![]() Every week Comixfan will present you with six picks for the week; comic books and trade paperbacks that Comixfan Staff are anxiously looking forward to. No matter whether it is due to a stellar run by a creative team, an amazing story, the art, the characters or the promise of great character moments... these are example why Comixfan staff are passionate about comic books. Give these recommendations a try! Here are several comic books that look good this week, November 4th, 2009. ![]() The stellar team of Pak and Van Lente unleash the next arc of the Hercules series in this one shot. Hercules, Amadeus, two teams of Avengers, the Agents of Atlas, and Ares all feature in this event, and Olympus itself will never be the same. Step-Mommy Dearest Hera has been a really bad girl as of late, and Hercules has a few things to sort out with her. Pak and Van Lente are responsible for one of the best series out there today, and backstopped by artist Rodney Buchemi, they're going to give us even more in the next few months. -William Keogh, Comixfan Moderator It will be a battle of the Gods, modern versus classis Greek, as the Olympus Group proceeds to unleash a new horror into the Marvel Universe. With the combined backing of the fantastic runs of Incredible Hercules, Agents of Atlas, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers and more this forty-eight pages promise to overflow with quality leading into the latest Marvel event. -Michael Regan, Comixfan Editor-in-Chief Assault on New Olympus Writer: Greg Pak, Fred Van Lente Penciler: Rodney Buchemi Publisher: Marvel ![]() Last issue, we ended on an extraordinary splash page, with the face of Elasti Girl utterly contorted with rage. She was so out of her mind with anger she could neither hear nor respond to Robot Man. I have never seen a better depiction of unbridled anger in my life. And the reason? Niles Caulder, leader of Doom Patrol, had just betrayed her in the most despicable way possible. Imagine Professor X if he was heartless and conniving. That's what we're dealing with here. Except, if you're sensible, then you don't mess with a woman who can grow to the size of a building and snap your spine like a chicken bone. All of this is to say that I am straining at the leash to see the outcome of this betrayal when she gets back to Oolong Island. Be afraid. Be very afraid. -Alister Hooke, Comixfan Columnist Doom Patrol #4 Writer: Keith Giffen Artist: Matthew Clark Publisher: DC ![]() Betsy Braddock's had something of a chaotic life. She's an English lass, mutant, X-Man, and Exile. She's been transplanted into another body, gutted by one Sabretooth, and romanced by another. Now that she's back in her own world, after a brief stop in her former (and dead) body, she's got some adjusting to do. Christopher Yost (X-Force) starts off this new limited series featuring Psylocke as she sets out to put the past behind her and forge ahead. So pick up the first issue, because Betsy's getting the chance to do more here then hold up wallpaper and look like she's constantly having a happy moment. Now if they could only do something about that costume... -William Keogh, Comixfan Moderator Psylocke #1 Writer: Christopher Yost Art: Harvey Tolibao & Paul Neary Publisher: Marvel ![]() Mike Carey is not a flash writer given to mindless excess or cheap shock tactics. Instead he loves to tell a great story. He also displays a deep knowledge of the characters he writes, suggesting that he exercises care and does his homework. Definitely one of the most intelligent creators out there. So far his Torch story has been awesome. It may be flying under the radar in comparison, but this is easily as good as the Marvels Project, so that should tell you something about the quality of this book. The Mad Thinker's plan to use the resurrected original Torch as a WMD unfolded last issue, and we witnessed some seriously gorgeous fireworks thanks to the dynamic artwork of Patrick Berkenkotter. Although the Thinker is ostensibly working for A.I.M., he clearly has his own evil agenda. Can't wait to see what he has in mind. -Alister Hooke, Comixfan Columnist Torch #3 (of 8) Writer: Mike Carey Artist: Patrick Berkencotter Publisher: Marvel ![]() In this and the previous issue, Mike Grell's fantastic art graces the pages of Warlord again at last! It has been too long... great eye-candy is combined with excellent writing in this two-part story. The man does truly beautiful work. -David Branson, Comixfan Columnist Warlord #8 Writer/Artist: Mike Grell Publisher: DC ![]() In the 1602 books, she was called the most dangerous woman in Europe. In the 616 universe, the title still applies. With her upcoming appearance in next years' Iron Man 2, the Black Widow gets back into a new limited series by writer Paul Cornell (Captain Britain & MI-13) and artist Tom Raney (Dark Reign: Hawkeye). With old skeletons in her closet coming back to haunt her, the Widow is in a race against time. She's been one of my favorite characters for a long time, and with creative talent as good as Cornell and Raney, this miniseries promises to be explosive. Now if only someone could explain to Greg Land to pay attention to basic anatomy while doing covers....-William Keogh, Comixfan Moderator Black Widow: Deadly Origin#1 Writer: Paul Cornell Artist: Tom Raney Publisher: Marvel |
