In slavic languages usually an -a is added to female surnames: e.g. the black widow is Natash Romanova - not the anglicized "Romanov"

It's also how middle names get chosen sometimes, too. For istance, Nicolai Rasputin has three children: Piotr Nicolaivitch, Mikhail Nicolaivitch, and Illyana Nicolaivna.
