

Thanks Madelyne, I'll double-check that!

Hey, Marty P.

First of all, I'd like to congratulate you on your work. Still it has one big weakness: it's difficult to follow because I have to keep going back and see what happened in those titles. Moreover it doesn't help to identify stories that are more or less simultaneous.

Any chance of upgrading the list with some notations? It would also help me see the difference between why you chose some alignments and how they differ from mine (I'm mostly limited to online summaries because my stock of comics is focused on older issues, namely from the 90s).

For instance, why do you place the Weapon X issues where you do? I have those, but not the contemporary X-issues. I've gone through the summaries but it's a hell of a headache (much worse than trying to figure it out directly from the comics).

Another situation is the start of X-treme. I had placed the team's departure between UXM 390 and 391, because in 391 Scott's bonding with his father before returning to a depaupered team, just before Eve of Destruction. You, though, place it after that arch. Why?

Well, the list is for those who have the issues between that period;
That said, I do agree it could be clearer here and there, perhaps adding arc-titles here and there...although especially the older issues don't use that...that is more of a new trend to have them all in a storyarc.

I'd want to, but it would make the list so much more BIGGER...it would become unreadable; this is a simple list of the order to read them in the way I feel they fit best.

Í think it's as good as impossible to make a read-order out of summaries....
Which issues are you referring to exactly?

I remember having a hard time fitting them in. They really follow each other up real nicely, it's almost impossible to break them up....

Sarai
I'd have to check.

I would love to re-read everything after the Muir island Saga, but i simply do not have the time yet to do it.......

Thanks for the comments, I'll see what I can do about the problems you raised. Maybe with the new update the site has had, it might be possible to do something about adding notes without making the list triple in size...

Actually, some summaries are helpful... especially those that have notes explaining previous appearances and so on.

The only solution would be to have a summarised list with no notations except the story arcs' titles, which is basically what you've already done, for those who just want to know the order; and a second one broken up in sections with notations, for those who like to be nitpicky or just want more details.

I've found a great thread by Chris Day for after Reload until M-day and Decimation, which is great because I've never read any Avengers and what not and those issues were really important to make the whole M-day understandable.

Anyway, for what I want, I really just need to get the period in between the Revolution (the 6 month gap after the High Evolutionary) and the Reload. I'm working on the organisation of my chronology at the moment, and maybe I'll upload it next week or so, if you'd like to take a look and discuss my interpretations.

Do you think it'll be OK to do that in this thread or should I start a new one, since I'm not really going to focus on the entire Pre-Reload chronology?

Sarai
Make a new thread if you like, or post it in the one by Chris Day but please not here.
Chris D never continued his project so feel free to use his thread to post your interpretation, and I'll be happy to look it over.

Thanks for the input. Chris was all about Post-Reload, though, so a new thread it is.

Thank you for your help.

Marty P, this is a great list. Any idea where we could place Claremont's "X-Men vs. Hulk" #1 (March 2009)???

Mr C has responded here on CXF that the story takes place somewhere around Uncanny #171, but I still have to look into where it fits the best exactly.

@Sarai, Madelyne and others;
I have not forgotten your replies, and I will get back to you soonish (I hope).

@Madelyne; unless I misunderstand you, isn't the Alpha Flight/X-Men mini already where you say it should be?

Umm...yes it is. I just didn't realize it until after I'd posted. GMTA, I guess.
